The Parish of Templepatrick

The parish of Templepatrick is bounded to the north by the parish of Grange of Nilteen and east by the parish of Ballylinney and Carnmoney, on the west by the parish of Killead and to the south the parish of Shankill. St. Patrick Church of Ireland in Templepatrick was originally dedicated to St. John and it would appear in the Middle Ages, it was associated with the Knights of St. John. It was re-named in 1886 by Bishop Reeves and it became St. Patricks. The earliest baptisms and marriages date from 1827 with burials beginning the following year. There vestry minutes from 1826 to 1874, and publication of Banns 1827 to 1866 under MIC1/82 at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) in Belfast. I have not examined these records.

The history of the Presbyterian Church of Templepatrick dates from about 1625, when its first minister Mr. Josias Welch was ordained minister of the congregation by Bishop Knox of Raphoe. Prior to 1830, when a branch of the Church split away to form the Templepatrick Non-Subscribing Presbyterian, the records of the congregation relate to the Old Presbyterian Church and for the General Synod of Ulster back to 1646. The Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church holds baptisms dating from 1796, marriages from 1797 and lists of communicants for 1811-47. The Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast also holds transcripts of selected baptisms (1758-1853) and marriages (1797-1829) believed to have been extracted from the original records by William Fee McKinney. Templepatrick Presbyterian Church holds baptism and marriage from 1831 and preserves a Church census for 1831 and 1857.
