Ancestry of the Maxwells of Farnham

County Cavan, Ireland

Robert Maxwell, second son of John Maxwell of Calderwood in Lanarkshire, by his first wife Elizabeth Hamilton. The eldest son was called James Maxwell. Robert came to Ireland at the latter end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I under the direction of King James VI of Scotland. He was appointed Dean of Armagh and came to possess a number of properties. He married Isabella Seaton and by her had a daughter, Phebe, and three sons, Robert, Henry and James:

a) Robert Maxwell, eldest son of the Dean, obtained his doctorate in Divinity (D.D.) at the Trinity College of Dublin. He said to have built his house of College Hall in County Armagh in 1626, and before the Irish Rebellion of 1641, he was rector of Tynan in the diocese of Armagh and archdeacon of Down. After the Rebellion, he moved to England, briefly returning to Dublin, when he was consecrated bishop of Kilmore in Cathedral of St. Patricks in Dublin on 24 March 1643. He is said to have returned to England, where lived until the restoration in 1660. In that year, he returned to Ireland with his family and took possession of his estates. The following year, he was appointed bishop of Ardagh, which he held jointly with Kilmore. He died in 1672.

Robert married Margaret, daughter of Robert Echlin, bishop of Down (1612-35), and sister to Jane, wife of his brother, Henry Maxwell of Finnebrogue, and by her had four sons:

  1. John Maxwell of Farnham in the parish of Urney, County Cavan, eldest son of Robert. He built a house at Farnham, where he resided until it was burned in 1688. He died in 1713. He died without an heir and by his will, he settled his estates on his brothers sons. He was succeeded by his cousin, Rev. Henry Maxwell of Fellows Hall.

  2. James Maxwell of Fellows Hall (or Crerum) in the parish of Tynan, County Armagh, second son of Robert. He married Jane, daughter of his uncle Henry Maxwell of Finnebrogue. His only son the Rev. Robert Maxwell succeeded to Farnham after the death of his uncle John Maxwell c.1713 and to Fellows Hall after the death of his father James, who died in 1714. After his death c. 1737, when died without issue, he was succeeded by his cousin, John Maxwell, son of Henry Maxwell of College Hall.

  3. Henry Maxwell of College Hall (or Marrassit) in the parish of Tynan, County Armagh, third son of Robert. He inherited College Hall and was prebendary of Tynan and rector of Derrynoose in the diocese of Armagh. He married Anne Stewart and by her had a daughter Jane, who married Henry of Finnebrogue in Count Down. They had two sons, John, who succeeded his cousin and became first Baron of Farnham. The second son, Robert, a captain of horse and lived at Fellows Hall.

  4. William Maxwell of Falkland in County Monaghan, fourth son of Robert. He married Anne daughter of George Walker, chancellor of the Cathedral church of Armagh, and had issue.

b) Henry Maxwell of Finnebrogue in the parish of Inch in County Down, second son of the Dean. He acquired the estate of Finnebrogue in County Down and married Jane daughter of Robert Echlin, who was bishop of Down and Connor. They had an only son called Robert, who married Jane daughter of the Rev. Chichester of Belfast, and by this marriage, there were three sons, Henry who succeeded as heir, and Robert and John, who died without issue and several daughters.

c) James Maxwell of Mullatinny now Elm Park in the parish of Eglish, County Armagh, third son of the Dean. He married Jane Norris daughter of Mr. Norris and with her was murdered in the house of his brother at College Hall in 1641, leaving two sons, Henry, heir to Mullatinny, and James of Old Castle in County Meath.
