Catholic Convert and Qualification Rolls
The Catholic Convert Rolls and Qualifications Rolls, dating respectively from 1703 and 1774 are an important eighteenth-century genealogical collection. After the enactment of the Penal Laws, which restricted Catholics from owning property, voting and holding public officers, they were gradually relaxed for those individuals who took the Oath of Allegiance to the King and became members of the established Church of Ireland. In the majority of cases the act of renouncing was a token gesture to secure by legal means a basic right to property, education, marriage, social status etc. They contain the names of over 50, 000 individuals who took the Oath of Allegiance with the majority taking place after the Act of 1774 was passed to permit the Kings subjects, of any religion, to take an oath at the local assizes (courts). These names were then registered in the Catholic Qualification Rolls according to surname, first name, address, and date of qualification. Occupation is sometimes also supplied. In the Catholic Convert Rolls, the name, address, date of enrolment followed by the dated certified.
