The Muster Rolls of c.1630

The Muster Rolls of c.1630 contain lists of the principal landlords in Ulster and the names of their Protestant men whom they could assemble in an emergency and the types of arms borne by them. They are arranged by county, and district within the county, and list the names of over 12, 000 tenants. I have examined the original manuscript preserved at the British Library Manuscript Collections in London and transcript copies held at the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast. Of the nine counties of Ulster, only Antrim, Donegal, Down and Tyrone list the names Ms above the age 16 years, able to bear arms. I have included the page folio from the original manuscript catalogued under Add 4770. Millies Collection, Vol. XVII (ff. 283) Muster Roll of the province of Ulster c1630-36. I could find no reference to the surname Amuligane on any of the estates covered, and note that there are no muster rolls for the estate of Sir John Chichester of Belfast or the Earl of Antrim.

Calliver = s sort of handgun or musket.
Snaphance = a Dutch firelock.

Notes
[1] William Adair settled in the barony of Toome from Kinlilt in Wigtownshire, Scotland.
[2] John Murray, Earl of Annandale, acquired a number of proprieties in the baronies of Boylagh and Banagh belonging to Scottish Planters, such as, William Stewart of Garlies, Sir Patrick Vaus of Barnbarroch, Sir Patrick McKee of Larg and George Murray of Broughton. In the barony of Banagh, the Earl owned the whole of the parish of Killybegs and the townlands of Aighan, Ballybedonnell, Ballyloughan, Croagh, Darney, Druminiscal and Rahan in the parish of Killaghtee. The 1665 Hearth Money Rolls of County Donegal lists the names of Robert Shanklan and Widow Milikin, who immediately follows Shanklan, in the parish Killaghtee. It will be noted, George Molligan is listed with David Jackson, younger. The Hearth Money Roll for the parish of Killybegs lists the names of David Jackson of Largysillagh and David Jackson of Drumanoo.
[3] Sir James Erskine, a Scots man, acquired the 3000 acres of land, Portclare & Ballykirgir from Sir Thomas Ridgeway, and Ballyymackell from George Ridgeway.
[4] Capt. Sanderson, a Scots man, purchased the land of Tullelegan in the parish of Desercreat from George Crawford of Lefnoreis in Ayrshire and subsequently introduced 36 British men.
