The Tithe Applotment Books of Ireland
1823-1838
Tithe was a tax levied on all agricultural land (originally a tenth of produce) excepting only church lands and glebes and urban areas and it was paid by leaseholders and occupiers of all religious denominations to the clergy of the Established Church of Ireland. There was growing resentment against this tax particularly in the period of distress which followed the Napoleonic wars and the government was forced to give way and introduce a Tithe Composition Act 1823, which replaced payment in kind by payment in cash by landlords. In order to effect this change all the agricultural land in the county which was liable to pay tithe had to be surveyed and apploted or valued. These surveys were carried out by local surveyors and the material arranged by civil parish and townland in volumes known as the Tithe Applotment Books. These books compiled between 1823 and 1837 are now deposited in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and National Archives of Ireland.
Tithe Applotment books give the name of leaseholders and occupiers, the areas of farms subject to tithe, sometimes the qualities of land and the overall valuation. It is important to appreciate that these volumes do not include the large numbers of cottiers or landless labourers, or urban dwellers, excepting those with holdings on the outskirts of the towns. In some cases, the civil parish was extra parochial, in other words outside parochial jurisdiction. This applied to land that formerly belonged to a monastery and these were often known as �Granges�, e.g. Grange of Doagh. They were not liable to the payment of title or tithes were payable to a lay impropriator. All the personal names in the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith�s Valuation for all Ireland were indexed by the National Library of Ireland, which produced the county-by-county series known as the �Index of Surnames� or Householder�s Index�. In the list below, variant �M� surnames have been extracted based on the references found in the Householder�s Index at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and begins with County Antrim.
