September 27, 1691: Arrived in Ayr from the Caribee Island, John Milliken, master of the Swan of Ayr, with a cargo of goods.
[Custom books of Ayr (NAS), E.72.3.23]

The Swan of Ayr sailed for the West Indies with master James Angus (died during the voyage) in early 1691. On its return voyage, when John Milliken was master, the Swan made a landfall near Londonderry and was arrested due to irregular documentation. Stormy weather, it was claimed, had forced her to take shelter. The Citys collector of customs, however, arrested the vessel when he discovered her papers included a coquet purporting to have been issued at Beaumaris in Anglesey. This no doubt stated the Swan had called there and that the duty on her cargo had been paid. Robert Shaw owner, persuaded the Irish Revenue Commissioners to released her by claiming the owners of the cargo had been responsible for obtaining the coquet by indirect means. He undertook to investigate the matter and gave security that he would abide by the judgement of the English Treasury Board. Robert Shaw appears to have been made a burgess and guild brother of Ayr in 1682, being the son of the late Mr. James Shaw, minister of Carnmoney Church in Ireland, and his wife Margaret Gordon, daughter of the a provost of Ayr.

[83] John Millikin merchant in Ayr
1699: State of the Process of John Millikin merchant in Ayr against John Kennedy eldest son to the deceased Alexander Kennedy of Kilhenzie and his tutors and curators. The said process at the instance of the said John Millikine verse the said John Kennedy and his tutors and curators before your Lordships for payment making to him of the sum of 4000 merks Scots of principal with the annual rent and penalty contenit in ane bond granted by John Kennedy of Glenour of principal and the said umquhile Alexander Kennedy of Kilhenzie and others as cautioners for him to the deceased John Lord Bargeny to which the said John Millikine has right by progress from John and Agnes Moore lawful children to umquhile John Moor of Monkwood. Five hundred merks Scots has already been paid back, as a discharge was granted by the said John Moor with the advice and consent of David Moor his tutor. But John Millikin objected to the foresaid discharge and insists on the full sum as David Moor was not John Moor's tutor and he should have made an inventory of the pupils means which he never did. Therefore this payment being fraudulent and collusive ought not to be sustained in prejudice of the pursuar. The lordships ordain, remit the consideration of the objections to the Lords David Home ... Then next on June 9, 1699.
The Lords sustained the discharge as granted and finds it to be presumed that he was tutor and assoilze reserving return of the discharge as accords. The bond showing the repayment was also in the process, termed Muir and his tutor to Kilhenzie and Durduff'. Dated October 11, 1688, this shows that 500 merks was paid back to John Muir lawful son to umquhile John Muir of Monkwood and David Muir his tutor. It shows that the original bond was made 6th and 8th July 1686 by Kennedy of Glenour and others and registered in the Court Books of Carrick on December 23, 1686. The original bond was also amongst the process papers, but it is so fragile that it is difficult to read. However, John Millikin is only involved in the latter stages.
