May 15, 1464: Instrument of Sasine in favour of John Fergusson of Kylkeran, in the 25 shilling land called Beach, lying in the parish of Colmonel and earldom of Carrick. June 28, 1544: Thomas Fergusoun in Auchinsowle mentioned in an assize held into the land of Jacob M�Crynnel, heir and assignee of 5 merk land of old extent of Nether Barneil, and others, lying in com. de Carrick.

[4] Thomas Fergusson in Auchinsoul
April 8, 1547: Instrument narrating that Duncan Fergussoun of Kilkerran appointed James Kennedy of Blairquhan his assignee for redemption of the 10 merk lands of Librak, in the sheriffdom of Wigtoun, from Duncan Crauford of Camlarg, which lands were apprised to the said Duncan for certain sums of money. And after the redemption James Kennedy bound himself to grant, sign and seal a letter of reversion for redemption of the lands from him on payment of the said sums and this at the sight and counsel of the Governor, the Earl of Argyll, Sir John Campbell of Lundy knight and other friends of Duncan, before whom he bound himself to present the said Duncan at his own (Kennedy's) cost. Done upon the green of Blairquhan at about 3 p.m. Witnesses: Thomas Fergussoun in Auchensoule, William Fergussoun, his son, Adam Murray, and Gilbert Kennedy, younger of Blairquhan.

[5] Thomas Fergusson in Auchensoul
April 8, 1547: Instrument narrating that James Kennedy of Blairquhan obliged himself to William Fergussoun, son of Duncan Fergussoun of Kilkarane, because Duncan Fergussoun made James Kennedy his assignee for redeeming the lands of Librak from Duncan Craufurd of Camlarg for �553. 12s. 6d. Scots, for which reason said James, obliged himself to grant to William a sufficient letter of reversion for redemption of the lands, containing the said sum only with the expenses of evidence and apprising. And that, when required on 40 days' warning, the said James shall compear in the parish church of Daly to receive the said sum on the high altar, and if he be absent William or his heirs, etc. shall count out the money on the high altar and leave it in sure keeping, and James Kennedy shall resign the lands in favour of William Fergussoun, his heirs, etc. Done upon the green of Blairquhan at about 3 p.m. Witnesses: Thomas Fergussoun in Auchensoule, William Fergussoun, his son, Adam Murray, and Gilbert Kennedy, younger of Blairquhan.

Comment: Thomas Fergusson died soon afterwards, probably at the battle of Pinkie. He had three known sons; William, his heir, Duncan, in Glenawlay (Glenalla, near Straiton) and Thomas Fergusson.

June 19, 1551: Instrument narrating that Duncan Fergus�soun in Glennaulay quitclaimed, discharged and renounced a decreet obtained by him in the sheriff court of Ayr against William Fergussoun, his brother-german, and the sum contained therein, with all the goods appraised for the said sum. Done at Kirkdomine at about 3 p.m. Witnessed by Hector Fergussoun in Dalduff and Thomas Fergusson.

Comment: William Kirkdomie is marked on Pont�s map �Kirkdomy�. An ancient chapel on the right bank of the Water of Stinchar, not far from Auchensoul where William Fergusson lived in 1551.

[7] Duncan Fergusson in Glenawlay
November 10, 1551: Instrument narrating that Duncan Kennedy of Dalchorran, baillie depute of Carrick, gave sasine to James Kennedy as heir of David Kennedy of Crochtba, of the 50s. lands of Letterpyn. Done on the said lands at about 2 p.m. Witnesses: Duncan Fergussoun in Glennawlay and Gilbert Fergussoun in Balcamy.

Comment: David Kennedy of Crochtba had died vested as of fee in the 5 merk leands of Drumbae and Crochtba, the 50s. lands of Laterpyn and the 40d. land of Carfyn in 1551.

May 5, 1552: Instrument narrating that Duncan Fergussoun in Glennaulay sold to Thomas Loggy in Ballebeg the following goods: 4 fertile cows, one "forrow" cow, 2 stirks, 4 ploughing oxen ("boves arabiles") and one ox of three years, one ox of two years, 2 bovine beasts ("bestias bovinas") of two years, being in the lands of Knokbrekis; and also 15 fertile cows, 12 "forrow ky", 5 barren cows, 11 beasts of one year old, 14 beasts of three years, 5 of two years, 80 sheep, 54 lambs, 4 young horses, one " foyll" and one "staig ", the crop of two acres of oats and the crop of one acre of bear of the land, and 2 bulls being in the lands of Glennawlay; with all right and claim he had to the said lands of Knokbrekis and Glennawlay, to remain with the said Thomas Loggy. May 5, 1552: Instrument narrating that Thomas Logy in Ballebeg quitclaimed the sale of the goods, goodwill and possession of the lands made to him by Duncan Fergussoun and renounced the same to Duncan for a sum of money paid by Duncan to Thomas. May 5, 1552: Instrument narrating that Duncan Fergussoun, brother of William Fer-gussoun in Auchinsoule, for the sum of �100 Scots delivered to him by David Muir in Kilkarran sold and delivered to David Muir 4 fer�tile cows and one "forrow " cow, 7 young barren cows, one ox of three years, 12 beasts of two years, 44 sheep, 3 heifers one horse of "Keyr " colour, a crop of 4 acres of land sown with oats, one heifer of a gray colour in Auchinsoule. Likewise David gave and rented to Duncan 5 cows and 30 sheep of said goods yearly for a boll of meal. Done at Kilkarran at about 6 p.m. Wit�nessed by Gilbert Fergussoun, Hector Fergussoun and Thomas Fergussoun.

[11] William Fergusson in Auchensoul
June 5, 1552: Instrument narrating that Gilbert Fergussoun in Balcamy gave to his daughter, Marion Fergussoun, for the favour he bore to her and in supplement of her dowry, 8 ploughing and yoked oxen with plough, yokes and other things necessary to a plough, 4 horses, the whole crop growing upon the lands of Balcamy, with the servants and shepherds in the same. And this also with the advice of Duncan Kennedy of Dalchorrane, whom Gilbert appointed as tutor and governor to his daughter, and specially with Gilbert's own advice to Marion as to the goods to be used. Likewise Gilbert for his love to Margaret Fergussoun and as supplement of her dowry granted to her 8 yoked oxen with plough, yokes and other necessaries for a plough, 8 cows, 2 horses, with all crops within the 4 merk lands of Brounestoun and Ferdenecrathir, with the servants and shepherds of the goods and lands. June 5, 1552: Instrument narrating that Thomas Fergussoun in Balquhirne gave to his son, Hector Fergussoun, all the rents, profits and emoluments belonging to himself from the 20s. lands of Balquhirne, occupied by John Wycht, during the life�time of said Thomas, with power to Hector to dispose of them by advice of Gilbert Fergussoun in Balcamy, his uncle. Done at Balcamy at about 4 p.m. Witnessed by Duncan Fergussoun, Hector Fergussoun and Thomas Fergussoun.

[13] William Fergusson in Auchensoul
May 20, 1553. Instrument narrating that James Kennedy of Blairquhan acknowledged that the �10 lands of the Mains of Knockdoleane and Craige were lawfully redeemed by Robert Grahame, brother german and heir of deceased Andrew Grahame of Knokdoleane, by payment to James Kennedy of various sums of money specified in a reversion made by the said James to deceased Andrew Grahame. The said James (gave up) all evidence delivered to him by said Andrew, but he protested that the redemption of the foresaid lands should not prejudice the action and claim of spuilzie ("spoilie") allegedly committed by the said Robert, and for the pursuit of the same he acknowledged that he had retained only an instrument of sasine of the Mains of Knokdoleane. [14] Land of Auchensoul
April 15, 1554: Instrument narrating that Gilbert Fergussoun of Balcamy intimated to Duncan Crauford of Camlarg that long ago he was made by his father, Duncan Fergussoun of Kilkarran, assignee for life in and to all rents and profits of the lands of Auchinsoule, Cunray, Brokloch and Machermore and other lands as far as the property belonged to Duncan Fergussoun, according to a decreet of the Lords of Council pronounced on the non-entry of the said lands. Protesting meanwhile that whatever Duncan Crauford of Camlarg did in the premises with any other alleged assignee should not injure Gilbert's right or title by reason of the above decreet. July --, 1554: Instrument at the instance of Duncan Kennedy of Dalquhorrane in name of Janet Kennedy narrating that Gilbert Kennedy of Balmoclanoquhan gave sasine in liferent to said Janet Kennedy, his spouse, of the �4 lands of Glenmuk, viz. the 20s. lands of Ballymore. November 9, 1576: Instrument of Sasine directed to the baillie of Carrick and his deputies, to William Fergusson in Auchensoul and George McIlmorrow in Kerris, and each of them, conjunctly and severally, baillies of Carrick in that part, in favour of Archibald Stewart, brother and procurator of James Stewart of Argown, cessioner and assignee, lawfully constituted in and to the action of non-entry of the five merklands of old extent of Gas, lying in the bailliery of Carrick and shire of Ayr, which formerly pertained to Robert Stewart, the said Archibald Stewart his father, administrator and tutor, for his interest, Janet Cathcart, and Hugh Wallace of Manfurde her husband, for his interest, and at the instance of the said James as cessioner and assignee aforesaid, were duly apprised for the sum of �1220 Scots, for the fermes and duties of the said lands, for the space of sixty-one years or thereby, immediately preceding the 12th day of February 1567. June 14, 1603: Signature by James VI. promising that, on forfeiture of lands of Thomas Kennedy of Drummurchie, brother of the laird of Bargany, Hew Kennedy of Bennane, Walter Mure of Cloncarde and James Steuart of Brevick, guilty of burning house of Auchensoule in Carrick, etc., he shall dispone the same to John, earl of Cassillis.

[21] Duncan Crawford of Auchensoul
December 2, 1613: Instrument of Renunciation by Duncan Crauford of Auchinsoule and Nether Skeldoun, Agnes McCulloch, his spouse, and James Crauford, his son, to John, earl of Cassillis, following on contract of wadset for the lands of Glentairlie, parish of Straiton in Carrick, sheriffdom of Ayr (dated December 4, 1612), and containing obligation to procure infeftment in lands of Nether Skeldoune for John Crawford, his son, with liferent to the said Agnes and James, and under reversion for 4,000 merks Scots.

December 4, 1612: Back-Bond by Duncan Crauford of Achinsowle, Agnes McCulloch, his spouse, and James Crauford, his son, to John, earl of Cassillis, whereby they accept 64 bolls victual yearly in lieu of rent of lands wadset to them, failing which they will revert to the ordinary maills thereof.

[23] Helen Cathcart in Auchensoul
March 9, 1615: Testament testamentar of Helen Cathcart spouse of William Fergusson in Auchensoul in the parish of Girvan who died in March 1615, given up by her own hand on March 9, 1615. She makes William Fergusson her spouse her only executor and leaves him her free gear. There is the usual inventory of livestock, crops, household goods, and clothes amounting to �822. She owed to debts to a number of people (no Fergussons or Mullikens), which amounted to �720. To be divided in two (i.e. there were no children).

December 21, 1620: In a charter of this date, the lands of Knokbrek are mentioned as occupied by William Fergussone in Auchinsoull.

September 1625: Testament dative of Lucrese Campbell, spouse to Andrew Kennedy in Pinblaid in the parish of Dailly who died in September 1625, given up by the said Andrew Kennedy in name of Robert Kennedy, lawful son to the defunct. There is the usual inventory of goods and stock, and debts owed by and to the defunct. There was due to them �43 6. 8d. by William Fergusson in Auchensoul and James Reid in Shalloch.

February 28, 1668: Charter granting to William Fergusone of Auchinsaule, and his heirs and assigness, subject to the legal reversion, - the 8 merk lands of Louchtowne, the 4 merk lands of Drumrne, Gremane, Barledue, Culnoige, Barniling, the 21 merk lands of Miltowne and Kirkinder, the 42s lands of Kilcrouchie alias Mairtowne, extending into the barony of Lavingstowne, in the parishes of Glassortown, Sortie (Sorbie) and Pennyghame, sheriffdom of Wigtowne, and belonging to Alexander Fergusone of Kilkarran in property, or to one or other of his predecessors who died last infeft; also the �10 lands of Lochronnald, with buildings and pertinent in the parish of Kirkouan and same sheriffdom; the 8 merk lands of Dwaltown, with buildings and pertinent in the parish of Sorbie and same sheriffdom, belonging to the said Alexander Ferguson as above; the �10 lands of Kilkerran, with manor place, woods, fishings and all pertinent in the parish of Balye (Dailly), belonging, etc, as above; the �6 lands of Over and Nether Auchinsowles, and the 40s land of Meikle and Little Brockloches in the bailieary of Carrick belonging, etc, as above. Which lands, etc, were appraised from the said Alexander Fergusone, for himself, and as charged to enter heir to Sir John Fergusone of Kilkarran, knight, his father, the late [black] Fergusone of Kilkarran, his grandfather, or one or other of them who died last infeft, at the instance of the said William Fergusone and his heirs, for payment to them of the sum of 5897 merks 4s 8d of principal, and 294 merks 6s 8d of sheriff�s fee. The decreet endorsed 22nd July 1663, in a court held at Edinburgh 18th June, before James Muire, messenger; one sasine on any part of the ground to be sufficient: - Rendering therefore yearly the duties and services used and wont.
