[1] Land of Kilhilt and Drummore
March 14, 1601: Contract whereby Mr John Kennedy younger of Baltersan will obtain the presentation and collation of Ninian Adair of Kilhilt to the abbacy of Saulseat and all the fruits, casualties etc, of the lands of Kilhilt and Drummore, belonging to the benefice by demission of Mr. John Johnston, merchant burgess of Edinburgh.

[2] Testament of Gawin Hamilton, bishop of Galloway
February --, 1612: [Hamilton] �The Testament dative and Inventar etc �.. pertaining to umquhill Gawand Bishop of Galloway (there is no day of death given, just February 1612) faithfully made and given up be Elison Hamilton relict of the said umquhill Gawand in name and behalf of Gawand Elizabeth Joane and Anna Hamiltones, bairnes lawful to the defunct and executors dative to the goods and gear be decreet of the Commissary of Hamilton on 12 June, 1612.
He had goods and gear etc to the sum of �2449 6/8d.
Many people seemed to owe him money on the rents and all the church land in his living.
This came to a colossal sum of some �19, 749 6/8d.
Together they made the sum of some �22, 198 13/4d.
The Deid�s part was �7426 12d.

June 19, 1612: Letter of Gift by James VI to John Hamilton, son of Gavin Hamilton, bishop of Galloway, creating him Abbot and Commendator of Soulseat in succession to the deceased Master John Johnston, Abbot and Titular thereof.

Note: John Hamilton took the M.A. degree at Glasgow University in 1618 and on September 16, 1622, was admitted minister of the Kirk of Craigie.

[4] Gavin Hamilton, bishop of Galloway
1622: Decreet of Horning issued under the Signet, executing letters of horning in 4 forms. It was dated 1615 and names action against Alison Hamilton, Gavin�s wife, and children, Johne, Gavin, Margaret, Elizabeth, Jeane and Anna Hamilton, and also James Dunlop younger of that ilk now spouse to the said Margaret for his interest in debts still owed by the late Bishop.

October 1619: Confirmation by Mr John Hamilton, minister at Craigie, son of the deceased Gavin Hamilton, bishop of Galloway, and having the abbacy of Soulseat by gift under the Privy Seal of the date [-], 16[-], to William Adair of Kilhilt of the gift and provision of the benefice of the lands of Kilhilt and Drummore. Written by Gilbert Ross, priest at the Collegiate Church of Maybole and subscribed by Mr. John Hamilton before the witnesses, Mr. John Bonar, minister of Maybole, Patrick Adair of Auldtoun, John Kennedy merchant in Maybole, William Adair of Kilhilt and Patrick Adair.

[6] John Hamilton, minister of Craigie
October 14, 1619: Arbitration of Dispute between William Adair of Kilhilt and Mr John Hamilton, minister at Craigie, in the presence of Allan Caiscail in Brownhill and Mr. James Bonar, minister of Maybole, judges arbitrators, with Sir John Wallace of Carinehill, knight, as the oversman, who agreed that Mr. William Adair of Kilhilt was to find sufficient cautioners and sureties ... to pay to Mr. John Hamilton the sum of 11 merks at the terms following, 100 merks at Martinmas next to come and 500 merks at Martinmas 1620. Witnessed by Patrick Adair brother german to William Adair, William Leggat in Burnbank, John Allison notary writer thereof, and Mr. William Wallace, minister of Symington.

    [6a] William Adair of Kilhilt
    December 8, 1581: Purchase by William Adair of Kilhilt and Ninian Adair, his son and heir from John, Commendator of Soulseat, Helen McDowell, lady of Logan and George Campbel, her spouse, for his interest with many others listed (this appears like all the larger teind payers of Kirkmaiden or Saulseat, on an agreement on May 10, 1578 and registered in the Books of Council and Session) for the purchase of the parsonage and vicarage of Kirkmaiden lying in the Rhins of Galloway and sheriffdom of Wigtown. Written at Edinburgh by Alexander Hay, no witnesses given.

    [6b] John Hamilton
    1629: Discharge by Mr. John Hamilton to Robert Adair of Kilhilt where upon he gave the tack of teinds both the parsonage and vicarage, fruis with emoluments and duties of the abbacy of Soulseat for 19 years, to Robert Adair of Kilhilt for the yearly payment of �40 at Witsunday and Martinmas proportionally. Witnessed by John Quhytsword in Maybole, Patrick Adair of Altoun, Mr. John Chalmer of Lawchne(?), James Brown servitor to the said Robert Adair of Kilhilt.

December 8, 1627: Instrument of Sasine in favour of Matthew Campbell of Barcreochill in the 40 shilling land of Auchinrugland, with peat rights on the muir of Galston in the barony of Craigie and bailliary of Kyle, disponed to him by Hugh Wallace of Craigie by charter dated at Craigie on November 8, 1627, and witnessed by Matthew Wallace of Dundonald, John Tait of Adam Miln, Mr. John Hamilton minister of Craigie, James Campbell at the Market Cross of Newmilns, Alexander Nisbet of Greenholm and Charles Hall, notary. The sasine was give up by James Johnston of Dalloy, as baillie, and witnessed by Alexander Nisbet of Greenholm, James Campbell, elder, in Newmilns, Andrew Lockhart there, James Campbell at the Market Cross there, Robert Nisbet in Threepwood and James Purvyance in Greenholm and Charles Hall.

    May, 19, 1624: Register of Sasine in favour Jean Milliken, relict of the deceased Alexander Loudon in Newmilns and John Loudon her son, by James Loudon in Mill of Newmilns, heritable proprietor, for a house and yard in Newmilns, barony of Loudon.

August 11, 1628: Tack by Robert Adair of Kinhilt and John Hamiltowne, minister at Craigie, to John, earl of Cassillis, of certain teinds for four years. Mains of Saulseat, parish of Soulseat [Inch], sheriffdom of Wigtown. Notary was James Glover and witnessed by Patrick Adair of Altoun, William Adair of Craigie and James Glover, notary. It was subscribed by the Earl of Cassillis with witnesses by James Torrie, Thomas McAllan and L. Kennedy.

November 5, 1629: Obligation by John Hamiltoune, minister at Craigie, to John, Earl of Cassillis, to obtain rectification of error in statement of feu-duty of Soulseat Mylne in decreet of - July 1629, and to continue payment of �feu-duty of Vchtrilure� till such time as the Earl and the laird of Garthland shall be agreed re holding thereof. Date at Mains of Soulseat and Vchtrilure, etc., sheriffdom of Wigtown, written by John McIlwraith in Maybole and subscribed by John Hamilton at Maybole on November 5, 1629, and witnessed by David Kennedy of Crockmichael and the said John McIlwraith.

[10] John Hamilton, mininster of Craigie
November 9, 1637: Bond by Sir Hugh Wallace of Craigie, knight, baronet, infefting his sister Margaret, �for the brotherlie love and favour I bear towards my sister�, spouse to Mr. John Hamilton minister of the Kirk of Craigie, John and Margaret Hamilton their children and other children �to be procreate betwixt them�, of an annual rent of �176 to be uplifted from his lands.

[13] John Hamilton son of John Hamilton, late minister of Craigie
November 21, 1649: Instrument of Sasine taken at the hand of a discreet man John Hamilton son to Mr. John Hamilton late minister of Craigie for himself and as lawful attorney in name and behalf of Margaret Wallace spouse to the said Mr. John his mother and of Margaret Hamilton his sister upon the ground of the lands respectively following. The one and a half merk land of Coatland, the 18 shilling land of Highcraig, the ferme land of Halftoun and Ladycraig possessed by John Mugersland, the 10 shillings land of Langsyde possessed by John Simpson, the ten shilling land of Muthflat possessed by John Mitchell and that part of the lands of Langcraig possessed by John Black, John Caldwell and Isobel McSpeddan all lying in the barony of Craigie etc. The said John Hamilton had a contract containing a precept of sasine betwixt Sir Hugh Wallace of Craigie, knight, baronet on the one part of the said Margaret Wallace, John and Margaret Hamilton on the other part of the date at Craigie and Craigietone on November 8, 1649, instant of giving in sasine and actual real and corporal possession of the said lands to the said Margaret Wallace in liferent and the said John and Margaret Hamilton in fee heretablie in manner following, redeemable be payment to the said John and Margaret Hamilton their heirs and assignees be the said Sir Hugh by the sum of 5000 merks, with 2 parts to the said John and the third part to the said Margaret. Witnesses to the precept were Robert Wallace of Brighouse, Mr. George Crawford late minister at Kilbride, Andrew Crawford of Irving (?) and Richard Broun writer. Witnesses to the sasine were John Mugersland, John Simpson, John Mitchell and John Allason notary in Craigie, Richard Broun writer.

[14] John Hamilton son of John Hamilton, late minister of Craigie
March 28, 1650: Instrument of Sasine taken at the hand of John Hamilton lawful son of Mr. John Hamilton recently minister of the church of Craigie as attorney for him and his wife Margaret Wallace who is the only daughter of the late Michael Wallace of Inchgotrick and his apparent heir procreated between him and Helen Cathcart his wife. He held in his hands a charter from Sir Hugh Wallace Knight and baronet superior of the lands and others underwritten to John Hamilton and Margaret Wallace in conjunct infeftment the longest liver and to their heirs heritably and irredeemably of all and whole the lands of Inchgotrick, the 5 merk land of old extent in the �barony of Richartoune� and bailiery of Kylestewart and sheriffdom of Ayr. The precept was dated on March 7, 1650, with witnesses Robert Wallace of Craighouse, Robert Wallace of Holinstoune and the said Mr. John Hamilton and William Mitchell notary public. There were no Milligan witnesses to the sasine.

[15] Margaret Wallace daughter of Michael Wallace of Inchgotrick
March 31, 1650: Instrument of Sasine taken personally by Margaret Wallace only daughter lawful and apparent heir of the late Archibald [sic it must be a mistake for Michael] of Inchgotrick now wife of John Hamilton only son of Mr. John Hamilton lately at the church of Craigie minister, holding in her hands a sasine containing a precept of clare constat made by an honourable man Sir Hugh Wallace of Craigie knight baronet to the said Margaret Wallace as the only daughter and legitimate heir of her said late father. It was clearly known that the late Michael Wallace of Inchgotrick father of Margaret Wallace now wife of John Hamilton son of Mr. John Hamilton recently minister at the church of Craigie, bearer of these presents, died last vest and seized at faith and peace of our sovereign lord the King in the lands of Inchgotrick, and that Margaret Wallace is the only lawful daughter and heir apparent of Michael Wallace her father in these lands. She is given sasine. There are no Milligan witnesses.

[16] John Hamilton son of John Hamilton, late minister of Craigie
November 1, 1651: George Herries in Mosgavill and John Spottiswood younger merchant in Mauchline as attorney for Helen Cathcart his spouse with a charter of obligation and a precept of sasine there insert made and granted by John Hamilton son to Mr. John Hamilton minister at Craigie with consent and assent of Margaret Wallace lawful daughter to the deceased Michael Wallace of Inchgotrick his future spouse as they are designed in the said obligation whereby and for the sum of 4000 merks of Scotland borrowed from the said George Herries and his said spouse, they are infeftment and seising George Herreis and his spouse the longer liver in conjunct infeftment in all and hail the lands of Inchgotrick to be holden under the reversion provisions mentioned therein. The letters of obligation were dated on December 13, 1649, and were redeemable by payment of the said sum of 4000 merks. Witnesses were Allan Cathcart of Waterhead, John Cathcart of Bardarroch and John Spotswood in Ayr. There were no Milligan witnesses to the infeftment.

March 8, 1662: Obligation by Robert Dickie, chapman in Riccarton parish in the sheriffdom of Ayr, as principal, and John Hamilton of Inchgotrick, as cautioner, that said Robert shall compear when required in the action of improbation, raised against him by Theodore Montgomerie of Tongue over; 1st, Bond by Theodore Montgomerie, portioner of Barinmure to Robert Dickie, packman, for 300 merks due by the said Theodore's deceased mother, Janet Hamilton on May 3, 1654, and 2nd, for 250 merks, for merchant ware bought and received by said Theodore.

[19] Margaret Wallace in Inchgotrick
March, 1669: Testament dative of Margaret Wallace in Inchgotrick in the parish of Riccarton who died March 1669, give up by Christian Howie daughter of the defunct and executrix. There is the usual inventory of stocks and crops, insights and plenishing of the house, and clothes, which amount to �66. 15s. 4d. There were debts owed by the defunct, including, mail and duty owed to John Hamilton of Inchgotrick, and fees and bounty to four servants.

September 16-26, 1696: Charter of resignation and novodamus by Sir William Wallace of Craigie to Michael Hamilton, son of deceased John Hamilton of Inchgotrick, of the lands of Inchgotrick and Ethornhill in the parish of Riccarton and bailiary of Kylestewart.
