Documents and Manuscripts

The parish of Mauchline is bounded north by Riccarton and Galston, east by Sorn, south by Auchinleck, south-west by Ochiltree and Stair, and west by Tarbolton and Craigie. In 1165, Walter, son of Alan, Steward of Scotland granted a charter to the Cisterian Monks of Melrose of the lands of Mauchline, in those days the parish extended to the boundaries of Lanarkshire at Glenbuck, and comprehended the territory now forming the parishes of Sorn and Muirkirk. The monks established a priory of their own order at Mauchline, which remained a cell of Melrose till the Reformation in 1560. Mauchline was a covenanters stronghold from the Reformation, when the Scottish parliament adopted the Confession of Faith. In 1606, the ecclesiastical lands, etc., about Mauchline were formed into a temporal lordship in favour of Hugh, Lord Loudoun. The town of Mauchline was at the same time made a burgh of barony. In 1631 what is now Muirkirk parish, and in 1636 what is now Sorn parish, were annexed to form separate parishes. In 1647, a battle took place on Mauchline moor, between the Royalist forces of Charles I, and Covenanters with the covenanters claiming victory. In 1684 the Covenanter James Smith was wounded during a skirmish at "Burn of Ann" in Kyle, taken to Mauchline where he died in prison, and in 1685 five men were dragged out of their homes and executed at the loan.
