Newton Parish Church Records


In 1779, the southern of part the parish of Prestwick was separated to form the parish of Newton Upon Ayr, which was bounded on the south by Ayr parish and on east by St. Quivox. Newton parish is divided from that of Ayr by the river. In Pigot�s Directory of 1837, weaving was carried on in the town, which was established partly through the labour of Glasgow manufacturers. There were also four iron foundries, a salt works, and the extensive ship-building yards of Messrs Cowan & Sloans. The coals from the Ayr colliery and the colliery in the parish of St. Quivox were shipped on the Newton side the harbour.
