Burials 1617-1854

The parish of Dumfries is bounded on the north by Holywood, Kirkmahoe and Tinwald parishes, on the east by the parish of Torthorwald and south by the parish of Carlaverock. The extant register of Burials commences in 1617 with gaps between November 1623 to September 1635, after which there are burials until June 1650 and a further gap until February 1655. There are no entries between February 1663 and August 1667, and a further gap between February 1791 and January 1807, with only three for 1792, 1804 and 1806. Dumfries has the earliest collection of baptismal registers dating from 1617, and married and burial registers, which dates respectively from 1616 and 1617. A cholera epidemic occurred in the parish in the fall of 1832. Between 15 September and 27 November 422 persons died. Many were buried in common graves.

Grierson denied the charge of as an unjust libel, claiming that if she received any blows, she very well deserved it because she had come in to the entry to his house and by her scandalous tongue abusing him by calling him very bad names not to born with.
