February, 1685: Testament dative of Elizabeth Johnstone relict of deceased James Grierson of Dalgoner who died in February 1685, given up by Margaret Carson relict of deceased James Grierson of Larglanglie, executor dative qua creditriz in so far as the deceased Samuel Grierson of Dalgoner and the said deceased Elisabeth Johnstone his mother by Bond dated January 28, 1679, obliged them to be justly owing to Thomas McBurnie, merchant burgess of Dumfries the sum of 100 merks. November 24, 1691 [Dunscore] Instrument of Sasine in favour of William Neilsone and James Neilsone beyond the lane, attorney of for William Neilsone merchant in England, by Robert Mulligane portioner of Newtoune with letters of obligation made by Robert Mulligane to William Neilsone of the present date and by virtue of �126. 4s. money Scots the said Robert Mulligane infeft William Neilsone in all and whole the said 7s. 6d. land of the 30 shilling land of Newtoune lying in the parish of Dunscore and under reversion according to the letters of obligation. Sasine given between 11 and 12 am on 24 November, 1691 and witnessed by Edward Maxwell of Straquhan, Thomas Smith in Dempsterton, Gilbert Neilsone in Kenmuir and James McMurdie in Laggan.

[98] Janet Grierson spouse of John Mulligane in Edgarton
April 21, 1696: [Dunscore] Instrument of Sasine given upon the ground of the 6/3d land of Edgertoune with the pertinents compeared personally James McMurdie in McCheynston as baillie in that part to the deceased John Milligan in Edgartoune and Janet Greirsone spouses specially constitute by the precept of Sasine. Also compeared John Rennick in Edgartoun having a bond of obligation made and granted by the said John Milligan and Janet Greirsone spouse to John Greirson in Milligantoun dated October 23, 1672, years for 300 merks Scots of principal to be paid between now and the term of Martinmas next to come with �20 penalty in case of failure together with the due and ordinary annual rent of the principal sum ... and for the more security the said John Milligan bound and obliged himself to infeft and seise the said John Greirson in the 6/3d land of Edgarton. And now the said John Greirson by a letter of assignation dated May 11, 1695, sold and assigned to John Rennick the debt and also the infeftment if there was no repayment. Sasine was given to John Rennick on April 21, 1696.

[101] Robert Milligane of Newtounhead
June 4, 1703: [Dunscore] Instrument of Sasine in favour of John Neilson. Compared John Neilson writer in Dumfries in whose favour the heritable bond is concocted together with a discreet man Robert Milligane of Newtounhead grantor of the said bond, for further security and more sure payment of the principal sum of �173 Scots money, John Neilson is infeft in a yearly annual rent of �10. 7. 6d. Scots money as being the due and ordinary annual rent of the aforesaid principal sum of �173 Scots, to be taken a two terms of the year Whitsunday and Martinmas by equal portions worth of all and hail the said Robert Milligane�s 7s. 6d. land called Newtounhead lying within the parish of Dunscore and sheriffom of Dumfries, or worth of any part or portion thereof readiest mails (rents), fermes (farm rents), profits and duties thereof, beginning the first term payment of the said yearly annual rent at the term of Martinmas next to come. This bond, was �always redeemable and under reversion� of payment of the principal sum. Done on the ground of Newtounhead 1-2 pm in the presence of John Cunningham of Birkshaw, James Grierson of Dalgonar, Gilbert Neilsone in Cottach and Alexander Ireland servitor to the said John Cunningham by deliverance of earth and stone and one penny money as the use is.

[102] Robert Milligan of Newtounhead
July 1707: Testament dative of Robert Milligan in Newtounhead. The actual testament and its warrant are lost. The record of its existence survives in the minute book for the register of Testaments in the appendix under the heading �List of Testaments for which the record is now lost, taken from the Minute�. In the minute book, Robert is actually called �of� Newtounhead. As it was a testament dative Robert Milligan in Newtounhead died intestate, and that his testament was just an inventory of his goods and gear and had no will attached.

January 1, 1712: Recommendation from the Presbytery of Dumfries that the Council keep in prison Agnes Ritchie from Sanquhar who had been found "in a naked bed with a man whom she calls William�Mulligan�tailor in Kirkmichael at Cottack in Dunscore parish so that she will appear for censure for adultery as the presbytery sees fit". [104] Robert Mulligan in Dempsterton & John Mulligan in Edgartown
February 22, 1722: Summary of the proceedings brought before the Court of Session in Edinburgh by David Renwick in Hiltown of Cowhill, nephew and heir to the deceased John Renwick in Edgartown on 9 December 1721 and on 22 February 1722. It was taken against Robert Mulligane in Dempsterton and James McCubbin of McCubbinston, William Ireland of Caldon John Greirson of Edgartown, Andrew McCubbin there, forcing them to either become heirs or renounce their claim to be heirs of�John Mulligan in Edgartown and Janet Grierson his spouse.�� It concerns a bond of 300 merks Scots granted to John Mulligan and Janet Grierson by John Renwick in Edgartown. They do not appear to have been able to repay the money to him and John and Janet granted to him as security, their part of the land of Edgartown until such times as they could repay the debt and recover the property.�After the death of John Mulligan, Janet Grierson and John Rennick (died in 1719), the nephew of the latter, David Renwick took legal action against�their heirs to recover the land (see below for the Instrument of Sasine). This document forms part of a collection of papers with the casefile presented to the Court of Session in Edinburgh by David Renwick.

[105] John Milligan in Edgarton
October 25, 1725: Instrument of Sasine in favour of David Rennick in Hilltoun of Cowhill came with a precept of Clare Constat granted by George Maxwell of Carnshalloch superior of the lands showing that he was the son of John Rennick of Edgartoun who had these 6s 3d land of Edgartoun, lying in the parish of Dunscore and sheriffdom of Dumfries. The only reference to John Milligan in Edgartoun is in the history of the lands when they were confirmed by the late John Milligan in Edgartoun in favour of John Greirson. There were no Milligan witnesses to the Sasine, which was given between l-2pm on 25 October, 1725.

[106] Robert Milligan, portioner of Dempsterton
December 19, 1747: Service of Heir in favour of Robert Milligan to his father John Milligan of Cargene, heir general etc. There were no Milligans on the inquest and being a general service, there were no details of the lands. It simply states that the late John Milligan of Cargane, son of Robert Milligan portioner of Dempsterton, father of Robert Milligan bearer of these presents, died at faith and peace, and that the said Robert Milligan is the only son and lawful and nearer heir of the late John Milligan his father.

[107] Robert Milligan, portioner of Dempsterton
December 31, 1747: Register of Sasine taken at the hand of Archibald Malcolm, notary public, narrating that Robert Thomson in Millarland compeared personally on ground of the ten shilling land of Meikle Dempstertoun as baillie for Robert Milligan portioner of Dempsterton, specially constituted by the precept of sasine contained in the Disposition which continues in full force as well after as before the death of the grantor or person to whom granted. Also compeared personally Robert Milligan only son and nearest lawful heir served and retoured to the deceased John Milligan in Cargane son of the above Robert Milligan of portioner of Dempsterton, with the following writs:
[1] Disposition of the date of the precept of sasine after insert made and granted by the said Robert Milligan portioner of Dempsterton (father to the said John Milligan now deceased), whereby the said Robert Milligan sold, alienated and disponed to and in favour of John Milligan his son and his heirs etc. heritable and irredeemably his ten shilling land of Meikle Dempsterton in the parish of Dunscore and sheriffdom of Dumfries.
[2] The said Robert Milligan son of the said decease John Milligan had an extract of General Service as to his father before the baillies of Dumfries dated December 19, 1747, �as the same duly retoured to the chancery testifies�.
The which disposition and General Retoured Service the said Robert Milligan last named presented to the said Robert Thomson as baillie desiring him and requiring him � to give sasine and infeftment of the ten shilling land of Meikle Dempsterton and pertinents. He in turn gave them to the notary public, who read them out along with the rest of the Disposition made out to John Milligan, to be infeft and seised in the lands of Dempsterton in the parish of Dunscore. This Disposition, granted by Robert Milligan portioner of Dempsterton, was written by George Bell writer in Dumfries and dated 24th February 1725, and witnessed by Thomas Dickson present dean in Dumfries and the said George Bell and signed by them and Robert Milligan senior.
After the reading, Robert Thomson baillie gave and delivered heritable estate and sasine real and actual corporal possession of all and hail the lands of Dempsterton to the said Robert Milligan younger heir aforesaid. This was done between 12 noon and 1.00 p.m. on December 31, 1747 in the presence of Robert Milligan son to the said Robert Milligan elder by his present second marriage with Agnes Robson, James Bell in Cargenston in Troqueer and Joseph Pagan servant to the said James Bell.

[107] Lillias and Mary Milligane, portioners of Newton
September 3, 1748: Retour of Chancery of Lilly and Mary Milligane, daughters of John Milligan, to their grandfather Robert Milligan portioner of Newton, heir�s portioner general. The inquest, with no Milligans on it, stated that the late Robert Milligan portioner of Newton grandfather of Lily and Mary Milligane daughters of the late John Milligan, who was son of the said late Robert Milligan and bearers of these presents, died at faith and peace of the King and that Lily and Mary are the lawful and nearer heirs portioner of the late Robert Milligan their grandfather.
