Kirkmahoe Parish Church Records


The parish of Kirkmahoe is bounded on the north by the parish of Closeburn, on the east by Tynwald, on the south by Dumfries and southwest by Holywood and on the west across the river Nith by Keir. There are baptismal and marriages from 1720. Baptism blank Nov. 1748 to Aug. 1753. Imperfect leaf at 1759 and one at 1763. Blank June 1759 to Feb. 1762. After 1763 no regular records appear to have been kept until Sept. 1797, but at that part there are eleven pages containing irregular entries of whole families registered together, dated 1771 to 1818. Marriages blank Nov. 1748 to March 1753. Entries Feb. 1757 to Dec. 1763 are among the baptisms for same period. Blank June 1759 to Feb. 1762. Exc. two entries for 1811, and one for 1817, no record after Dec. 1763. Proclamation fees 1729 to 1748, and mortcloth dues till 1747, then blank until Jan. 1800, after which deaths. Blank Dec. 1803 to Jan. 1818, except one entry in 1811. Burials ends Dec. 1818.

Kirk Session held at Kirkton, sederunt, Mr. Lawson, Moderator, with all the elders, except James Walker and John Newlands. This day after prayers the moderator and the session, made choice of John Milligan as the elder to attend the Synod and Presbyteries for the next half year.

Kirk Session held at Kirkton, Janet Milligan in Quarrelwood an unmarried woman having been summoned was called and compeared Being interrogated by the moderate she acknowledged herself to be with child. That Thomas Davidson servant to James Cowan in Quarrelwood was father of the child that the guilt was committed in the field and that she had no presumption against him nor had anything more to say and confused the moderator to sign for her.

Thomas Davidson being attending without the door was called in and acknowledged the both of the above confession in fornication. Singed Thomas Davidson.

They were both rebuked and ordered to appear before the congregation against Sabbath first.
