QUEENSBERRY ESTATE TENANTS’ LISTS

(Drumlanrig Estate)

DRUMLANRIG ESTATE

List of the rents due by the tenants of the Drumlanrig Estate, compiled by Archibald Douglas of Fingland at Drumlanrig on 11 October, 1695, for his Grace James, Duke of Queensberry, for the years and terms of Whitsunday and Martinmas 1693 and Whitsunday and Martinmas 1694, and 1695, being 2 ½ years. It lists the tenants in the parishes of Kirkbride, Durisdeer, Morton, Closeburn, Dalgarno, Penpont, Tynron, and for the purposes teinds and feus, Glencairn and Glenesslin. It is not a complete rental, though, it is clear that a large proportion of the tenants in the parishes mentioned were in fact in arrears as in most cases nearly every farm in the parishes mentioned was arrears. Broken tenants implies that they had been evicted. There is also included rental rolls of the parishes of Kirkbride and Morton dated possibly between 1666-1671.
