Tinwald Parish Church Records


The parish of Tinwald is bounded on the north by Kirkmichael, on the east by Lochmaben, on the south by Torthorwald, and on the west by the Kirkmahoe. The church records for Tinwald are deficient with only baptisms dating from 1789 onward. There are no early marriage or burial records with the Proclamation register only dating from 1832. The Tinwald Kirk Session dateS from 1762 onwards (CH2/1316). These mainly contained the Poors� fund minutes and accounts 1762-1844, The earliest Milligan baptism only dates from 1817. In the Dumfries marriage register, the proclamation of Helen Milligan daughter to Robert Milligan in the parish of Dumfries to William Dinwoodie son of the deceased John Dinwoodie in the parish of Tinwald is recorded in 1764. William Dinwoodie was the treasurer of Tinwald Kirk Session. They were both buried in Tinwald Churchyard were there is a memorial to them.

Tinwald Kirk Session 1762-1820

The minutes of Tinwald Kirk Session commence on 18 April, 1762; present were the minister, Mr. John Marshall, moderator, James Bratton and William Dinwoodie, elders. The clerk was Mr. James Frazer, and the treasurer, William Dinwoodie. The minutes mainly record the accounts of the parish, including, monies paid out to the poor, the church officer, the parish clerk and the parish school. Mr. James Frazer was the session clerk and school master at Amisfield. The names of the elders who attended each session are often omitted with the clerk simply recording the �moderate and elders were present�.

March 30, 1777
At Tinwald Kirk Session, the sederunt the Rev. Mr. Robertson of Kirkconnell, moderator, and elders. This day the session being constituted by Mr. Robertson, Mr. John Williamson who was ordained minister of the parish on Thursday 27th Current was put in possession of the chair. The session closed with prayer.

The minutes note a payment on 22 September to the sum of �5 left to the poor by the late Robert Milligan at Amisfield place by his son James, discharged.

In October, by cash, painting Robt. Milligan's name upon the mortification board letters at 3rd for 2 shillings and 3 pence.

February 12, 1810
Advertisement: Farms upon the estate of Amisfield. To let, for term of years, by public roup, upon Thursday the 15th day of March next, in the George Inn, Dumfries, at one o�clock afternoon.

Lot 1st, The farm of Hazel-Rigg, as lately possessed by James Milligan.
Lot 2nd, The farm of Lawridding, as possessed by the Heirs of Robert Milligan, with part of the Mains of Amisfield.
Lot 3rd, The farm of Blair-Hall, as possessed by John Neil, with part of the Mains of Amisfield.

These farms lie in the parish of Tinwald, and county of Dumfries, only five miles from the town of Dumfries. The tenants� entry is to be at Whitsunday first 1810. The soil is rich and fertile, and is well known to produce all kinds of grain of the quality. Every encouragement will be given to tenants, in regard to houses dikes. A plan and admeasurement of the farms are to be seen at Amisfield House, where every information may be hand respecting the conditions of the roup, and other particulars. Amisfield, 12th February, 1810.
