[1] John & Andrew NcNaucht of Dalquhairn
October 16, 1473: Crown charter dated at Edinburgh whereby the King granted Andrew McNaucht son and heir apparent of John McNaucht of Dalquhairn and his heirs, the 15 merk land of Dalquharn and Cragow within the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright; which he the said John resigned; reserving free life tenancy to the said John and a reasonable third to Margaret McNaucht his wife, when it shall have happened [i.e. his John�s death].

1485: [Translation] Exchequer account of the �37 10 shilling ferme of the third part of the �15 land within the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, remaining in the King�s hand for the space of seven years without sasine having been taken by reason of ward, through sasine having been given to Edigdia McNaucht of the same November 11, [1485] within this reckoning, from which was sent to the reckoning, from the sheriff in that part, for giving the said sasines.

1486: [Translation] Exchequer account of the ferme of the third of the �15 lands within the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright belonging to Edigdia McNaucht of which the account was oppressive a year having been passed, out of which the lord King granted to James Barbour and to John Barbour, chaplain, his son, ward of all and singular the lands of the late Andrew McNaucht wherever they were within the kingdom of Scotland, until the heirs of the same will have recovered hereditary sasine of the said lands, as is shown in letters of the lord King under the Privy Seal and by signature from the settlement to the treasury and others shown on the account, �37 10 shillings.

March --, 1505: Action before the Lords of Council by Cuthbert Amuligane of Craggow (Crogo) and Marion McNaucht his spouse against John Campbell of Templeland and Margaret Barber his spouse, on behalf of Robert Langmuir and Thomas Amuligane, that John is to pay the said Robert and Thomas for wrongly double tacking the one merk worth of land called the Barmark belonging to them by a tack made to them by John Campbell. The Lords of Council ordain that he be personally summoned to answer the charge and compear on April 15 next to come.

May 20, 1539: Exchequer account of the Steward in Kirkcudbright who will be answerable for �315 of the rent of the 100s. lands of Crogo of old extent with pertinents viz. 5 merkland lying within the parish of Balmaclellan and 2 merkland with half merk land lying in the Holm of Dalquhairn within the parish of Dalry and his Stewartry being in the hands of the King for the space of 21 years lately passed (by) reason (of word) which rents amount annually to �15 owed to the King by sasine granted to John Amuligane of the same. November 5, 1548: Exchequer account of the Steward of Kirkcudbright who will be answerable for �10 of the rent of the 5 merkland of Crogo being in the hands of the Queen for the space of one year last past the sasine not having been taken up and for �10 of relief of the lands and for �5 of rents of the 2 merkland with half merkland of Holm Dalquhairn of old extent together with their mills and fishings, lying in the parish of Balmaclellan and Dalry and within his Stewartry being in the hands of the Queen of the said period and for the above reason, and for �5 of relief of them; owed to the Queen by the sasine granted to John Amuligane, whose father died at Pinkiescleuch.

December 14, 1565: Charter by James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, to Alexander Sinclair in Earlstoun his heirs and assignees, for a certain sum of money of his one merkland of Todstone in the barony of Earlstoun paying the grantee �5. 10s feu ferme, with a precept directed to John Amilligane of Blakmyre as his baillie. Dated at Edinburgh and witnessed by Mr John Sandelands, rector of Hawick, Mr John Spens, burgess of Edinburgh, John Hepburn in Battoun and Andrew McMillan in Arndarroch.

[14] John Mullikin laird of Blakmyre
September, 1586: Testament dative of Patrick Hislop in Holm of Dalquhairn in the parish of Dalry who died September, 1586, given up by Beatrice Hislop his only daughter and Thomas McMichael elder in Blackcraig heirs executors dative by decreet of the Commissary of Edinburgh on 27 November 1588 There is the usual inventory of crops and stock valued at �204. 13s. 4d. There was owing to the defunct sums of money by Dungual McMichael in Lorgfoot, the deceased Edward Strit in Glencairn and Fergus McMillan in Arnderroch amounting in total to �38. The defunct owed sums to John Mullikin laird of Blakmyre, for his share of the mails in Holm amounting to �13. 6s. 8d.

[15] John Milligane in Blackmyre
October 10, 1592: Testament testamentar of John Porter in Strahanna in the parish of Dalry who died 14 October 1592, given up by George Gordon in Meikle Auchrae, Beatrice McMichael his spouse executor under his latter will made on 10 October in the presence of Fergus McMichael called Reid Fergus in Corlae, Andrew McCubben merchant in Graigengillan and John Porter his eldest son. There was owing to the defunct sums of money from a number of people including Thomas McMichael in Blackcraig, Donald McMillan in Knockengorroch, Roger Grierson in Bardennoch, John Milligane in Blakmyre, John Douglas in Killiewarren and George Gordon in Auchrae.

[17] Abraham Mullikin of Holm of Dalquhairn
July, 1602: Testament dative of Abraham Amuligane merchant in Holm of Dalquhairn within the parish of St. John in Dalry who died in July, 1602, and faithfully given up by James and Robert Amuligane his lawful brothers and executors dative surrogate to their deceased brother. His inventory listed cows pastured on the lands of Blackcraig and stock pastured on the lands of Dalquhairn and of Holm. The cautioner was Thomas Amuligane younger merchant burgess of Edinburgh and there was no division of goods.

October 13, 1607: Instrument of Sasine narrating that Thomas Gordon of Crogo in fulfilment of a charter dated at Arkland October 12, 1607, between himself and his father James Gordon of Crogo on the one part and Mr. John Douglas of Arkland his son John Douglas and his daughter Helen Douglas on the other, infeft the said Helen Douglas wife of the said Thomas Gordon for the 16s. 8d. land of his 33s. 4d. lands of Dalquhairn in the parish of Dalry, occupied by Andrew MacAdam. June 7, 1633: Instrument of Sasine following on a precept of Clare Constat dated May 30, from the King�s Chancery, after an inquest and retour, which stated that it was known (compertum est.) that James Mulligan now of Blakmyre was the heir of his father James Mulligan of Blakmyre of the five merkland of Craigok [Crogo] and two and a half merkland of Holm of Dalquhairn lying in the parishes of Balmaclellan and Dalry respectively, which he holds of the King as chief. These lands have been in the King�s hands for one term or thereabouts without sasine being taken up. 1637: Petition submitted to the Lords of Council by the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright against the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer into the Church of Scotland, records the names of five Milliganes who signed the petition and were elders of the presbytery of Dalry, namely, Robert Milligane in Bridgemark, Roger Milligane [in Craigengillan?], Robert Milligane in Holme of Dalquhairn, George McTurk in Holme of Dalquhairn, and James Milligane in Arndarroch and Roger Milligane in Arndarroch and John Milligane in Cairnmonow in the parish of Dalry.

[27] James Mullakane of Blakmyre
1645: Supplication given to the Estates of Parliament by the heritors of the four score merklands within the parishes of Kells and Dalry, which includes the names of James Gordon of Crogo and James Mullakane of Blakmyre heritable equally between them of the five merkland of Dalquhairn, requesting that a parish be erected to serve the parishioners within the four score merkland which the Estates by an act of Parliament erected and called the Kirk and parish of Carsphairn.

[28] Robert Muligane in Holm of Dalquhairn
August 10, 1660: Instrument of Sasine by James Gordon of Crogo with the consent of William Gordon his eldest son and apparent heir, gave the life rent from the 2 � merk lands of Holm of Dalquhairn in the parish of Carsphaim and stewartry of Kirkcudbright to James Gordon of Over Barre, and after his decease to his heirs and assignees. These lands were presently occupied by James Hunter and James McKmiehael, and consisted of the manor place, houses, biggings, yards, orchards, mosses, moors, meadows, tofts, crofts, mylnes, multures, woods, parts pendicles and pertinents. This was to be given without reversion. The witnesses to the sasine granting liferent were James Michael in Home of Dalquharne, Robert Muligane there. Hew McCall there and James Murdoch sheriff officer. Notary public James Gordon.

[29] James Mulligane of Blakmyre
February 19, 1662: Retour of Chancery in favour of James Mulligan of Blakmyre as heir to his grandfather, James Mulligan of Blakmyre, who had died in November 1656. It records that the two and half merkland of Holm of Dalquhairn was held immediately of the King for 50 shillings feu ferme yearly and that the land had therefore been in the King�s hand for the space of six years or thereabouts, by reason of non entry, for failure of the said James Mulligan of Blakmyre (younger) and his heirs, his right hitherto having been pursued to the smallest degree.

[38] John Millikin in Fernane, Ireland
May 24, 1673: Disposition narrating that John Millikin in the barony of Loughtee in Co. Cavan and Kingdom of Ireland, was the son and heir apparent of the late James Millikin of Blakmyre who died in faith and peace of our sovereign lord, possessed of the two and half merkland of Holm of Dalquhaim in the parish of Carsphaim and Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and the thirty shilling land of Blakmyre in the parish of Penpont and Stewartry of Nithsdale. Holm of Dalquhaim is described as having the usual items, such as houses etc., and also �orchyeards, dows, doucats, fishings and teinds'. And in consideration of a certain sum of money paid by Thomas Millikin merchant burgess of Ayr, equivalent to the value of the land, disponed irredeemably the land to Thomas, which he is to hold as freely as James Millikin, John�s father, did by bleach ferme of the superior for a penny Scot upon the ground of the said lands at Whitsunday, if it be required. Before Thomas can take possession of the land, John states that he will have to resign these lands into the hand of his superior for new infeftment to be made in favour of Thomas Millikin which he can then take to the baillie with a precept of sasine and constitutes as procurator or baillie for the grantor, James Blair, notary in Ayr. It is written by James Blair at Fernane [in the parish of Umey] in the barony of Loughtee in Co. Cavan, before John McNeal, seneschal in Fernane, and Mungo Futhy in Fernane. April 4, 1678: Tack dated at Clauchan of Dalry between Janet Carson, relict of deceased James Gordon of Barr, tutor to William, Charles and Agnes Gordon her children who have right �. and stand infeft in an annual rent to the principle sum of 3000 merks worth of the 20 shilling land of Glenshimmeroch lying within the parish of Dalry and for security whereof these lands are wadset to you on the one part, and Quintin Milligan in Craigengillan on the other par as follows:

The said Janet as tutor aforesaid has set in tack the maill and duties and lets to Quintin Milligan the 20 shilling land of Glenshimmeroch for 3 years from Whitsunday next to come 1678. Quintin Milligan binds and obliges himself to pay the maill and duties underwritten to the respective persons after mentioned viz.:

1. to Janet Carson for herself and in name of her said children �120.
Scots yearly at Whitsunday and Martinmas.
2. to John Mason, portioner of Inneresk �80 yearly for 3 years of tack.
3. to pay half the public burdens.
4. to the teinds of the Church.
5. to keep the house wind and water tight.
6. to put Janet and her family in possession after 3 years.

March 31, 1694: Instrument of Sasine in favour of John Gordon of Nether Holm of Dalquhairn by John Gordon resident in Edinburgh who compeared with William Kilpatrick brother to Thomas Kilpairick in Nether Holm of Dalquhairn as bailie in that part to John Hay of Alderstoun who was the son, heir and executor to the deceased Mr Thomas Hay one of the principal clerks of the Privy Council and Session, and also James Home of Geinelsheills. The said John Gordon had a gift of Recognition dated July 7, 1676, granted by the King with the advice and consent of the Lords of the Treasury in favour of the said James Home of Geinelsheill and his heirs heritably and irredeemably of the 2 � merk lands of old extent of Dalquhairn, etc. with pertinents in parish of Dairy and Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, which sometime pertained to ��[James] Gordon of Crago (sic) and was held of the King for service of ward and relief and then fallen into the King's hands and at his gift and disposition by reason of recognition conform to the law and practice of the kingdom, by - Gordon - his making and granting of letters of alienation and disposition of the same lands to some person whereupon infeftment followed without the King's consent and confirmation of the wards and nonentries, and they have been in the King's hands since the death of Gordon of Crago, by reason of ward and nonentries., and also the said John Gordon held a contract of agreement and disposition made and granted by the said John Hay of Alderstoune and James Home donator forsaid by the gift of recognition of the lands of Holm of Dalquhairn and others, in whose name the gift was taken for the security of the said late Mr Thomas Hay, to and in favour of the said John Gordon, to whom they both assigned these lands. John Gordon as assignee foresaid was infeft and seised in these lands. Witnesses to the sasine were John and James Clarke John Frissell tenants thereof. Luck Frissell eldest son to John Frissell. The sasine was registered on May 8, 1694.

[53] Quintin Mullikien in Glenshimmeroch
April 4, 1694: Instrument of Sasine reciting that Agnes Gordon, spouse of John Gordon resident in Edinburgh, lawful and only heir of provision to the deceased James Gordon of Barr procreated between himself and Janet Carson his spouse of the second marriage with a right of disposition in favour of Quintin Mulliken in Glenshimmeroch and Barbara McMillan his spouse and the longest liver of the two, of annual rent of �120 Scots money of the ordinary annual rent of the principal sum of 3000 merks Scots, to be taken at two terms in the year Whitsunday and Martinmas by equal portions worth of the town and lands of Glenshimmeroch in the parish of Dalry. The sasine was witnessed by William Harper son of John Harper in Blairoch, William Law resident in Edinburgh, William Sinclair, servitor to the said Quintin Mullican, Andrew McMoney, servitor to John McMillan, cordiner in Old Clauch.

[54] Quintin Milligan of Nether Holm
November 1695: Testament dative of Quintin Milligan of Holm, tenant in Glenshimmeroch, who died in November 1695 and was given up by Barbara McMillian relict of the said defunct for herself and in name of Margaret, Rossina, James, Janet, Robert and Agnes Milligan their children decerned executors dative. It was an agricultural inventory amounting to �1729. A Robert Grier in Knockgray and a William Milligan owed him �95. 13s. 4d. However, the outgoing debts exceeded the Inventory and debts coming in by �160. The cautioner was Robert McMillan brother to the relict.

April 14, 1698: Obligation by James and Roger McTurke in Upper Holm of Dalquhairn as principal and Robert Grierson, now in Glenshimmeroch, as cautioner, to pay to James Roane in Manquhill the sum of 300 merks and �50, with a terms annual rent, at Lammas 1698, with the ordinary annual rent and �50 of penalty. January 7, 1704: Instrument of Sasine in favour of Barbara McMillan, relict to the deceased Quintin Milligane of Nether Holm, following on a precept of sasine made between James Milligane eldest son to the deceased Quintin Milligane with the advice and consent of William McMillan in Nether Holm and the said Hugh McCaw his curators and the said Barbara Millan on the one and other parts dated February 12, 1702, whereby James Milligane gave an annual rent to Barbara McMillan of �40 Scots yearly from the lands of Nether Holm in the parish of Carsphairn, to be infeft in this by the deliverance of earth and stone and a penny Scots as use is. Precept dated at St. John�s Clauchan and witnessed by Gilbert Grierson, chamberlain to the Earl of Galloway, Robert McMillan in Grennan and John Williamson in Stewarton. In signing the precept, Barbara McMillan states she does not know how to write. The infeftment witnessed by William McMillan in Nether Holm, George McMillan in Nether Holm, Robert Williamson in Upper Holm and John Ramsay in Clauchan.

June 8, 1717: Instrument of Sasine of the Lands of Nether Holm of Dalquhairn in favour of Robert MacMillan, registered July 20, 1717, in General Register of Sasines. Compeared Robert McMillan in Craigmgillan and now in Nether Holm of Dalquhairn in the parish of Carsphairn and Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, and Quintin McCaddam baillie in that part specially constitute by Robert Milligan in Glenshimmeroch in the disposition with precept of sasine, on the ground of the said lands. There the said Robert McMillan holding a disposition of the said lands dated April 22, 1717, granted by the said Robert Milligan to him his heirs and assignees heritably and irredeemably, and whom the said Robert Milligan bound himself to infeft and sease by two several infeftments, and manner of holding, the one of the said Robert Milligan and his heirs therein specified and the other from him and them of the King's Majesty and his Royal successors immediate lawful superiors thereof,... to be holden either a me or de me in their option the one without prejudice of the other heritably and irredeemably without any from of redemption,... signed by me Robert Milligan at Furmiston on August 22, 1717.

[60] Quintin, James & Robert Mullikine
On 12th February 12, 1728: Instrument of Resignation of the Lands of Nether Holm of Dalquhairn in favour of Robert and David McMillan. It narrate that in presence of the Barons of his Majesty's Exchequer in North Britain convened in a full quorum in the new Session House of Edinburgh compeared Thomas Yudull an ordinary macer of the Exchequer as attorney for John Gordon residenter in Edinburgh and Agnes Gordon his spouse, by virtue of the procuratory of resignation and patent letters contained in a Disposition of the lands and others underwritten granted by the said John Gordon and his spouse to and in favour of Quintin Mullikine of Glenshimroch and his heirs and assignees dated April 15, 1695, and registered in the Books of Council and Session on May 1, 1695, and judicially ratified by November 30, 1696. To which Disposition and Procuratory of Resignation and Lands therein contained Robert MacMillan late in Craigengillan now of Nether Holm hath right as follows by Decreet of Adjudication thereof led before the Lords of Council and Session at the instance of the deceased William McMillan late in Marscalloch thereafter in Holm of Dalquhairn against James Mullikine of Holm as eldest son and as lawfully charged locutor heir in general and special to the said Quintin Mullikine for payment of the accumulate sum of �1923 Scots money dated February 23, 1712, and recorded October 20 thereafter. *Whereunto Margaret McMillan spouse to George Hewatson in Buss had right as any child of heir in general served and retoured to the deceased William McMillan conform to her General Retour dated March 17, 1717,* and from whom and her said husband for his interest, the said Robert Mullikine in Glenshimroch had right conform to a Disposition from them to him thereof wherein he is designed of Holm, dated April 22, 1717. And sicklike by another Decreet of Adjudication thereof led at the instance of Robert McMillan in Grennan before the said Lords against James Mullikine eldest son of and as lawfully charged to enter heir in special to the said Quintine Mullikine his father for payment of the accumulate sum of �4062?* Scots money dated January 23, 1712, years and duly recorded. Disponed by the said Robert McMillan to the said Robert Mullikine by Disposition, wherein he is designed of Nether Holm, and lawful son and heir to the said Quintin, and brother and heir to the said James Mullikin, dated November 10, 1716. And the whole premises were transmitted and made over by the said Robert Mullikine, not only as having right in manner foresaid, but likewise as heir in general served and retoured to his said father conform to his General Retour dated November 4, 1716, to and in favour of the said Robert McMillan now of Nether Holm and his heirs and assignees heritably and irredeemably conform to a Disposition thereof dated April 22, 1717, as in the several writs and evidents at more length is contained. And these the said Thomas Yudall procurator foresaid having and holding the disposition above narrated containing the procuratory of Resignation and other writs forsaid, � by staff and baton as use is resigned the 2 l/2 merk lands of Nether Holm of Dalquhairn of old extent etc.... in the parish of Dalry and Carsphairn and Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, together with all right title and interest which the said John Gordon or his spouse or their predecessors had to these lands, in the hands of Mathew Lant Lord Chief Baron of his Majestie's said Exchequer as in his Majestie's own hands himself immediate lawfull Superior thereof. In favour and for new infeftment made... by his Majesty to the said Robert McMillan, and failing of him by decease to David McMillan his eldest lawfull son, heritably and irredeemably, to be held of his Majesty as specified in the Disposition. Thomas Yudall as procurator and attorney for and in name and behalf of the said Robert and David McMillan received the staff and baton. Witnessed by James Callender Deputy Presenter of the Signatures in the Court of the Exchequer and John McDougall clerk in the Auditor's Office.
