Major James MILLIKEN of MILLIKEN, b. 1669, at Knock, Ayrshire, eldest son of Thomas MILLIKEN in Knock and latterly Lochranza, Island of Arran; adm. Burgess and Guild brother of Irvine, Ayrshire, on 12 August, 1692; first mentioned on the Island of Nevis, West Indies, in 1700; m. Mary Stephen, widow of Richard Tovey, planter of Nevis; appointed Councillor of Nevis in 1707, then Councillor of St. Kitts in 1715; received patent for 200 acres of land in the French Quarter of Basseterre, St. Kitts, on 8 May, 1716; returned to Scotland with Col. William MacDowall, his son-in-law, in 1728; adm. Burgess and Guild brother of Glasgow on 27 August, 1730; partner and founder of the South Sugar House in Glasgow; purchased part of the Johnstone estate from George Houston, in 1733, and renamed it the barony of Milliken, as Mr. Houston chose to retain the title of Johnstone; d. 5 February, 1741, aged 71 years; his widow died 12 September, 1746; they had issue:

  1. Anne MILLIKEN, b. Island of Nevis, West Indies, mentioned in the last will and testament of her maternal grandmother, Margaret Tovey of Nevis, dated 19 April, 1715; probably died in St. Kitts; nothing more is known.

  2. James MILLIKEN, Esq. of MILLIKEN, b. 1710, Island of Nevis, West Indies; succeeded his father, see hereafter.

  3. Parnell MILLIKEN, b. Island of Nevis, West Indies, mentioned in the last will and testament of her maternal grandmother Margaret Tovey of Nevis, 19 dated April, 1715; d. November, 1728, buried High Kirk of Glasgow, on 13 November, 1728, styled Miss Parlan Millikine, daughter of Major Millikine, Governor in St. Christopher.

  4. Francis MILLIKEN, b. Island of Nevis, West Indies, mentioned in the last will and testament of his maternal grandmother, Margaret Tovey of Nevis, dated 19 April, 1715; apparently died young in the West Indies.

James MILLIKEN, Esq. of MILLIKEN, b. 1710, Island of Nevis, West Indies; m. 21 April, 1734, Jean MacDowall, only daughter of Alexander MacDowall 16th of Garthland and Jean Fergusson daughter of Sir John Fergusson of Kilkerran, 1sr baronet; Jean MacDowall was the niece of Col. William MacDowall of St. Kitts and latterly Castlesemple; succeeded to his father estates in Scotland and St. Kitts in the West Indies in 1741; partner in the South Sugar House in Glasgow; made large improvements to Milliken estate; d. 7 June, 1776; had issue:

  1. James MILLIKEN, b. 17 August, 1742, at Milliken; matriculated University of Glasgow in 1754, art dealer in Florence, Italy, in 1762; d. unmarried, 9 April, 1763, buried at the Old Protestant Cemetery near San Niccolo Del Lido in Venice, Italy.

  2. Alexander MILLIKEN, b. 17 January, 1744, at Milliken, matriculated University of Glasgow in 1754; d. unmarried, October 1765 in Paris, France.

  3. Jean MacDowall MILLIKEN, b. at Milliken, m. 10 July, 1764, at Milliken, William NAPIER of Culcreuch, Stirlingshire (was under age at his father�s death in 1735), son of John Napier and Margaret Lennox of Culcreuch; husband died April 1773. Col. Napier was descended from Robert Napier of Culcreuch, third son of John Napier of Merchistoun (1550-1617), the celebrated Scottish mathematician and inventor of logarithms. Served heir to her father in 1779, died leaving issue:

    1. Col. Robert John MILLIKEN-NAPIER, b. 7 May, 1765, at Milliken; was named after Col. Napier�s friend and relation Lieutenant General Napier of the twelfth regiment of foot; had issue, see below.

    2. Janet McDowall NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 12 February, 1771; m. 12 August, 1790, Capt. William Augustus Kellett (b. 9 January, 1765, d. 6 November, 1822); had issue amongst others:

      1. Richard Kellett, b. at Milliken, 5 July, 1792; M.D., at Fort St. George, in the East Indies.
      2. William Napier Kellett, b. at Milliken, 2 December, 1793.
      3. Augustus Henry Kellet, b. at Milliken, 4 November, 1794, bapt. at Kilbarchan 8 November, 1794; Captain in Royal Navy; d. 1828.
      4. Robert John Napier Kellett, b. at Milliken, 15 January, 1797; m. Jemima Hunter at St. Andrews parish church, Edinburgh, 4 December, 1823; attained Captaincy in the 42nd (Royal Highlanders) Regiment of Foot; retired 19 October, 1838; d. at Florence 2 November, 1853. His wife d. at Florence 5 September 1854, and was buried with her husband in the "English Cemetery" in Florence. Jemima Hunter was the only daughter of James Hunter Esq. of Paisley, Renfrewshire.
      5. Susan Kellett, b. at Milliken, 15 July, 1798.
      6. Jane Napier Kellett, Drummond Place, Edinburgh; m. on 27 December, 1827 to Charles Fleming Hunter, Esq., merchant of Calcutta, who resided in Duke Street, both St. Mary's parish, Edinburgh. Charles Hunter was the son of Patrick Hunter and Rebecca Fleming of Hunterston, Ayrshire, and grandson son of David Hunter and Marion Milliken, daugthter of Hugh Milliken, merchant of Port Glasgow and a cousin of James Milliken of Milliken.

  4. Mary MILLIKEN, b. at Milliken; m. Dr. Nathaniel SPENS, physician in Edinburgh, son of Thomas Spens, 15th Baron of Lathallan and Janet Douglas, daughter of Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet. Nathaniel purchased the estate of Craigsanquhar, Fife, in 1792, was President of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh 1794-96, President of Council, Royal College of Archers (King's Body Guard for Scotland) 1809, member from 1750, Adj-Gen. 1810, (his portrait, painted for Royal College by Sir Henry Raeburn, now hangs in Archer's Hall), matriculated arms at Lyon Office, 1764, and died 21 June, 1815. Mary died on March 3, 1774 at Drumdryan House in Edinburgh, leaving issue:

    1. James SPENS, b. 1761; m. 1stly, Isabella Elizabeth McLEOD, daughter of John MacLeod of MacLeod, and 2ndly, Frances STUART, daughter of Sir John Stuart, Baronet of Allanton, and 3rdly, Elizabeth Joanna DAVIDSON, daughter of John Davidson of Revilrig and died 1840, leaving issue.
    2. Thomas SPENS, born 1763; MD, FRCP (Edinburgh), Brig. Royal College of Archers; m. Bethia WOOD, daughter of Andrew Wood, MD in Edinburgh and died 1842, leaving issue.
    3. Grahame SPENS, died unmarried.
    4. Nathaniel SPENS, Capt of the Neptune East Indiaman, visited Sweden ante 1800, died in 1801, unmarried.
    5. Janet SPENS, died 16 April, 1777, unmarried.

Col. Robert John MILLIKEN-NAPIER of Culcreuch and Milliken, assumed the name Milliken in compliance with his maternal grandfather's will; b. 7 May, 1765, sold Culcreuch in 1778; entered the British Army a year later and remained in active service for nearly twenty two years. He served in India, he commanded the siege of Mangalore, East Indies; in Holland; in Ireland; and in the West Indies. He was obliged to retire from actual service in 1802 due to severe wounds received in battle, and at the time of his death in February 1808, was in point of seniority, the second Colonel in the army; m.13 August, 1786, Anne CAMPBELL, daughter of Robert Campbell, Esq. of Downie Castle, Argyllshire. She out lived her husband and at the time of her death in 1850, she lived at Drummond Place, Edinburgh. Sir Robert had three known children:

  1. Jane McDowall NAPIER, b., at Castleston in the Isle of Man on 26 June, 1787.
  2. Sir William John MILLIKEN-NAPIER, b. only son, 18 June, 1788, hereafter.
  3. Mary McDowall NAPIER, b. at Milliken on 18 October, 1789.
  4. Robert Boyd NAPIER, b. at Wexford, Ireland, on 27 September 1792. Died young.

Sir William John MILLIKEN-NAPIER, b. 18 June, 1788, at Mullingar, West Meath, Ireland; became a pupil of Thomas Campbell the poet who lived for a time as tutor to Robert Napier of Downie Castle (as boy of about eight years, the future Sir William lived at Dounie with his mother, while his father was away in India); m. 11 November, 1815, Elizabeth Christian STIRLING, fifth and youngest daughter of John Stirling and Mary Graham of Kippendavie, Perthshire. William was served heir to his father in 1810 and on 17 March, 1818, heir-male general to Archibald Napier, 3rd Baron NAPIER, and became, 8th Baronet of Napier (a title dormant 134 years). He was Convener of Renfrewshire, and died 4 February, 1852. His widow died 3 March, 1860. Sir William was succeeded by his eldest son:

  1. Mary NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 7 April, 1817; m. 6 June, 1839, Robert SPEIRS of Burnbrae, Renfrewshire, and Culdees Castle, Perthshire, at Kilbarchan Parish Church; Mary died in 1902, her husband died 18 February, 1853. They had issue:

    1. Robert Thomas NAPIER of Burnbrae and Blackstoun, Renfrewshire, and Culdees, Perthshire; b. 15 October, 1841; educated Eton and Oxford; m. 2 June, 1868, Emily GIFFORD, 3rd daughter of 2nd Baron Gifford; JP for Renfrewshire and Perth, and matriculated arms at Lyon Office, 1859. He died 3 April, 1922, and his widow, 28 June, 1926. They had issues.
    2. Elizabeth Christian Stirling NAPIER; m. 10 October, 1867, Archibald Campbell DOUGLAS of Mains, Dumbartonshire. She died 1 March, 1905, he died 23 June, 1925. They had issue.

  2. Sir Robert John MILLIKEN-NAPIER, 9th Baronet of Napier; b. 7 November, 1818, at Milliken; succeeded his father, see hereafter.

  3. John Stirling NAPIER, b. 1 May, 1820; m. 4 March, 1845, Janet BROWN, only child of Andrew Brown of Auchintorlie, Renfrewshire. He died 17 April, 1891, and his widow, October 1913, leaving issue:

    1. John Stirling NAPIER, b. 22 June, 1856; m. 17 September, 1902, Caroline Charlotte Maitland (b. 2 August, 1868), daughter of Col. Keith Ramsay Maitland; served Lt-Col Res. of Officer and Major in Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders; d. 5 August, 1913, Stirlingshire.
    2. Mary Elizabeth NAPIER, m. 9 June, 1902, Capt Charles Lisle STIRLING-COOKSTON of Renton House, Grants House, Berwickshire; d. 29 April, 1925.

Sir Robert John MILLIKEN-NAPIER, 9th Baronet of Napier; b. 7 November, 1818, at Milliken; m. 4 April, 1850, at Pitfour Castle, Perthshire, Anne Salisbury Meliora Ladeveze ADLERCRON, only daughter of John Ladeveze Adlercron, Esq., of Moyglare, County Meath, Ireland; served Lieut-Col. of Renfrewhire Militia, Convener of that county in 1859, and Hon. Col. 4th Battalion, the Princes Louise�s Sutherland and Argyll Highlanders. He died 4 December, 1884. His widow died 5 January, 1902. They had issue.

  1. William John NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 6 November, 1850, baptized the same day, died a few hours later.
  2. Theodora Elizabeth Christian NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 6 November, 1850, baptized the same day, died a few hours later.
  3. Anne Salisbury Mary Meliora NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 30 December, 1851; m. 10 March, 1881, Sir John Adam HAY, 9th Baronet. She died 4 May, 1895, her husband, 13 May, 1941, left issue.
  4. Aymee Elizabeth Georgian NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 15 December, 1853; m. Sir George Douglas CLERK, 8th baronet of Penicuik. Her husband died 30 November, 1911, she died 8 May, 1947, left issue.
  5. William John NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 4 November, 1854; died infant.
  6. Robert James NAPIER, b. at Milliken, 4 November, 1854; died young.
  7. Sir Archibald Lennox MILLIKEN-NAPEIR, 10th Baronet of Napier., b. at Moray Place, Edinbrugh, 2 November, 1855; succeeded his father, see hereafter.
  8. Robert Francis Ladeveze NAPIER; b. at Milliken, 3 December, 1856; m. 25 July, 1887, Emily Norrie MOKE, daughter of George Louis Augustus Moke of New York; served Major QO Cameron Highlanders, 4th Col. Medjidie, and died from wounds received at Atbara, Egypt, on 23 May, 1898. His widow died 17 April, 1961, left issue.
  9. William Edward Stirling NAPIER, b. at Naples, 2 May, 1858; m. 12 April, 1884, Janet Catherine REID, daughter of W. M. Reid; d. 20 September, 1900, on the Island of St. Kitts, left issue.

Sir Archibald Lennox MILLIKEN-NAPEIR, 10th Baronet of Napier., b. at Moray Place, Edinbrugh, 2 November, 1855; m.1stly, Mary Alison Dorothy FAIRBAIRN, youngest daughter of Sir Thomas Fairbairn, 2nd Baronet of Ardwick, and 2ndly, Charlotte Lousie AUSTIN, only daughter of Hon. Henry William Austin of Montreal, Canada; he was sometime Lieutenant in Grenadier Guards, and died 18 January, 1907, leaving two sons, Alexander Lennox NAPIER, 11th baronet of Napier, and Robert Archibald NAPIER.
