Remembering Cody Card

Cody McCoy Card-Hershberger

Cody McCoy Card-Hershberger lived his life in and among the hearts of this Humboldt Community for just over 21 short years. He met his final moment in this world in a tragic accident in the rainy early morning hours of December 1, 2010 on highway 101 in Eureka, California. Cody is finally at peace after his too short and emotionally tumultuous life.

Cody attended Lafayette Elementary School in Eureka, briefly attended Zane Middle School, and spent his remaining academic years in Humboldt County Community Schools.

He was civic minded and had a strong sense of justice. He volunteered in the community for Ink People Center for the Arts, Vector Rehabilitation, Angels of Hope and North Coast Resource Center. He enjoyed his first employment at Fire and Light, went on to work in the California Conservation Corps and had left that program just weeks before his death. He had found employment with a local medical marijuana organization and was also looking into becoming a forest fire fighter.

He was in the moments of his young life where everything is possible. Known by us all as an emotionally intense boy becoming a man, we will all so fondly remember his forthright manner, the sound of his laughter, and the intensity with which he applied himself to everything, from menial tasks to love for his family and friends.

Cody was born on September 24, 1989, at General Hospital in Eureka, California and lived his entire life in and around the Humboldt Bay Area. He was truly a child of this community, loved by so many, and was proud to call himself a native Humboldt County man. Cody is survived by his mother with whom he lived most of his life, Lois Cordova of Eureka, and his beloved step-father Ed Cordova, his estranged biological father Carl Lyle Hershberger Jr. of McKinleyville; four sisters, Jessica Reeves and Tessie Hershberger of McKinleyville, Joelene and Jenna Card of Eureka, two nephews and two nieces that he adored, paternal grandparents Carl and Geta Hershberger, formerly of Fieldbrook now of Greenwood Arkansas, maternal grandmother Jonna Lee Card of Berkeley, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. A memorial service will be held in his honor Tuesday December 7, 2010 at Sunny Brae Church 555 Bayside Road Sunny Brae at 10:00 AM. Pot Luck reception to follow. There will be a memorial altar. Please bring pictures or items to memorialize and honor Cody. Memorial donations can be made to Sunny Brae Church in Cody's name. Funds not spent on final expenses will be donated in his memory to Angels of Hope.
