1860
The decade following this census record is a tumultuous time, for the nation, the small community in which the Mauk family resided, and for the family. Less than one year after this census was recorded the first shots were fired heralding the beginning of the Civil War. Great differences of opinion were heard among the George Mauk householders. It is not known if the political differences were any issue in the pending divorce of George and Elizabeth. It is spoken in family oral history that these differences were among those that led son Benjamin to remove so far from home, and to change the spelling of his name. This is the last record of this family somewhat in tact.
