Our Mauk Family
Elvin Dean Mauk September 2005
I dedicate this Mauk Family History page to my dear friend and cousin (third cousin three times removed) Elvin Dean Mauk 1929-2006. Elvin has been instrumental in untangling several of the Mauk Family History Mysteries. Elvin was son of Ollie and Edna Piercy Mauk, grandson of Zachariah and Mollie Bowles Mauk, great grandson of John and Mildred Nichols Mauk, great great grandson of George and Elizabeth Shipley Mauk. We miss you Elvin!
We have traced our Mauk ancestry with utter certainty to George Mauk and his wife, Elizabeth Shipley, and his apparently common law wife Eliza Sartain. Some controversy remained, until recently, among family members, for some do not believe George would have left a lawful marriage to Elizabeth to cohabitate with the younger Eliza. No marriage record has yet been located for George to Eliza. However, recently an extensive divorce record was located in Barren County. In 1865 Elizabeth Shipley Mauk petitioned the Circuit Court for divorce from George, and was awarded property, land, and divorce, rare in the year 1865. The 1870 census for Barren Co Ky shows Elizabeth and many of their children and grandchildren residing under a single family roof. Meanwhile, as shown on the 1870 Mitchell County Kansas census, George had by then removed to Mitchell Co., Ks with Eliza Sartain, taking with him his son Jesse and Jesse's bride Susan Perkins from Barren Co., Ky. George and Eliza stated to all in Kansas they were married in Barren Co., Ky, although after diligent searching in Barren and surrounding counties no marriage record has yet been located. Elizabeth Shipley Mauk lived on in Barren County. Her death date remains unknown. George fathered four more children with Eliza, and some of their descendants remain in the Mitchell Co., Ks area to this day.
Many descendants of George and Elizabeth Shipley Mauk and Eliza Sartain Mauk have collaborated to bring together the family information and documentary evidence presented here. If you are related to these families, if you have any additions or corrections, please let us know. We do not have information for all descendant families and many gaps in our knowledge remain. We'd love more eyes and ears to help us fill in the details of our Mauk family history. This is our Mauk Family as we understand it today.
***Current Research Question (and probable resolution thereof)***
We have recently placed Zachariah Mauk, youngest known son of John S. Mauk and Mildred Nichols, as the Zachariah Mauk that married Mollie Belle Bowls. After examination of a photo of Zachariah and Mollie Belle at the time of their marriage
(see Mauk photo pages) provided for us by grandson Elvin Mauk, showing Zachariah to be clearly a young man (not the elderly gentleman Zachariah son of George and Elizabeth would have been at this time), and after a better look at the birth record of Ollie Barton Mauk showing Zachariah to be 25 in 1897, we can fairly certainly presume at this juncture in time that this Zachariah Endemon Mauk is in truth the youngest son of John and Mildred Nichols Mauk and NOT Zachaiah H.C. youngest son of George and Elizabeth Shipley Mauk as previously thought.
***Current Research Question***
Another question has been brought up with examination of the depositions given in the divorce petition between Elizabeth Shipley and George Mauk. Depositions were taken from two George W. Mauks. While one is clearly identified as a son of Elizabeth and George, the other is not recorded as to what his relation may be. Who is George W. Mauk #2?
