Note: Finally, a record for a divorce between Elizabeth Shipley Mauk and George Mauk has surfaced. While this set of documents
answers some long standing research questions, new questions arise. See the Depositions for mention of two
George W. Mauks, one a son of George and Elizabeth Shipley Mauk, the other identified only by name, with no
relationship mentioned. This is interesting reading, for the family history aspect and that this set of documents finally
tells us that Elizabeth and George did indeed divorce prior to George's removal to Kansas, but also for the purely
historical nature, in that divorce was not common in the mid-19th century. Also fascinating is the property award as it
enumerates divided household goods and gives an 1865 price tag for many general household items.
