{The Dawes Commission was organized in 1893 to accept applications for tribal enrollment between 1899 and 1907 (some were added as late as 1914), mostly from Indians who resided in the Indian Territory which later became the State of Oklahoma. Tribal membership entitled qualified individuals to land allotments from the U.S. Government. These enrollment records were eventually published as the Dawes Commission, also known as The Five Civilized Tribes, which consisted of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Crow, Creek and Seminole Tribes.}

MARTIN V. YORK and 1 child Mena, Ark. Rejected. It does not appear that any ancestor was ever enrolled or that any ancestor was party to the treaties of 1835-6 and 1846. Shows no connection with the Eastern Cherokees; ancestors did not live in the Cherokee domain. Misc. Test. P. 2085 and 2291. Misc.Test.P. 2085. #2332 - also #40992 - Susan A Lake...in behalf of Martin V. York. "That I am 74 years of age and live in Webb City, Mo. I have filed apllication myself (40992). I am the aunt of Martin V York. His father was my full brother. His mother was a white woman. His wife is a white woman. His grandmother, Elizabeth York nee Kitchens, claimed the Indian. I think that my great grandparents were full bloods. My mother never talked much to me about our Indian ancestry and as far as we know, my mother claimed to be 1/4 Cherokee. My mother was born and raised in Kentucky. My mother was about 75 when she died in 1867. My mother lived in Ky. a long time and then she went to Illinois. I was born in Illinois. They had been there a long time when I was born. I was the youngest child of five. My mother nor I never lived with the Indians. Don't know my grandmother's name. She married a Kitchens but I don't know her first nor her maiden name. Don't know when she died. I think my grandfather Kitchen's name was John. He never had any other name than Kitchens. My mother had one brother and one sister. Charlie Kitchens and Rachel Kitchens. Rachel married John Wyatt. My mother was always called an Indian. She looked just like an Indian. I am recognized as a white woman. I never lived with the Indians myself. My great grandfather lived and died in N.C., even at the time the Indians were driven out. My great grandfather and my grandfather were both dead before I was born. None of us were never on any rolls that I know of. I nor my mother never received anything from the government. This is the only application I ever made for Indian benefits. All of my relatives claim through the same source as I do for their Indian descent. My husband was a white man". Signed: Susan A. Lake, Mena, Aug. 20, 1908

MISC. TEST. P. 2291. 43628-40992 - John J Bales: "My name is John J. Bales. I live at Sarcoxie, Mo,. I was born in 1846 in Polk Co., Ark. I claim through my mother. Her maiden name was Elizabeth York. She was born in Morgan Co., Illinois. She died in 1856 and she was about 28 years old when she died. I think she moved from Illinois to La. from La. to Ark. and from Ark back to Ill. They never lived anywhere else as I know of. My mother never lived with the Indians as a member of the tribe. I am nephew of Susan A Lake #40992." Signed: John J Boles(?), Carthage, Mo. Aug. 26, 1908. EXCEPTION CASE. Rejected. Total number of exceptions filed in this group Original recommendation renewed.

Be suspicious of very "white" sounding names in the period from 1825 to the Civil War. Names like George Washington Green, Andrew Jackson Matheny, Isaac Newton Ward, William Jennings Bryon Bollinger. If you want your children to appear white, give them a name everyone will know is"white", people will think you so admired that man that you couldn't resist naming a child after him. Serves two purposes. Of course, there were people who did so admire someone, but it is more likely to be an attempt to protect a child.

CHEROKEE INDIAN ANCESTRY

About 200 years ago the Cherokee Indians were one tribe, or "Indian Nation" that lived in the southeast part of what is now the United States. During the 1830's and 1840's, the period covered by the Indian Removal Act, many Cherokees were moved west to a territory that is now the State of Oklahoma. A number remained in the southeast and gathered in North Carolina where they purchased land and continued to live. Others went into the Appalachian Mountains to escape being moved west and many of their descendants may still live there now. Today, individuals of Cherokee ancestry fall into the following categories:
(1) Living persons who were listed on the final rolls of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma (Dawes Commission Rolls) that were approved and descendants of these persons. These final rolls were closed in 1907.
(2) Individuals enrolled as members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina and their descendants who are eligible for enrollment with the Band.
(3) Persons on the list of members identified by a resolution dated April 19, 1949, and certified by the Superintendent of the Five Civilized Tribes Agency and their descendants who are eligible for enrollment with the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indian of Oklahoma.
(4) All other persons of Cherokee Indian ancestry.

OKLAHOMA OSAGE TRIBE ROLL, 1921
By the Act of Congress on 28 June 1906, (34 Stat. L., 539-543), the lands of the
Osage Nation in what is now Osage County, Oklahoma were divided among the 2229
members of the tribe. Each member received an allotment of 657 acres of surface rights.
This database is a census of the tribe conducted in 1908 and
certified by the Osage Indian Agency in 1921. In addition to providing the tribe
member's name, each record also includes birth information, sex, and relationship to the
head of the household. Commission number refers to the number assigned by the
1921 certification commission. Roll number refers to the number assigned in the
original Roll of 1908. Affidavit numbers are provided for those who applied for
proof of Indian blood and to what degree. This index reveals information
regarding over 2,300 Osage Nation members in the early twentieth century. For
researchers of Osage Tribe members, this can be an invaluable source of information.
Source Information: Sparks, Lyla Hayes. "Oklahoma Osage Tribe Roll, 1921."
