Family history tells that Arthur came home on furlough from his unit in the Confederate  Army.  When he arrived home he discovered all the children had the measles. 

On his return trip he fell ill with the measles in the swamps of Louisiana and died.  His traveling companions wrapped him in a blanket and buried him on the spot.

ALSUP, Pvt. J. J.- Company B, 4th Missouri Infantry, 4th Regiment formed in April 1862,

 with men from Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, and surrounding area.

On October 19, 1862, two flat cars crowded with Confederate soldiers were demolished in a terrible train wreck near Duck Hill. The soldiers, wrapped in their blankets, were buried in a long common grave.
