1774 John Alsop member of militia of the Virginia frontier.

1782 John Alsop, assignee of Thomas Copeley, assignee of James Havens, received a Commissioner's Certificate for 400 a. on West side of New River in Buckeye Bottom.

1790? John Alsup, assignee of Thomas Copely, assignee of James Heaven, assignee of Thomas Burk, assignee of John Young rec. 400 a. on West side of New River in Buckeye Bottom to incl. 90 a. surveyed in 1775, settled in 1774.

In 1803, Seth and Elizabeth Caldwell sold their 365 acres to three different individuals, a portion of that land was sold to John Grant. The deed states the location of the land as being near Buckeye mountain, on the Bear Springs, next to the survey for John Alsup. So again, we have evidence for the close physical proximity for these two families.

This is where it is confusing. Benjamin was now a ward of the people. This may be representing the

original purchase on Mechumps Creek. However, it looks like he could not work the land.

I believe this Thomas Alsup was a son of Benjamin & Susannah. The reason is because, Thomas, the son of William would have been in his late teens or early 20’s. A man with credit would most likely be closer to 30.

Benjamin Alsup still owned property in 1745. Was anyone working it? Was it just laying fallow? Are one or more of his sons working the land?

Probably not, because another Alsup name should have shown up in the processioning. Ben had sons, Joseph, b: 1705, and most likely Thomas.

Neither one mentioned as helping Benjamin.

8 Oct 1745  St Pauls   Judgement against JOSEPH ALSUP for concealing tithables, in Mr Jennings hands

Joseph had to be a son of Benjamin. Joseph had at least two sons over 16.   1745 minus 18 equals 1727. Subtract at least

21 years from this, and we get an approximate birth date for Joseph as 1705-1706. With this birth date, Joseph could

NOT have been a son of William jr, who was confirmed as born in 1690. William jr was 15 years old when Joseph was

born.

Figure two sons born about 1727.

(This may be a typo, as it may have been meant to be “Alsup Yarbrough. Notice first and last names mentioned except Alsup & Yarbrough)

(John Lawrence, in his will in 1778, named Alsup Yarbrough as a land owner living next to his property.)

This confirms that Wm Alsup and Alsup Yarborough were neighbors

================================

Based on the above data so far, Benjamin Alsup lived in a different district than William and William jr.

(The land processioning was Wm & Wm jr in No 3, and Ben in District No 10. James Hooper was in District No. 1.)

Ben lived at the head of Mechumps creek. Ben had to be taken in as poor.

Ben might possibly have been Benjamin jr.

William sr was a head of the community. He was a “Sexton”. Wm also signed land processioning orders.

Why William did not help Benjamin can only be speculation. Maybe they did not get along.

Maybe Ben was a son of the other Benjamin, making Ben jr a nephew of William.

Maybe Ben, for some reason, was not liked. The timeline shows that Ben was afflicted, either physically or mentally.

Even his sons did not help him.

Sherry,

Your website is terrific.  I heard about you from your Mom. We use to correspond eons ago!

At one time I thought Joseph Perrin was the father of our John Perrin. He isn't. I've been working on the Perrin line for more years than I care to remember. I've tried everyway I know how to connect John to Joseph. But it just isn't there. I "believe" the father of our John Perrin was Henry Perrin. No solid proof! I think it goes like this:

Henry Perrin was the father of Isaac Perrin b. c 1736, John b. c 1738 and Joseph b. c 1740. I'm sure there were others but these 3 are fairly certain. This Joseph was the one who ended up in Georgia. Henry, I believe, was a brother of the Joseph Perrin who md. Rebecca.

Mary Lou Bailey's Research
Although this has not been proven, it is the best possible scenario thus far as to who the father of John Perrin is. The dates fit, location, etc.

I enter this information here more for the purpose of research than actual fact. This is for my benefit only and not to be taken as fact.
I believe this work of Mary Lou is the most factual and realistic of any other I've seen. I give her full credit for this information.

Henry Perrin of Hanover County is a contemporary and is possibly a brother of the Joseph Perrin who was born about 1700 at Hanover County and later settled at Lunenburg/Charlotte Counties. Henry named a son, born in 1740, Joseph Perrin.

Henry may have lived in Henrico County before settling in Hanover County. His son, Joseph Perrin, sold land in Henrico County on 20 June 1771, stating it was land he had received from his father, Henry Perrin.

In 1771, Henry Perrin had land processioned in Hanover County, in a district which included land of John Bowe, deceased, Pulliam's orphans, and others of the Bowe and Ragland surnames, the same families who had been neighbors to Samuel Perrin and to the Joseph Perrin, later of Charlotte County, 1715-1740.

About 1781-1783 Henry Perrin of Hanover County made a claim for public service in the Rev. War.  A Henry Perrin ( b.1710,d.1782) is listed on the tax lists at Hanover Co.,Va. between 1782 and 1815. The early entries perhaps apply to this Henry, and the later ones to Henry, son of Isaac, who first appears in 1784 under his father, Isaac Perrin.

A census of Va. taken in 1782 listed Henry Perrin ( b.1710, d 1782) living at Hanover County. He was the head of a family of 3 whites and 3 blacks.

Children of Henry Perrin are speculated to include:
John Perrin b. c 1738, Isaac Perrin b. c 1736, and Joseph Perrin b. c 1740.

1790 Census Hanover Co.,Va. St. Paul's Parish lists Henry Perren...3 free white males 16 & up, and 3 blacks.

The
1810 Census for Hanover Co. lists a Henry Perrin on p.60

1796, Alsup, John, John sr, Joseph, William, William jr (personal)  All listed with 1 male

William jr was born in 1764. He had to be a son of William sr. Therefore, William sr was born before

1805 Alsup, William   personal

1810 Alsup, William   Tax List   2 0 5.

This does not compute. His oldest son, John was 12 years old. Who was the other male over 16?

1799 Lee Co, Little William Alsup bought 129 acres that cornered with Big William's land.

Joseph as a brother, and both the sons of William sr. However, it conflicts with Joseph being

JOHN ALSOP. Will made 3 Feb 1802; rec. 27 Jan 1806.  Exr. Son John, Wife Mary.

Looks like John Alsop died before Jan 1806.  The Orange Co, VA census was lost for 1810.

John jr enumerated 1820 & 1830, Orange Co., b: bet 1770- 1775. He had no male issue per enumerations.

Marriage: ALSOP, Fanny & William McFARLAND, 6 Jan 1808, Orange Co. VA

Witn. Danl Cokely and John Cokely. Bonds Danl Cokely son of John [Cokely or McFarling?].

Fanny was not named in the will.

Reuben George married Mildred Rogers ca 1756 in Caroline Co, VA. Though he lived in Caroline Co, VA, Reuben appeared with his brothers in Pittsylvania Co, VA in several court records, though I'm quite sure he never lived there.

On 30 Nov 1770, in Pittsylvania court, Robert Williams, assignee of Thomas Allsup, sued John George and Reuben George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 262).

WASHINGTON COUNTY, VA

1782, Treasury Warrant Number 14129, Samuel Allsup, Washington County, VA;

In 1833, John Shelton of Scott County, Virginia sold twenty-five acres of land to David Wininger of Scott County,

Virginia.  This land was originally claimed by Samuel Allsup in the Treasury Warrant Number

14129 on September 6, 1782 in what was then Washington County, Virginia.  On May 19, 1814, twenty-

five acres of the original Allsup claim was assigned and granted to Solomon Potter.

This twenty-five acres was located on Opossum Creek, a branch of the north fork of the Holstein River.

Apparently, John Shelton acquired this land after 1814 and eventually sold it to David Wininger in 1833.

According to History of Jackson County, Alabama, John Shelton came from Virginia to Maynards Cove in 1830.

Since John Shelton of Scott County, Virginia sold land in 1833 in Scott County, Virginia,

he probably moved to Jackson County, Alabama in 1833.

According to the Family Bible, John and Catherine Shelton were the parents of ten children.

ALSOP, Joseph, age 9 next Oct 30th.
Apprenticed to Michl Madera, stone mason

MDHR 12291   Vol 6M2 P. 102.

There obviously is a connection here.

First, I cannot find this orphaned Joseph Alsop anywhere else in any future documents.

I believe I know who his father was, (Joseph Alsop) who died after Revolution hostilities ceased, during a barge explosion in July 1783 in Maryland.

Second, The stonemason listed above, (Michl Madera) age wise, makes me suspicion he could have been a son

of Nicholas Madeira.

I am researching the William Alsup/Alsop family who were in the area of Mechumps Creek in the early 1700's. He sold a 3 acre plot to the Vestry of St. Paul's Parish June 16, 1729 on which they built Slash Church. Alsup had a 400 acre land grant in this area. I am trying to see if anyone might have some information regarding the Alsup/Alsop family. My family was invited to attend a dedication of a Historic Highway Marker in October 4, 1998 which we attended. We also were invited to a 275th anniversary of the Church in 2004 which we could not attend. Dianne Jones the church historian has been quite helpful in my research. Any info about the family would be appreciated. Pat Alsup Hardman    [email protected]

PENNSYLVANIA

Hi Dave,
Thanks for asking. The first I find
John Alsop (born bef 1758) was being taxed and applying for a tavern license in Newberry Township, York County in between 1779-1783.

------------------
Also, 1779-1782, York Co, Newberry twp,
John Alsop taxed each year on 200 acres

----------------------

He is not listed there after those dates.
I find a John Alsop in the Paradise & Berwick Township of  York County. His Captain in the Revolutionary War is Capt. Ickes/Fickes who lived in Paradise Township.

The next I see a
John Alsop is in the 1790 census in was later Columbia Borough (Hempfield Township) Lancaster County. He is not taxed there, which may mean he was not a resident there.
There is an Alsop who married George Carrouthers of Hempfield Township in 1809.
This all the information I have on John Alsop.

There were Alsips in Franklin County, PA, who I think moved there from Maryland, but no John Alsops.
Thanks for your interest & help in John Alsop.

-----------------

I am not related to either the Carrothers or Alsop families. I am doing some historical research, and I ran across a marriage of a George Carrothers and an Emilia Alsop in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1809.
