Charles ALLEN (1819 - 1898)

Charles was born at Richmond on the 5th March, 1819, and duly baptised at the Church of St. Peter, at the age of fifteen years on the 14/9/1834 with four of his younger brothers and sisters. He was the eldest son, and second child of Edward Allen, a convict who had arrived on the "Fortune" in 1806 and Sarah Cooling/Coulan, his wife, who had been born in the Colony of convict parents.

On the 24th January 1843, which would appear to have been his parent's 29th Wedding Anniversary, Charles married Elizabeth Taylor at St. Peter's Richmond, the witnesses being John and Eleanor Davis. Eleanor was Charles' first cousin through his Mother, Sarah Cooling.

Elizabeth Taylor had been born 16th April, 1826 at Richmond and was the daughter of Robert Taylor, a convict who had arrived on the "Somersetshire" in 1814 and of Sarah Harrison who had been born in the Colony.

Charles and Elizabeth had a Family of thirteen children, eleven of whom survived to adulthood -- Matilda 19/12/1843, Sarah Ann 2/9/1845, Eliza Jane 26/9/1847, Emma 4/8/1849, Mary Ann 6/9/1851, Thomas George 22/10/1853, Betsy 1857, Alice Maude 1859, Maria 1862, Charles William 1864, Roland Taylor 1866, Harold Oscar 1869 (died aged 14 months) and one daughter who died as an infant.

Charles Allen farmed at North Richmond on a farm of about 26 acres and his homestead was known as "Hilly Cottage". Charles Allen passed away 16/9/1898 and was buried at St. Phillip's North Richmond. Elizabeth, his wife passed away 15/6/1900, and although she had a short Obituary in the Gazette, her daughter, Sarah Ezzy, was not mentioned by name, although Sarah was not the only member of the Family omitted from this account. Elizabeth was buried alongside her husband in St. Phillip's Cemetery in a coffin of polished cedar which was covered with beautiful wreaths. The service was conducted by the Rev. Gray.

Edward ALLEN (1779c - 1865)

Edward Allen arrived in the Colony as a convict on the "Fortune" in 1806. Edward had been tried at Warwick in 1803 and was transported for a term of 7 years.

Edward married Sarah Cooling (various spellings) at St. Matthew's Windsor on 24/1/1814 and witnesses were Robert Clarklane and Margaret Watts.

Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Cooling, a convict who had arrived on the "Pitt" in 1792 and his convict 'wife' Nellie Brian (Eleanor O'Brian and other variations) who had arrived on the "Sugar Cane" in 1793. Sarah was born on 30/6/1796 but was not baptised until more than a year later.

Edward and Sarah had a Family of eight children, seven of whom survived to adulthood -- Margaret 1/3/1816, Charles 5/3/1819, Isaac 25/3/1822, Edward 26/12/1828, Maria 14/5/1831, Eliza 25/2/1834 and Sarah 1837c.

Margaret was baptised at St. Peter's Richmond at the age of about two years, before the younger children were born. Charles, Isaac, Edward, Maria and Eliza were baptised together at the same church in 1834, although for Maria this was a second baptism as she was also baptised alone in 1831 when she was one month old.

Edward and Sarah lived first at North Richmond, until in the year 1822, Edward received a Grant of 50 acres on 1st November at Myrtle Creek (now Tahmoor). He later sold this land to his Father-in-law, Thomas Cooling in December 1824 for the sum of fifteen pounds ($30). As there is a gap in the spacing of Edward's children during this period of time it is possible that Sarah had remained in the Hawkesbury district whilst her husband was working his land at Myrtle Creek. This statement is, of course, purely speculative.

At the time of the 1828 Census, Edward was back living and farming at Richmond where he had 7 &: 1/2 acres all of which was cleared and under cultivation.

Eliza died at the age of 7 years and was buried at St. Peter's churchyard. Although Margaret had married in 1835 to William Brown a convict who had arrived on the "Minerva" in 1824 and was at the time of his marriage an employee of Joseph Onus, she is known to have predeceased her parents. Isaac, who possibly did not marry, is also known to have died before his parents and is thought to have died at Broulie in 1862. The other members of the Family outlived Edward and Sarah.

Sarah Allen passed away 12/10/1865 and was buried in the churchyard with her daughter Eliza. Edward followed her to the churchyard only six weeks later when he died on 28/11/1865. At time of death, Edward was said to have been 86 years of age, however this may not be correct, as based on his age as given in the 1828 Census, he was only about 82.
