Our ancestor was John HISSEY christened on 10 Nov 1699 in Beedon, Berkshire, England to William HYSSIE aka HISSEY and his wife Mary (nee HARRIS) who married in Beedon, Berkshire, England on 10 Feb 1693. His father William was christened on 24 Mar 1671 in Beedon, Berkshire, England to John and Mary.

Our ancestor was NOT John (4th) HISSEY who was christened on 20 Jul 1701 in Longworth, Berkshire, England. This John (1701) is NOT the ancestor of William EZZEY who was transported to Australia as widely reported incorrectly both on the IGI (LDS Mormon records) and elsewhere.

Our John (chr 1699) and Mary had three children, all christened in Hampstead Norris, Berkshire, England. Mary HYSSIE (1724), John HYSSIE (1726) and William HIZZY (1734) our direct ancestor who married Mary GOLDING.

Although I have now proven that John chr 1701 was NOT our ancestor, his information and ancestral lines are still included in these pages for the benefit of other researchers, including many of his descendants whom I am in contact with who would welcome contact with other researchers and whom I am only too happy to refer other researchers or descendants to.

Stanford in the Vale is a large village which lies on the A417, four miles from Faringdon and six from Wantage.
This rather whimsical village name is easily explained away. Stanford in the Vale is thought to be named after a stone ford in the area. It may have been a crossing of the River Ock, some say where the bridge now spans the river before Stanford Mill, however others speculate it was actually a crossing of Frogmore Brook. Stanford is a stone ford over the little River Ock and 'the Vale' obviously refers to the northern plain over which can be seen the famous prancing white horse, cut into the chalky hillside.

Longworth is south west from Oxford. From Longworth about a mile away is Hinton Waldrist, both parishes. Stanford in the Vale, it's about 6 miles from Longworth.

Ian Charles HISSEY's page state John and Mary (ALLIN) had at least 4 children. Their only son John(5th), was born in 1701 and when his father died in 1726, aged 68, he was left an Inn known as the Sign of the Lamb, and two fields adjoining called the Stone Pitt ground and the Barn Ground together with all houses and outhouses pertaining to them. The girls Mary and Elizabeth were left £I00 each. His other daughter Ann who had married John Spanwick had already had her 'portion'... The next John Hissey(5th), only son of John and Mary, married Mary Allin (sister of his good friend Richard Allin) on I9th February 1740, at Magdelin College Chapel, Oxford. The Allins were quite a prosperous family who lived at Iffley on the outskirts of Oxford. Their line can be traced back to Richard Allin of HarwelI who died in I6I0. This John and Mary also had at least 4 children, 3 boys, the eldest called John(6th) as usual, and a daughter.

Father John(5th) died in 1766, aged 65, leaving to his son John(6th) the Stone Pitt and the Barn Grounds of around 7 acres each, an orchard and 2 other 'grounds' of pasture and a number of tythes in Draycott Moor which he had held by leave of St. John the Baptist College of Oxford. His second son, Richard received 42 acres and Jonathon who was not yet 2I was left his
Copyhold Estate and £I00. Daughter Elizabeth received £200.

Possible alternative death date of 1766 (source Joanne Goodsell's file received from Anthony Hussey. Original source being Mrs. L. Ashton). Marriage date of 19th Feb 1740 given by Mrs. L. Ashton.

John and Mary had at least 4 children. His other daughter Ann who had married John Spanwick had already had her 'portion'.

To his "beloved wife Mary" who survived him, he left an annuity of £I2/I0/- , his best bedstead, two pairs of sheets, pewter dishes, two tableclothes and napkins, one table and four chairs, and a few other bits and pieces. It is nice to know that while the male Hisseys' seemed to have owned everything, they believed in a fair share for the females in the family.

This John and Mary (all these John and Marys are quite a headache), also had at least 4 children, 3 boys, the eldest called John(6th) as usual, and a daughter.

His second son, Richard received 42 acres and Jonathon who was not yet 2I was left his Copyhold Estate and £I00. Daughter Elizabeth received £200.

His wife Mary, who does not seem to have been treated quite so generously as her mother-in-law was 40 years before, was to have £5 a year. Mary, in fact, returned to Iffley and took her daughter Elizabeth with her. Mary died 3 years later in 1769 and Elizabeth married William Pike in 1774.

John(6th), born at Longworth in 1743, married May Langham at Longworth in August 1767. Mary was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Langham. John Langham's father was Morris Langham and that is how the name Maurice (Morris) came into the family.

This John and Mary were a little more prolific and had seven children, including, (you have guessed it) an eldest son called John(7th). But this time our ancestor is not, John, but their second son Maurice, who was born in Longworth in 1775. When Maurice's father John(6th) died on 04/05/1794, aged 51, John(7th) as the eldest son inherited the bulk of his Estate, and Maurice and his other brothers were left £400 each, and the girls were left £300 to be invested for them until they reached the age of 2I.

His 'dear wife Mary' was left all his stock of cattle, corn, hay, implements of husbandry, monies, securities, goods and chattels and personal estate. Mary survived her husband John by 30 years, dieing in I824.

As Maurice does not seem to have inherited any property in Longworth from his father he used his inheritance to rent a farm at West Hanney. He married Jemima Palmer at Wantage on 10/12/I80I and their first three children, two girls and their eldest son, our ancestor Charles (b 11/09/1804) were all christened at West Hanney. In 1807 they then moved on to Buttermere in Wiltshire where another three sons were born. Buttermere is a quiet little agricultural hamlet, in a tree shaded valley on top of the downs.

The I838 Wiltshire Tithe Apportionments lists Maurice Hissey as occupying 550 acres, probable bought from James Lockhart, who was the largest landowner in the parish of Buttermere. JEMIMA died on 05-11-1838 at the age of 65yrs, and Elizabeth took over the running of her father's house, remaining a spinster. Charlotte married John Simpson Perrett, a son of John and Sylvia Perrett on 23-9-1834. They had at least one child, a daughter named Sophia was born in 1837, with possibly three other children.

Alfred married Ann and their son Alfred, born 1847 and Christened 21-01-1848 at Hungerford, married Mary Deborah Richen on 14-11-1876 at Hungerford. The family was then living and farming at Standen Manor. Thomas married Ann Elizabeth and lived at Wantage in Berkshire. A family of four children was born to them, Anne b 1844, Clara b 1846, William Henry b 1 848 and Thomas Palmer b 1 849. Henry did not marry.

When Maurice died on 09-07-1847, he left a long and rather complicated will, leaving £500 to his friends Robert Palmer, a brewer of Wantage, and Henry James Palmer, grocer of Wantage, (probably Jemima's brothers) to be invested in their names but the dividends were for Charlotte Perrett for her use exclusively. She was also to receive the bed, bedding and furniture in the room in which he then occupied.

Thomas received a legacy of £100 in addition to the £500 given to him earlier, while Elizabeth was to receive £500 plus the bed, bedding and furniture in the room in which she occupied. Robert and Henry Palmer were to oversee the division of the farm between Alfred, CHARLES, & Henry but as Charles was living in South Australia by then, the farm went to Henry. In the 1851 census of Wiltshire, he was listed as head of the household and farmer of 550 acres, employing 11men, 5 boys and 4 women.

In 1889, a letter arrived in S.A. addressed to Mr Thomas Hissey of Barossa, near Gawler, from a Mr. Slade, stating the death of Henry Hissey on 25-06-1889 at Wokingham in Berkshire. Henry had made his nephew Alfred one of his executors and bequeathed what little he had left to be shared equally between all his nieces and nephews. The freehold property had been heavily mortgaged and was in the hands of the Mortgagee. Considerable portions of the land had been sold and the writer was unsure if Henry still had an interest in the property at the time of his death.

The little Church in Buttermere where Maurice and Jemima are buried, is on the original farm that Maurice owned, only 400 metres down from their house. It is still in use, but because no power is connected, the services can only be held during daylight hours in summer. Behind the altar is a beautiful stained glass window erected by Henry in 1855, in memory of his parents, Jemima, who died in 1838, and Maurice, who died in 1847.

On the 27th February in 1840 Charles Hissey, aged 35, and the son of a yeoman farmer, married Emily Mills, aged I9, the daughter of a labourer from the village of Ham, just down the hill from Buttermere. Emily was one of a large family, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Mills, who came originally from the village of Little Bedwyn. Charles and Emily set sail for South Australia, just a few weeks later, together with Emily's Father, Mother and family.

The search is now on to find out why Charles left England altogether, as he was the eldest son, and in Maurice's will was to be left the farm of 550 acres. Reading Maurice's will is very interesting, he allowed for everyone, Thomas, Henry and Alfred the farm implements, Elizabeth and Charlotte had £400 each invested for them plus sundry household items.

BLEWBURY : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~villages/berks/blewbury.htm
The Icknield Way runs from East Anglia to the Salisbury Plain and where it cuts across the A417 road on the Berkshire Downs, is where the lovely village of Blewbury is found. A sensible visitor would park the car and walk as Blewbury has grown up round a network of streams and footpaths within four encircling roads. You should allow time to wander as this would be the only way to see the real village comprising ancient thatched walls, old houses, orchards and waterways. The great battle of Ashdown was fought by King Alfred near Lowbury Hill at the junction of the Blewbury, Aston Tirrold and Compton boundaries in an an area referred to in the Domesday Book as 'The Hundred of the Naked Thorn'. In Saxon times
Grim's Dyke was dug across the down parallel to the Ridgeway. Local folklore has it that the devil ploughed it in one night and created two large mounds with his plough scrapings and the clod thrown at his imp because it drove a crooked furrow. A plaque at Chum Nob records that St. Birinus preached to the heathen from this spot in 634 A.D.

The village had several inns worth visiting. The Blewbury Inn, renamed the 'King William' and now known as The New Inn, once had a sinister reputation which gives a whole new meaning to the fertiliser blood and bone! Apparently travellers were robbed, murdered and buried in the orchard and a new fruit tree was planted on each grave. Then there was the cheekily named 'The Load of Mischief' and the traditionally named 'Red Lion'.

The Vicar of Blewbury from 1781 to 1824, a Welshman aptly called Morgan Jones was known as 'Blewbury Jones the Miser'. His coat had been patched until not even a shred of the original remained. His other clothes were generally borrowed from scarecrows and he always visited his parishioners at mealtimes where he was naturally invited to partake of the food. When he died back in Wales, he left an estate of £18,000, a large sum for the the early 19th century. He was the inspiration for 'Blackberry Jones', the character created by Charles Dickens in 'Our Mutual Friend'. Blewbury has always attracted artists and writers. Luke Fildes, Blandford Fletcher and T.F.M. Sheard all painted characters from the village. Novelists Dick Francis, Marguerite Steen, G.B. Stem and Barbara Euphen Todd have been residents and Kenneth Graham of 'Wind in the Willows' fame lived here for some years. A modem housing estate was even named after his much-loved story. Steve Donaghue once trained horses in Blewbury and the famous Ribero is one of many winners who have worked out on the gallops above the village.

Parish of Aberlour.(County of Banff.)By the Rev. Mr James Thomson.
http://www.abdn.net/genuki/BAN/Aberlour/RevThomson.html
The ancient name of this parish was Skirdustan, so called from its tutelary saint, Dustan. Its modern name is Aberlour, derived from its local situation; being situated at the mouth of a noisy burn, where it discharges itself into the Spey. It lies in the western part of the county of Banff, about 20 computed miles W. of the county-town, 10 S. of Elgin, and 12 S. E. of Forres. It gives name to the presbytery to which it belongs, being the presbytery-seat; and pertains to the Synod of Murray. The figure of the parish resembles a wedge, being broader at the west end, and growing gradually narrower towards the E. Its length from E. to W. is about 6 Scotch miles; its breadth from S. to N. at the west end, about 5 Scotch miles; about the middle, between 2 and 3, but at the east end it will not exceed an English mile. It is bounded on the S. and S.E. by the parish of Boharm, from which it is divided by a small river called Fiddich; on the N. by the parish of Rothes, from which it is separated by the river Spey; on the N.W. by the parish of Knockandow, from which it is also separated by the river Spey; and on the W. and S. W. by the parish of Inveraven, from which it is divided by a hill called the Drum of Carron, the small water of Tarvey, and the hill of Allachoynachan, upon which the battle between the Earls of Argyle and Huntly, commonly called the battle of Glenlivat, was fought. The appearance of the parish is various; that part of it which lies N.W. N. and E. and runs along Spey and Fiddich, is flat; that which lies towards the S.E. and S.W. is hilly. In the middle of the parish stands the high mountain of Belrinnes, from the top of which you can, in a clear day, see as far S. as the Grampian hills, and as far N. and E. as the mountains of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness.

348. William COLLIE was born about 1720 in possibly Tullochgrue, Rothiemurchus (parish of Duthil and Rothiemurchus) Inverness-shire, Scotland.

I have commenced corresponding with a cousin who lives in Rouen, Normandy in France. He wrote that he used to spend the summer holidays at his grandparents house in Insh near Rothiemurchus, so he remembers the place quite well.

He is descended from our Collie ancestors from William Collie's son Allan Collie (b ca 1750, d ca 1829) who married
Anne Stuart (b ca 1761, d ca 1841) "Anna mhor" (gaelic for "big Anne"), son Alexander Collie (b 1786) Kinrara na coille,
d 1867 Tullochgrue(Rothiemurchus) "An Collaich mhor" (the big Collie) married Christian Macpherson (ca 1817), son Alexander Collie (b 1834) Tullochgrue, d 1912 Tullochgrue married Isabella Bell 1872, son Alexander Collie (b 1877) Tullochgrue,d 1936 Insh married Grace Jane Maclauchlan 1909 Aviemore, son Alexander Andrew Collie (b 1912) New Stevenston (near Glasgow), our cousin's grandfather, d 1988 Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.

He wrote that his grandfather did a lot of research on the Collies and that a couple from Australia, Alex and Elsie Collie,
came to visit him in the 1980s.They were also looking for Collie ancestors from Rothiemurchus and Alex was a descendant
of Robert Collie 1804-1886, son of Allan Collie and Anne Stuart. They wrote a book using all the data they had collected titled "COLLIE FAMILY HISTORY". National Library of Australia card number and ISBN 0 646 05057 5.
Printed by Lutheran Publishing House 205 Halifax Street, Adelaide, South Australia 5000 0875/91.

William Collie does not seem to have come from Rothiemurchus. They may have come from further north up the river Spey. The 1740s were a period of unrest and Culloden lies not very far away north of Duthil, so the effects of the Hanoverian repression must have been felt in the area.

In Jan 2005 Ian GARROW advised 'reading a book by a William Collie, famed deerstalker in Rothiemurcus, and grandson of Allan Collie. In this he says that Allan & his brother Alexander left Focabers, quote in the prime of their life unquote, to settle in Rothiemurcus. I wonder then if they were born on Speyside and not Rothiemurchus

William had 3 children at least:
1. Mary COLLIE married Charles CLARK:
children=John b 1776, Helen b 1780, ?b 1784 Loch an eilean, Alexander b 1788, Janet b 1791 Ord Bàn.
2. Alexander COLLIE
3. Allan COLLIE, our direct ancestor born about 1750, married Anne STUART 1780 Kinrara, died ca 1829.
(his wife received a small sum of money from the church from that time).

Translation of gaelic place names around Rothiemurchus(from a 1954 leaflet-the translations are perhaps not all correct):
-Allt Druidh:the burn of the druid or magician
-Aviemore:"agaidh mor" the great slope
-carn eilrig:the cairn of the deer-walk
-coylumbridge:bridge of the narrow leap
-lairig ghru:possibly "the forbidding or gloomy path"
-cairngorm:the blue cairn
-river luineag:the surging river
-rothiemurchus:ràth a mhor ghiuthais "the plain of the great pines"
-am beanaidh:the burn of corners(beannach)(as in Bennieside)
-Insh:from gaelic "innis" (island).

Extract from My Father's Old Musket 'Culloden' (from 'Memoirs of William Collie' his grand-nephew in Canada (William 1829-1910, son of Peter Collie b 1791and Mary Cameron) published his memoirs ("The memoirs of William Collie") ca 1900:)
It would appear that a member of the Collie family was attached to the regiment of the Clan McDonald at the Battle of Culloden. History records that through some misunderstanding with the Pretender, Prince Charles, the McDonalds did not take any part in the famous battle. After the rout of the Highlanders, young Collie carried the musket home with him to where he lived near Fochabers, and having no inclination for sport he gave the musket to my Grand Uncle, Alexander Collie, of Cragan au fhithich, just as the former was departing to visit friends in the lowlands of Scotland and apparently never claimed it again. He might have been a brother of Alexander Collie, but was always called the speckled Collie (An Colleach breachd). My Grand Uncle when on his deathbed gave the musket to my father, and it has been in my possession ever since his death in 1857.

372. possibly Edward ROBINSON was born about 1740 in possibly Hudswell, Yorkshire, England.

Possibly the father of our convict ancestor Edward ROBINSON who was transported to Australia. However, although his son Edward was originally thought to have been baptised 11 Nov 1754 to parents Edward and Mary ROBINSON. (This is recorded in both 'The Hawkesbury Pioneer Register', IGI and various sources). However, this would no longer appear to be correct, as he Edward Jnr (Abt 1754 - 6 Jun 1820) was living in the Leeds/Tadcaster/York area further south from at least 12 years of age. Refer to comments received from Sandra Smith in 2006 to whom I am most grateful to for her generosity in sharing her research. [Bolton Percy is a parish, 3.5 miles ESE. of Tadcaster]
