Amy Hedrick's Family Research

space

My earliest known Webb is George and his wife Nancy Rock.  According to census information George was born about 1803 and Nancy was born about 1807 and both were born in Virginia.  They were married 17 July 1826 in Giles County, Virginia and to this union at least 11 children were born.  One of which is my second great grandmother, Sarah Jane (Webb) Hedrick.

Recent research developments show that George was the son of George Webb and Jane Wilson, the grandson of John Webb & Elizabeth Snodgrass, and the great grandson of Julius Webb.  After finding the Civil War pension file of Henly Webb (George & Nancy's son), it became clear to me that the Webb family were the same ones from Craig and Giles County and that they traveled from there to Ohio and then landed in Grant County, Indiana with my Hedrick family and the Bane family (and probably a few other families).

By 1840, George and family are living in Marion, Grant, Indiana, and by 1860 they are no longer listed in the census, and all of the children are either married or living in other homes.  This lead me to believe that George and Nancy may have died before 1860.  The child named Andrew in the 1850 census was finally traced by me and through his Civil War pension file I now have an approximate date of death for George and NancyAndrew had to lie about his age in order to enlist, stating he was 18 years old in 1862 and giving a birth date of 19 February 1844 in Marion, Grant, Indiana.  He stated that his mother died when he was four years old and that his father died two years later.  If the 1844 birth date was correct, then Nancy should not have shown up in the 1850 census, but she did, so one can assume that Andrew really meant he was 4 years old when his mother died and since the census says he was born in 1847 we can surmise that Nancy died around 1851 and not 1848 and her husband George around 1853 in Marion, Grant, Indiana.

James A. Webb, was born about 1829 in Virginia according to census records.  After 1850 he is in Indiana living with his parents and siblings.  I can not find James after 1850 due to the fact that there are many James Webbs in this area.  He may have enlisted in the service during the Civil War in the 20th Infantry Regiment Indiana.  There were no marriage records or census records in Grant Co., Indiana for James.

Perry G. Webb, second possible son of George and Nancy, was born about 1832 in Virginia [census record].  I have found him and wife Mary E. Stebbens in the Indiana census for 1860 [Grant Co.] and 1880 [Howard Co.].  He too may have enlisted in the service during the Civil War.  I do not have a date of death.  He married on 26 November 1865 in Grant Co., Indiana and to this union at least three children were born:  William, Lucy, and Daniel Webb.  A death record for a Perry G. Webb is on file in Howard Co., Indiana with a death date of 19 July 1914.  This record states that he was born 1 January 1830 in Union Co., West Virginia and that his father's name was Robert Webb.  Either his family didn't know his father, or Perry is NOT a son of George & Nancy (Rock) Webb.  In the 1850 Grant Co., Indiana census is a woman named Ruth Webb who has many children, one named Robert.  It could be possible that Perry may have been a nephew of George & Nancy Webb.
All the information I have on him was gathered through census, and may be incorrect due to the information on the death certificate it may be that this is the Perry G. Webb who married Mary E. Stebbens, and not my ancestor.  However, no other Perry Webb was recorded in census records for Indiana.

Floyd H. Webb was born about 1835 in Virginia [census record].  He married Mary Matilda Jenkins on 28 September 1851 in Grant Co., Indiana.  A Floyd Webb with a wife Mary can be traced in the census, I will use this information, until further proof is found to disprove or prove his descendants.  According to the 1860 Howard Co., Indiana census he and Mary had four children:  Maria 7 years old; John 4; Isabella 2; and Oather 1 year.  An online tree shows the latter child to be Otho Louis Webb and that Floyd died in 1867 and Mary Matilda on 23 May 1898 in Howard County.  The 1870 Center, Howard, Indiana census confirms that Floyd did die before 1870, either that or he left, because Mary is now married to George W. McPherson and living with him and his daughter along with only three of her children; Isabella is not listed with the family, suggesting she either died or is living out.

Sarah Jane Webb is my great-great grandmother.  She was born 22 March 1834 in Virginia, and died 11 March 1905.  Supposedly she is buried in the Burson/Pulley Cemetery next to her parents George and Nancy Webb.  A burial record was found for Sarah, but not for her parents.  Sarah married Jacob J. Hedrick on 26 May 1857 in Huntington Co., Indiana.  This marriage date leads me to believe that her parents were dead by then.  Presumably, Sarah's aunt and uncle married into the Bane family, Jacob's first wife was Mary Bane whose siblings married Sarah Webb's aunt and uncle; however, I have not confirmed who her grandparents are in order to confirm that it was her aunt and uncle; however, these families traveled from Virginia to Ohio then to Indiana together.  Sarah and Jacob had 5 children:  William H., Andrew J., Clement V. [my great grandfather], John H., and Franklin B.  Much is unknown by me of these Hedrick boys.  Sarah's relationship to George & Nancy (Rock) Webb has been confirmed by a death record.

Henly Wesley Webb was born about 1837 in Ohio [census record].  In 1860 he was living in Grant County with his wife Susan Van Horn and daughter Nancy.  According to this census, Henly was a blacksmith.  In 1870 he is still in Grant County with his wife and children Adda, Edna, Harlen, and Edith.  In 1880 he is in Grant County with wife and children Edna, Harlen, Edith, and Rose.  It's possible that Nancy and Adda are the same child because the 1870 census says that Adda is 10 years old, making her the same age as Nancy; either that or they were twins.
At one time Henly may have been part of the Quaker Mississinewa Monthly Meeting of Grant County; according to the minutes of that meeting, Rosa, Adda, Edith, and their parents Henley and Susannah were accepted into membership in 1882 and 1884 to wit:  Adda on 02-08-1882; Rosa 03-08-1882; Henley & Susannah 03-08-1882; and Edith 01-09-1884.  I am using the numerical dates due to the fact that Quakers sometimes used the Old Calendar system and/or the English way of writing dates, so 03-08-1882 could be March 8, or August 3, or May 8, or October 3.  Not long after joining, they were dropped from the rolls:  Edith 11-11-1896; Henley, Susannah, Addie & Rosa 09-05-1900.
Now that so many new databases have come online, I have been able to locate better records.  If the family were Quakers, it's likely they weren't disowned, but possibly moved away.  A death record in Arizona for Edith (Webb) Devine, confirms her parents and that she died 12 June 1948 in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona.  Taking this information I was able to find her in the 1900 Wolf River, Doniphan, Kansas census with her husband George H. Devine and his mother Henrietta J. Devine Edith and George were married for 9 years by that time, he was from Kansas, and they had one child that died.  I decided to search for Edith's parents and they too are in Wolf River.  However, this census states that Susan was the mother of 5 children all living and in their household was a son named Alva born August 1876.  This son was not enumerated in 1880 with the family, not to mention he would make a sixth or seventh child.  Marriage records show Edith and George marrying 25 November 1890 and Edna and Alfred Showers on 17 April 1884, both in Doniphan County; Edna was also living in Wolf River just doors away from her parents.
This information opened up the door for me and I now know what happened to Henly (read more in his biography); he removed to Kansas where he died and was buried in Severance, Doniphan, Kansas in Oak Hill Cemetery with his wife and children Adda, Edna, Harlen, and Edith, along with some of their spouses and children.  Henly also filed for his Civil War Pension from Kansas and as of 23 June 2011, I am awaiting the documents.  Henly's death certificate has not been located yet.

George W[ashington?] Webb, Jr. was born about 1841 in Indiana [census record].  I have no further information on George.

Harriet Mira Webb was born about March 1841 in Indiana [census record].  On 25 November 1862 in Grant Co., Indiana she married Joel Jackson.  In 1860 Grant County census she is living in the Buller home as a domestic servant.  I did not find her in 1870, but in 1880 she is living with her husband, and in 1900 she is still in Grant County with her husband and a foster son, Harry W. Phillips.  According to her death record, Harriet was born 27 March 1842 and died in Grant Co., Indiana on 26 October 1918.  Her husband Joel was born 30 July 1831 and died 19 October 1903 in Grant Co., Indiana.   Harriet's relationship to George & Nancy (Rock) Webb has been confirmed by a death record.

Mary Ann Webb was born about 12 March 1844 in Indiana [cemetery record].  She married Bethuel Middleton on 1 November 1871 in Grant County.  To this union, and according to census records, 5 children were born, however, only 4 were found by me so far (the 1910 census says she was the mother of 5 with 4 living, but 1900 said all 5 were living):  Walter Martin, Anna, John, and Guy Middleton.  In 1860 Mary is living in the Joseph Shambaugh home as hired help, and right next door is her sister Martha.  In 1870 Mary is still living in the same home, but her sister is no longer listed next door.  By 1880 she is living with her husband and five children (two are her step children) and she can be found up to 1910 in Grant Co., Indiana.
Online cemetery records state that she died on 5 December 1927 and was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Grant County; I am currently awaiting death records for this family [4 April 2012].

Martha E. Webb was born about 1846 in Indiana [census record].  On 3 February 1876 in Grant County she married William Snyder.  In 1860 Martha is living in the Sam Campbell home and next door in the Shambaugh home is her sister Mary.  In 1870 Martha is living as a domestic servant in the Charles Bowman home.  By 1880 she is living with her husband William.  On 15 November 1905 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, Martha married a man named Enos Durst who was also married previously.  They were living in Wabash, Tippecanoe, Indiana during the 1910 census which says that he was born in Ohio and that she was the mother of two children with one living; they were living at the Indiana State Soldier's Home.  Enos was a Civil War Veteran who later removed California and was admitted to a veteran's home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California where he died in January of 1930.  His death date was recorded in a newspaper clipping found in an Ancestry.com database of historical items from U.S. newspapers; the day was cut off slightly but looks like it could be the 23rd or the 25th.  It is unknown by me if Martha went with him, but he was listed as widowed on his 1914 admission papers to the veteran's home and his daughter, Mrs. C.B. McBrayer, was his closest living relative in Sacramento, California.  Enos married again on 2 September 1914 in Elkhart County, Indiana to Sarah A. Brewer; which would suggest that Martha had died or separated from him by that time.
Enos appears to have been quite the marrying guy, there were several records indexed for Enos and according to census records he appears to have been the only man with this name.  He married Mary Howell on 15 March 1866 in St. Joseph County; Mary Ann Mairs on 18 August 1869 in Kosciusko County; Lydia Nyer on 25 November 1872 in Marshall County; Rosella D. Miller on 3 June 1893 in St. Joseph County; Martha E. (Webb) Snyder on 15 November 1905 in Tippecanoe County; Emma Bane on 25 September 1913 in Grant County; and Sarah A. Brewer on 2 September 1914 in Elkhart County.  However, a marriage announcement for his marriage to Sarah says that he was only married twice before her.  According to a marriage index online, his parents were Michael Durst and Sarah Webb who

Stephen A. Webb was born about 1846 in Indiana and in 1860 he was living with his brother Perry in Grant County.  I have no further information than this.

Andrew J. Webb was born about 1847 in Indiana [census record].  On 17 October 1867 in Grant Co., Indiana he married Melissa Lyons and had at least one child, George W. WebbAndrew may have been in the military during the Civil War.  There are many regiments with an Andrew Webb listed within.  In 1860 Andrew is living in the Sam Pulley home.  This may explain why his parents were buried in the Burson/Pulley Cemetery, they were neighbors.  Sam Pulley may have helped take care of the family after their parents' death, and kept Andrew in his home.  In 1870 Andrew is living in Grant County with his wife and son George W.  No further info is known about him by me.
Part of my search for this family involves searching out death records.  One death record exists in Indiana for an Andrew J. Webb who would be the right age.  Upon viewing this record though, this Andrew who died 2 August 1906 was the son of a Tillman Webb and Anna whose last name is illegible.  This family is in the 1850 census which eliminates this Andrew from being the one in the George Webb household.
In 1880 Miller, Marion, Missouri is the family of Andrew Webb (age 34) and wife Malissa (30), son George (10) and daughter Anna (8) all of Indiana.  Next door is a widowed woman named Mary Webb of Maryland who was listed as the sister-in-law of the head of household, William Williams; while I don't know if there is a relationship to Andrew, it just seems worth noting.  By 1900 Andrew had removed to South Dakota with a new wife named Captildia [census record] whom he married sometime around 1884; unfortunately, I do not know her maiden name nor exactly when or where they married.  However, he did have six more children with her, their births spanning from Missouri, Kansas, and finally South Dakota.
The last census record he appears in is the 1910 Lead, Lawrence, South Dakota record with his wife and four of their children.  Some of his children are still in Lawrence County in 1920 which would suggest that, if he did die, Andrew may have died there.  He did file for his Civil War pension from South Dakota, and upon inspecting this file, we can solve quite a few mysteries in Andrew's life.  Please visit his biography on this website for the rest of his story.

If you have any information on this Webb family while they were in Indiana, I would love to hear from you.  If you can help me sort out who George Webb's [1803] parents were, don't hesitate to email me!
