Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK)
For a long time I knew very little about my HARDY (Soundex code H630) ancestors, because my grandfather on this side of the family died before I was born. There used to be a Hardy Family Association in the USA, but I believe it became defunct in the 1990's. The association published a three volume series of books called The Hardy Family in America by John A. Hardy. Unfortunately I could not find my ancestors listed therein. If you are researching the Hardy family you may find a copy of these books at a library near you with a large genealogical section. Little by little I am digging up more information about my Hardy ancestors. We have listed some of our sources on the left side of this page as well as some links pertaining to this branch of our family.

I know very little about my 3rd great-grandfather, MAURICE HARDY. He was born in 1800, probably in Ireland. He married CATHERINE HEARN on February 29, 1824 in Stradbally cum Annexis, County Waterford , Ireland. I found a ship record which is a good match, so I believe he came to the US in 1848 with his family. His wife and two sons, MAURICE HARDY (see below) and WILLIAM HARDY (1837-1883), appear alone in the 1860 census. His wife is shown living with William and his family in the 1870 census. From this I conclude that Maurice probably died sometime between 1848 and 1860, however he is not buried with the rest of the family at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, USA. There were several other family members on the ship record, so perhaps he is buried with some of them? The family may have even lived in New York City before moving to Jersey City.
MAURICE HARDY    My 2nd great-grandfather, MAURICE HARDY, was born in about 1842 in Ireland. I believe he came to the US with his family in 1848. He married MARGARET BUTLER on February 27, 1865 at St Peter's Church (Roman Catholic) in Jersey City, Hudson County , New Jersey, USA. They had at least four children: RICHARD F HARDY (1866-1898), CATHARINE HARDY (1869-1901), MARY HARDY (b.1872-d.1873) and MARGARET IRENE HARDY (see below). They probably moved to New York City just before Margaret's birth. I found a Morris Hardy in the 1871 NYC Directory living at 166 Av. C in Manhattan. Maurice died in 1872 and is buried at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, USA. The State of New Jersey has no record of his death, so I suspect he died in New York, however New York State did not keep death records at that time.
On a side note, Maurice's wife, Margaret seems to have remarried after his death. The name on her death certificate reads "Margaret Landrigan". A William Landrigan was a witness at the marriage of Maurice to Margaret and could have been an old family friend.

MARGARET IRENE HARDY    My great-grandmother, MARGARET IRENE HARDY, was born in September 1870, in New York City. She married JOHN JOSEPH BURNS on April 23, 1899 at the Church of St John the Evangelist (Roman Catholic) in Manhattan, New York County , New York, USA. They had two children: JOHN RICHARD BURNS (1901-1969) and MARGARET IRENE BURNS (1903-1961). The family was living at 349 East 53rd St in the Sutton area of Manhattan in the 1900 US Federal census and also during the 1905 New York State census. They were living at 344 St Nicholas Ave in the Morningside Heights area of Manhattan during the 1920 US Federal census and at Margaret's death. Margaret died on October 26, 1923 of pulmonary tuberculosis in Manhattan, New York County , New York, USA. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens County , New York, USA.
