{The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, October 1992, page 319.}
On 1 December 1716 Peter PATEE, cordwainer, sold to his son, Richard PATEE, cordwainer, for L500 with a L300 mortgage, "Patee's Farm & Ferry," containing about twelve acres and including houses, barns, fencings, other erections, orchards, gardens, ferry boats, "ferry road excepted" (ibid., 32:56, 33:1). On 19 January 1719/20, Peter, by deed of gift, conveyed this property to his "eldest son" Richard, releasing him from the existing mortgage (ibid., 40:91). A new mortgage of L256 was created to be satisfied by Richard paying that sum, after Peter's decease, "unto such person or persons" as specified in Peter's will (ibid., 37:99).

Richard PATTEE was born before 1675, perhaps in Virginia, and he died intestate at Haverhill, Massachusetts between 14 September 1741 and 8 January 1741/2 (Essex Co. Deeds, 88:44; Essex Co. Probate File 20754). He married Susanna BEALE before 1715 (Haverhill TRs, 1:129 gives her maiden name, but no date of marriage). She died after 9 May 1743 (Essex Co. Probate File 20754). She may have been the mother of his first four children, for whom no birth records have been found, or he may have had a previous marriage.
