NOTES

Many thanks to James L. Senefeld for the following article
which appeared in The Hoosier Genealogist in 1988:

THE MARYLAND EXODUSTERS
IN FRANKLIN COUNTY, INDIANA

The term "Exodusters" was used somewhat derisively to describe
the influx of population into Franklin County and Blooming Grove
Township, Indiana in the period of the mid-1830's. (Note 1) An
eyewitness to the arrival of the people from Maryland who fit this
title wrote many years later that around 1834 "... a lot of exodusters
from Maryland swooped down upon the town and it began to grow." This
town was Blooming Grove, nearly twenty years old, but without a
meeting house. This was at least the second wave of migration from
Maryland because in the period just before statehood, a number of
families came to the area and by 1820 had a church at the south end
of the township, the Ebenezer Methodist Church as well as a small
town. Relatives of early settlers such as Thomas Slaughter and his
wife, Elizabeth Swift Slaughter, came until it has become impossible
to untangle the Swift relationships in the county. The poverty of the
area these families escaped is attested by Frederick Douglass in
his autobiography, My Bondage and My Freedom; he was born at the
time of the first migration to the Midwest and reached adulthood
at the time of the second.(Note 2)

There exists a letter in my mothers collection written by the
daughter of one of the pioneer exodusters of 1835 to my
greatgrandmother, Laura Swift Ferris in 1925. When in her eighties,
Miss Ada Bell responded to questions on family history. Her brother,
Sylvan Bell was born the year before the family's move and served
in the 37th Indiana. He died in 1873 and is buried in Fairfield,
Indiana. Her letter was written when she was no longer able to live
alone and gives some idea of the frustration she felt at this as
well as old age. My mother remembers her as a kindly woman, who on
a visit to her more than sixty years ago went to a tall, old
cupboard and reached far back in the top to give my mother a doll
brought back from Sylvan Bell's travels in the South during the war.
Her letter is given in full with details of her daily life and then
a short history of the migration by the group of families.
(Addressed to Mrs. Laura Ferris, Brookville, Indiana)

Blooming Grove, Ind.
Nov 21st 1925

Dear Laura:

Your letter of Oct. 29th received the next day. Have been
thinking every day I would answer it but I had to do some sewing
for myself, and I had company every Sunday since I've been here.
(I came Oct. 29.) and we have the door between our living rooms
open, so I could not write to do any good.

Well Laura, I have never thought of myself as living in anyone
else's home, but I thought it would be easier on me and cheaper
to board than I can keeping house and paying someone to help with
the work, and for them to only work half a day for me, and off a
whole day almost every week, besides sitting up way beyond my
bedtime waiting for them to come in four or five nights in a week.
Letta is truthful, honest and kind, but she could not go ahead
with the work. She is at Connersville and has been for two weeks.
I heard someone wanted her there. I guess we will have our sale
some time in Dec., but have not decided just when. I am going to
keep a good many things, so if I want to keep house I will have
them.

Thank you Laura for your kind words, and I hope I haven't visited
you for the last time, and I sure did enjoy myself the day I was
there, ate such a big dinner and have had such a good appetite since.
Now for the history far as I can remember it, your father's
grandmother, Emanuel and Elizabeth Swift with 6 girls and 3 boys,
leaving one married daughter in Maryland, my grandfather Chambers
and wife, my father and mother and three children, Uncle John
Chambers, mother, brother and his wife father's sister and 2 children,
Wm. Roberts a 16 yr. old boy and I think a family by the name of Dodd
came with them came from Maryland to Indiana, arrived in Sept 1835,
and of course they all settled near Blooming Grove. I have forgotten
whether there was any more or not. I am alone tonight and can write
without hindrance, and I promised Jennie Waggoner I would come
there tomorrow, Will wanted me to go to Emerson's with them. Ella &
Carl and his girl but I don't want to go. It is only five weeks
since I was there. Della Meyers and Grace Steinard are both very
poorly. Everyone else is alright, I guess. Mrs. Swan and Lucy Wilson,
and Lucy Swift were all out to see me this afternoon & evening, and
Mrs. McFall was in one day this week. Well good night. I'll read
a while, then go to bed.

M. Ada Bell

The William Roberts mentioned here was about eighteen at the
time and also settled south of Blooming Grove. Almost ten years
later, his younger brother, Clinton Roberts, his sister
Henrietta, and his parents came in a two-wheeled cart to
Franklin County, and Henrietta's grandson, Basil Copes of
Brookville, has told me that she said she walked most of the
way. Clinton was Laura Swift's grandfather. The Chambers family
had a number of descendants, including my grandmother's closest
friend, Mrs. Alva Chambers LaMont, (1891-1977) who was the
historian of Blooming Grove for many years.
