Genealogy of the "Kentucky River" Prestons

In 1789, one John Preston appears in the tax records of Lincoln County, Kentucky.  We suspect this John Preston is the common ancestor of our Preston lines in Central and South Central Kentucky.  The will of John Preston dated July 28, 1800 and proved March 1801 does not mention the names of all his children.  The only child's name mentioned in John Preston's will was his daughter, Jane, and Jane's son, William.  We do not know Jane or William's surname.  No wife was mentioned in John Preston's will.

Some [possible] children of this John Preston are Hannah, John m. Betsy, Jeremiah m. Mariah, Tabitha Jane m. Richard Barnes, Margaret m. Elijah Smith, William m. Ann Dove, Elizabeth m. Reuben Warren, Moses m. Sarah Pointer and Sarah Ott, Daniel m. Susannah Luttrell, Greenberry and Patrick.

Many of these Prestons migrated to other parts of the United States such as Tennessee, Iowa and Illinois.  However, John Preston who was married to a lady named Betsy stayed in the area and died in Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1823.  We don't know if Betsy was John Preston's  only wife or the mother of any or all of John's children.  The children of this John Preston who were still living during the 1850 census tended to list their places of birth as Virginia.  However, we have been unsuccessful in linking this Preston line to any of the Preston lines in Virginia. [see Family Trees for possible children of this John Preston]

DNA testing of known descendants of John Preston d. 1823 in Jessamine County, Kentucky  and a known descendant of Moses Preston from Eastern Kentucky suggests there is no close relationship between the two Preston lines.

Unfortunately, the Kentucky River Prestons did not leave a very good paper trail.  This makes it very difficult to trace the family through historical records.  While we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information found in this website, We hope it does prove useful in guiding your research of the "Kentucky River" Prestons.  We welcome corrections and additions.
