1.  ZACHARIAH NEWTON1 CARROLL was born February 1832 in Bedford, TN, and died June 01, 1905 in Estill Springs, Franklin, TN.  He married MARY JOSEPHINE KNIGHT September 07, 1865 in Franklin, TN.  She was born January 1836 in Franklin, TN, and died in Franklin, TN.

Zachariah applied for his pension on 31 Mar. 1903, #4834 and it was rejected.

 

He had not been wounded, but had an attack of acute rheumatism, the knee and ankle joints in both legs, at Tupelo, Mississippi. He stated that he was born in Bedford Co., Tennessee on 9 Feb. 1829. He was taken prisoner in a skirmish near Manchester in June 1863 and was not able to return. He had lived in Tennessee all of his life. The War Department on 26 Nov. 1906, stated that Z.N. CARROLL, 2st sergeant, enlisted 9 Dec. 1861 at Camp Trousdale, to serve 12 months. He reported on the roll for July and August, 1863. The prisoner-of-war records show that he was captured as a deserter 3 July 1863, at Tullahoma, Tennessee, and was released on taking an oath of allegiance to the Government of the United States on 9 July 1863.

 

Mary J. CARROLL'S widow's pension, #1085, filed 25 July 1906 and rejected on 8 Aug. 1906. She stated that she had lived in Franklin County all of her life, seventy years. She stated that her maiden name was Mary J. MILLER. She actually had been previously married to George Griffin MILLER and was a KNIGHT.
