He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Civil Engineering from the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in 1969.

Derrick married Patricia Anne Peel at St. Teresa's Church, Irlam, in the district of Barton (LAN) on xx xx 1969. The church was situated on the corner of the Astley and Liverpool Roads. The marriage was conducted according to the rites and ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church. Derrick was aged 22, a civil engineer and resident at 21G Tarbolton Road, Cumbernauld. His father Raymond Ardron was an engineer. Patricia was aged 25, a bank clerk and resident at 596 Liverpool Road, Irlam. Her father George Edward Peel was an optician. Witnesses were M. Shires and D.
