On the 1901 Census (31 March) he was aged 23, a coal miner trammer, living with his parents at 131 White Lee Road, Swinton. (PRO ref RG13 piece 4402 folio 84 pg 37)

Matthew married Edith Ann Hirst on 3 October 1905 at Swinton. He was aged 27 and an iron worker. His father was Henry Ardron, a miner and resident at 70 Charles Street. Edith was also aged 27. Her father was William Hirst (deceased) from Conisborough. (APR) This is confirmed by a GRO index entry. (GRO ref Rotherham 9c 1205 Dec 1905)

Interestingly her elder sister Mary Jane Hirst married John Ardron V (1876 - 1937), 1st cousin of her own husband.
