On
Saturday 30 June 1855, the apparently successful business partnership between
father and son, Samuel Ardron Senior and Samuel Ardron Junior, was dissolved.
(Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Tuesday 14 July 1855)
On
Tuesday 23 October 1855 the freehold property fronting Trippet Lane and Holly
Street, Sheffield, occupied by Messrs. Ardron and Son, Britannia Metal Manufacturers
was to be sold at auction by Mr Nicolson, at his Auction Mart, High-street,
Sheffield, at four o’Clock in the afternoon. The property was extensive,
consisting of:
“a capital Dwelling-House, with the
Workshops and an entire Yard thereto, situate in and fronting to Holly-street,
and nearly extending to West-street, in Sheffield aforesaid, and now in the
Occupation of Messrs. Ardron and Son, Britannia Metal Manufacturers ; a
commodious Dwelling-House, large front Shop, several Warehouses, Store Rooms and
Cellarage for Horns, and Ranges of well-lighted Workshops, and an entire Yard,
protected by folding Doors, fronting to Holly-street and Trippet-lane, in
Sheffield aforesaid, for many years past in the occupation of Mr. George
Chester, Ivory and Horn Merchant.
There is a capital
12-Horse Power High Pressure Horizontal Steam Engine, by Walker, Eaton and Co.,
upon the last mentioned Premises, with Shafting and Gear to several of the
Workshops.
The Property has a
Frontage of 36 feet to Trippet-lane, and of 108 to Holly-street, and the whole
site contains 555 superficial square yards, or thereabouts.
There is a considerable
quantity of ground unbuilt upon very eligible for the erection of Workshops, to
which Steam Power could easily be supplied from the present Engine.” (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph,

However
the business continued to be listed in local directories - in 1857 as “Ardron,
Samuel & Son, scale pressers, 12 Holly Street”. ("Post
Office Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire, 1857" - Sheffield,
Commercial)
At the end of July 1857 an advert appeared for the
sale of Samuel’s manufacturing paraphenalia including pressing vices, handles,
scales and metal pans amongst other things at 12 Holly Street. All were noted
to be in good working order. (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Thursday, July 30, 1857)
In
November 1858 Samuel was looking to sell the properties he had leasehold on:
“TO be SOLD by Private Contract. Nine Leasehold DWELLING-HOUSES and a WORKSHOP,
situate near Nos. 32 and 34, Thomas-street, near Bath-street. The Ground Plot,
containing 500 Yards, is held on a Lease of 800 years.” (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Wednesday, November 24, 1858)
Samuel died
on 3 March 1860. (Date of birth
from Wills & Admons + GRO ref Ecclesall B 9c 174 Mar 1860) His
death was also listed in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph in the Tuesday 6 March,
though his death date was given as 2 March. He was 78 and of Egerton Street. (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Tuesday 6 March 1860)
His will was probated on 24 May 1860 – “24
May the will of Samuel Ardron late of Sheffield in the county of York deceased
who died 3 March 1860 at Sheffield aforesaid was proved at Wakefield by the oaths
of John Merrill of Sheffield aforesaid Horn Merchant and James Brinnen of the
same place Butcher the executors. Effects under £100” (Wills & Admons, 1860)

She was born in 1777
at Sheffield. (Based on 1851
Census + age at death) However there was a christening
recorded for an Elizabeth Darwent on 9 June 1776 at the Cathedral Church of St
Peter & St Paul, Sheffield. Her father was shown as Thomas Darwent. (IGI)
