My G-G-G-G-G-Great Uncle was born on 8 September 1782 and was baptised on 13 October of that year in Laughton En Le Morthen. His father was Thomas Ardron, a blacksmith, and his mother is shown as Ann. (APR + Genuki - The Parish Baptism Registers for Laughton en le Morthen, 1780-1789)

In 1800 Samuel was apprenticed to Joseph Nutt, a knife maker, of Wadsley [formerly a rural village 3 miles north-west of the centre of Sheffield].

Samuel married Elizabeth Darwent on 19 February 1805 at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield. (APR)

In the 1833 edition of “Whites History & Directory of Sheffield” Samuel was listed as “Ardron, Samuel (horn scale presser). Address: 20 Burgess Street.” (Whites History & Directory of Sheffield, 1833)

In the 1837 edition of “Whites Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham”  Samuel had moved and was now listed as “Ardron, Samuel (horn haft & scale presser). Address: 38 Holly Street”. (Whites Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham, 1837)

On the 1841 Census (6 June) Samuel was shown as being head of household at Holly Street, Sheffield:

In the 1841 edition of “Henry & Thos. Rodgers Sheff & Roth Directory” Samuel had moved from number 38 to number 12 ([or they had been renumbered] and was now listed as “Ardron, Samuel (Horn Hafter And Scale Presser). Address: 12 Holly Street”. (Henry & Thos. Rodgers Sheff & Roth Directory, 1841)

By 1849 Samuel and his son Samuel had set up in partnership:
“Ardron, Samuel and Son, horn pressers and Britannia metal ware manufacturers, 12 Holly Street; house, court 32 Thomas Street” ("General Directory of the Town & Borough of Sheffield with Rotherham, Chesterfield and all the parishes, townships, villages and hamlets within a circuit of about 12 miles round the capital of Hallamshire" by William White, 1849)

On Saturday 30 June 1855, the apparently successful business partnership between father and son, Samuel Ardron Senior and Samuel Ardron Junior, was dissolved. (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Tuesday 14 July 1855)

image004On Tuesday 23 October 1855 the freehold property fronting Trippet Lane and Holly Street, Sheffield, occupied by Messrs. Ardron and Son, Britannia Metal Manufacturers was to be sold at auction by Mr Nicolson, at his Auction Mart, High-street, Sheffield, at four o’Clock in the afternoon. The property was extensive, consisting of:
 “a capital Dwelling-House, with the Workshops and an entire Yard thereto, situate in and fronting to Holly-street, and nearly extending to West-street, in Sheffield aforesaid, and now in the Occupation of Messrs. Ardron and Son, Britannia Metal Manufacturers ; a commodious Dwelling-House, large front Shop, several Warehouses, Store Rooms and Cellarage for Horns, and Ranges of well-lighted Workshops, and an entire Yard, protected by folding Doors, fronting to Holly-street and Trippet-lane, in Sheffield aforesaid, for many years past in the occupation of Mr. George Chester, Ivory and Horn Merchant.

There is a capital 12-Horse Power High Pressure Horizontal Steam Engine, by Walker, Eaton and Co., upon the last mentioned Premises, with Shafting and Gear to several of the Workshops.

The Property has a Frontage of 36 feet to Trippet-lane, and of 108 to Holly-street, and the whole site contains 555 superficial square yards, or thereabouts.

There is a considerable quantity of ground unbuilt upon very eligible for the erection of Workshops, to which Steam Power could easily be supplied from the present Engine.” (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Tuesday, October 23, 1855)

However the business continued to be listed in local directories - in 1857 as “Ardron, Samuel & Son, scale pressers, 12 Holly Street”. ("Post Office Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire, 1857" - Sheffield, Commercial)

image006At the end of July 1857 an advert appeared for the sale of Samuel’s manufacturing paraphenalia including pressing vices, handles, scales and metal pans amongst other things at 12 Holly Street. All were noted to be in good working order. (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Thursday, July 30, 1857)

image008In November 1858 Samuel was looking to sell the properties he had leasehold on: “TO be SOLD by Private Contract. Nine Leasehold DWELLING-HOUSES and a WORKSHOP, situate near Nos. 32 and 34, Thomas-street, near Bath-street. The Ground Plot, containing 500 Yards, is held on a Lease of 800 years.” (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Wednesday, November 24, 1858)

image010 Samuel died on 3 March 1860. (Date of birth from Wills & Admons + GRO ref Ecclesall B 9c 174 Mar 1860) His death was also listed in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph in the Tuesday 6 March, though his death date was given as 2 March. He was 78 and of Egerton Street. (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Tuesday 6 March 1860)

                                                                                   

His will was probated on 24 May 1860 – “
24 May the will of Samuel Ardron late of Sheffield in the county of York deceased who died 3 March 1860 at Sheffield aforesaid was proved at Wakefield by the oaths of John Merrill of Sheffield aforesaid Horn Merchant and James Brinnen of the same place Butcher the executors. Effects under £100” (Wills & Admons, 1860)

Elizabeth DARWENT (1777 - 1853)
She was born in 1777 at Sheffield. (Based on 1851 Census + age at death) However there was a christening recorded for an Elizabeth Darwent on 9 June 1776 at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield. Her father was shown as Thomas Darwent. (IGI)

On the 1841 Census (6 June) Elizabeth was shown aged 65, living with her husband at at Holly Street, Sheffield. (PRO ref HO107/1338/6/13/6/7/16)

On the 1851 Census (30 March) Elizabeth was shown aged 74, living with her husband at 12 Holly Street, Sheffield. (PRO ref HO107 piece 2338 folio 259 pg 24) – shown as ADRON on Ancestry.co.uk index

Elizabeth was “a consistent member of the Methodist Society for 57 years”. (Death notice, Sheffield and Rotherham Independent, 9 April 1853)

John married Elizabeth Gyite on 27 December 1838 at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield. He was aged 25 and of Holly Street. His father was Samuel. Elizabeth was also aged 25 and of Broad Lane. Her father was William Gyite. (APR)

It is not clear whose son Samuel, aged 3, was, born c. 1858. No GRO birth index entry can be found.

On the 1871 Census John is aged 57 and has hit on hard times as he is shown as a pauper inmate at the Sheffield Union Workhouse:
