On the 1851 Census (30 March) he was aged 15, a coal miner, living with his parents at Killamarsh. (PRO ref HO107 piece 2148 folio 410 pg 15)

William married Eliza Littlewood (aged 19) at Sheffield Parish Church on 20 November 1853. He was a miner, aged 21, resident at Blast Lane and his father was a blacksmith. Her father, John Littlewood was a labourer. (GRO cert Dean Ardron + GRO ref Sheffield 9c 364 Dec 1853)

William died on 16 July 1868 at Kilnhurst. He was a collier. An inquest held on 17 July 1868 found that he had committed suicide by cutting his own throat whilst temporarily insane. (GRO cert Dean Ardron + GRO ref Rotherham 9c 405 Sep 1868 - aged 35)

The inquest into William’s death was held at the Commercial Hotel, Kilnhurst, before W. W. Woodhead, Esq., deputy coroner. William had been ill for some time, and was alone in his bedroom when he took his own life with a razor. A note written in lead pencil, and said to be in the deceased’s handwriting, was found in the room, and in this he asks his wife’s forgiveness. The verdict of the jury was “Suicide during temporary insanity” (Sheffield and Rotherham Independent, Saturday, July 18, 1868)

He was buried on 19 July 1868 at Kilnhurst. (Carol Ackroyd)

After the death of William, Eliza went on to marry Joseph Monkhouse, a miner on 31 July 1871 at Kilnhurst. She is shown as a widow. Her father was John Littlewood, a labourer. His father was Robert Monkhouse, a designer. (APR) This agrees with a GRO index entry. (GRO ref Rotherham 9c 657 Sep 1871)

By the 1881 Census (3 April) Eliza had remarried one Joseph Monkhouse and was living at 74 Victoria Street, Kilnhurst:

On the 1901 Census she is shown aged 63, living with her daughter, Ellen and husband Albert S. Shaw at 68 Hooton Road, Kilnhurst. Though it should be noted that she is shown as being married. (PRO ref (PRO ref RG13 piece 4402 folio 184 pg 31)

Joseph MONKHOUSE (1839 -)
He was born in 1839 at Kendall, Westmoreland. (Based on 1881 / 1891 Census)

She was baptised on 26 July 1857 at Eckington. Her father was a labourer from Mosborough. (APR) This agrees with the GRO index entry. (GRO ref Chesterfield 7b 492 Sep 1857)

On the 1861 Census (7 April) she was aged 4, living with her parents at Rotherham Road, Aston Cum Aughton. (PRO REF??)

On the 1871 Census (2 April) she was aged 10, a school girl, living with her widowed mother at 1 French’s Building, Kilnhurst. (PRO ref RG10/4712 folio 66)

Martha married John Sugden on 2 June 1879 at Kilnhurst. She was aged 18. Her father was a miner. John was aged 20 and also a miner. His father was Joseph Sugden, a grocer. (APR) This agrees with a GRO index entry. (GRO ref Rotherham 9c 644 Jun 1879)

My 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised on 28 July 1867 at Kilnhurst. His father was a miner. (APR)


Did Samuel die in 1867 aged 2 and was he buried on 6 December 1867? (APR + GRO ref Rotherham 9c 317 Dec 1867 - [aged] 2) Based on being aged 2 at death he would have been born in 1865 but no GRO birth index entry has been found.

Carol Ackroyd believes that there were two Samuels; 1) baptised on 3 February 1866 at St Thomas, Kilnhurst, 2) baptised 28 July 1867 at St Thomas, Kilnhurst. This would tie in with the GRO death reference for Samuel in 1867 aged 2.
