"Article in Lexington Progress, Nov. 25, 1910 states His boyhood days were spent on the farm, but he managed to pick up enough eduation to enable himto engage in teaching when he reached manhood. While teaching, which he followed for seven years, he began in 1872 the study of medicine. He began practice in 1887, moved to Lexington in 1897 and graduated from the Medical Dept. of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, in 1900. He took a post-graduate course in Chicago in 1903. In 1882, on the 14th of December, the Dr. was married to Miss L. E. McCallum, and they have an interesting family of five children, all of whom are with him except Elta, the second daughter, who married early in this year. Dr Arnold has property in the West and has made some prospecting trips out there, but he enjoys a large practice here and his friends hope that he is a fixture in Tennessee.

Obit. Lexington Progress, Aug. 1, 1930. James M. Arnold, son of the late Willis N. and Mrs. Margaret Garrett Arnold, was born in Henderson Co. July 27th, 1849, and died in his home in Lexington July 30th, 1930. His early years were spent on the farm and his first public work was teaching school in the county. In 1887 he graduated medicine and began the practice in his parental home in the old 5th district but some 32 years ago he came to Lexington and was here active until about seven years ago when he retired. On December 14th, 1882 he was married to Miss Lucy mcCollum and of the nine children born to the union, the following survive with their mother: Murry, Medina druggist; Lyman, Lexington; Loy (Mrs. I. M. Dennison), Lexington; and Miss Margie, unmarried. Elta married James Nuckolls and died several years ago, leaving her husband and one son, James, who has lived in the home of his grandparents practically all his life. Dr. Arnold was a member of the Baptist church and the last tribute to his memory in the service was held in his home and conducted by his pastor, Rev. Fleet-wood Ball, after which the body was carried to Unity near the old Arnold home. Dr. Arnold was a kindly man and his last years in Lexington were spent in peace, all the people making it a point to make his days pleasant ones. He seemed to enjoy life. We have come much into con-tact with him and feel that we did our reasonable part toward making such contact agreeable to him.

The aged widow is not in good health and with her children has our most heartfelt sympathy. "

Spartanburg County, South Carolina - Clerk of the Courts Office

Cross Index to Judgements (AFAS Vol. Vol. 2, #2, pg. 103)

9. Absolom Arendale, Defendant. Kirby and Lockhart, Plaintiff. 1841. Roll 2517. Defendant owed plaintiffs $87.80. He was served with a writ. He confessed judgement and signed promissory note (by mark).

24. John ARNOLD to Price Skinner, Deed Book T, p. 190, on Jimmys Creek. Witnesses are James Arnold and Absolom W. Arnold. This Absolom shared land with a William ARNOLD. It is not known whether this is my William Arnold or William B(lundell) Arnold, or an (as yet) unidentified William Arnold. An Absolom went to Alabama and became the ancestor of Mrs. Louie Horton. The Court of Equity files show an Absolom, son of Benjamin Arendell, died 1812, in Spartanburg. But the Absolom, son of Benjamin, who lived just over the county line in Union, is too old (1626 in 1820 census) to be Mrs. Hortons Absolom, whom she lists as born 1808. The similarity of names does suggest kinship of some sort, however.

25. George M. ARNOLD of Henderson County, Tennessee, to Jonathan Crook, Deed Book U. p. 568, 230 acres on Enoree River. This is the ancestor of Mrs. Thomas Arnolds husband, of Kennesaw, Ga., who says George M. married Sarah Hamnet. He is the son of John Arnold, died 1813, in Spartanburg. By 1832, George M.'s brother, Willis, is also in Henderson County, Tennessee. See Deed Book V, p 327.

The complainants further shew unto your honors that at the time the Testator pretended to have intermarried with the woman he calls his last wife She was the reputed and Lawful wife of a man by the name of Black who was at that time living and continued alive until after the birth of all the children named in the will to wit Jonathan, Nelly, Mary, Fanny & David by an unlawful and ellcit intercourse with the said Rachael who was the wife of the said Black in consequence of which the said children last mentloned are according to the Laws of the Land bastards or illegitimate. The complainants further shew unto your honors that the said illegitimate children & the sald Rachel Black or Fryer are the principal legatees under the will of the deceased and that they have received on account thereof a Large amount more than one fourth of the Estate contrary to the act of the Legislature in such case made & provided. Nelly has since intermarried with Moore H. Crow, Mary with William B. ARNOLD, and Fanny with Washington Casey who now have in their possession a part of the said property. The complainants further show unto your Honors that one Randall Crow of this district has in his possession a negro which Moore H. Crow Husband of Nelly obtained by his intermarriage with her the said Nelly which is a part of the property of the intestate, That she said Randall holds said negro as a pledge or security for the payment of a debt due as the complainants suppose by the said Crow, And the complainants consider themselves justly entitled to three fourths of the value thereof. Wiley Shackelford was the fourth child of Mordecai and Sarah "Polly" Jones-Shackelford, born about 1801 in or near Abbeyville, South Carolina. He shows up in the 1830 census for Abbeyville and in the 1840 census he was living in Anderson County, South Carolina. He married in the year 1843 to Martha Grissom. Martha was born in the state of Tennessee in 1821 and it is believed this is where they married. Sometime between 1840 and 1841, Wiley and his family moved to Tippah County, Mississippi, arriving there some 18 to 20 years before his brother John W. Shackelford. Wiley became a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in the southern part of Tippah County, near the Union County, Mississippi line in December, 1841.

SHACKELFORD FAMILY IN TIPPAH CO., MS By Grady Brown 1997

The 1840 U. S. Census in Henderson County TN, pg 40, line 24 lists a household headed by W. A. H. Sheckelford and includes 1 female under 5 (Nancy Elizabeth), 1 female 15-20 (Francis), and 1 male 20-30 (WAH), no slaves. The 1850 U. S. Census in Tishomingo County MS has the following house-hold on pg 98, Fam and Dwe No 162:

NAME AGE SEX OCCUPATION RE VALUE BORN
Willis A. H. Shackelford 30 M Farmer 400 Ala
Francis " 29 F Tenn
Nancy E. " 10 F Tenn
Martha J. " 8 F Miss
Eliza F. " 6 F Miss
Mary Ann " 5 F Miss
Charles R. " 3 M Miss
Wm. H. " 1 M Miss

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 1860 US Census, Tishomingo Co MS, pg 306, Dwe No 2043, the household headed by WAH Shackelford includes a female named Louiza C. Shackelford age 11/12 (11 months). She may have been a child or the child of some relative. No other record regarding this Louiza has been found. The following is quoted from Shackelford Clan Magazine, Vol 2, No 4, pgs 1-3:

"Willis Arnold Hopgood Shackelford "In the year 1819, October the 10th, in the humble farm home of Richard x Shackelford, Jr. and his wife, Frances (Fanny) Arnold-Shackelford in Madison County, Alabama, a new heir; their 6th child, third son, and one of their eleven children was born. The new heir was christened Willlis Arnold Hopgood. The first two names being for his maternal grandfather [actually for his mother's brother], and the third being for one of his Grandfather's associates in the ministry.

"Willis Arnold Hopgood Shackelford was destined to make his mark in the affairs of men, yet as men define greatness, he never attained that mark. But in another manner he did attain greatness, attained it in pioneering, and in being good, and in so living that even though he has long since passsed to his eternal reward, his influence will live on and on. "When but a small boy, perhaps no more than three or four years old his parents moved to Henderson County, Tenn., where he grew to manhood, and where he, on August 7, 1839, married the beautiful and charming Miss Frances Riddle. And to them were born 13 children, all of whom grew to manhood, and womanhood. All of whom, save one married and reared splendid families. The children being as follows:

Nancy Elizabeth, born June, 1840, d 1869
Martha Jane, b Aug. 21 1841, d Aug. 8, 1921
Eliza Frances, b July 9, 1843, d Jul. 25, 1916.
Mary Ann, b June 6, 1845, d Jan. 4, 1911.
Charles Richard, b May 12, 1847, d Apr 5, 1923.
William Harmon, b Dec. 24, 1848, d Apr. 4, 1922
Emily Kiziah, b Oct. 2, 1850, d Sept. 6, 1919.
Harriet Milbrey, b Jun. 13, 1852, d July 7, 1927.
James Elliott, b Aug. 22, 1854, Living 1942.
Thomas Alfred, b Aug. 20, 1856, d Dec. 7, 1930.
Ludie Carrol, b Oct. 14, 1859, d Mar. 1, 1936.
Sarah Green, b July 7, 1862, Living 1942.
John Mitchum, b about 1865 d about 1895. "

The major part of the descendants of the above mentioned men and women are living in North Mississippi. And among them we found the sort of people that has aided in making the United States the country that it is today; good honest dependable citizens. "Willis Arnold Hopgood Shackelford married in Henderson Co., Tenn., but soon after he moved to Mississippi, and settled near the little village of Burton, Tishomingo Co. He passed to his eternal reward Sept. 10, 1903, as he lived, peacefully and quietly, and was laid to rest beside his beloved wife, who had preceded him in death May 10, 1890.

"The Editor of the Shackelford Clan Magazine does not have a full and complete record of the descendants of Willis A. H. Shackelford, but we have records showing that he had 13 children, 97 grand children and 252 great grand children, which is quite a record in itself. "Willis Arnold Hopgood Shackelford espoused the cause of the Confederacy, and was elected captain. But early in 1862 he was captured by the Union forces at the battle of Fort Donelson, and was a prisoner of war for several months. Later he was exchanged, and re-entered the Confederate service; but after a short time his health failed and he was discharged. He went to war leaving a wife and eleven children. "Willis A. H. Shackelford was identified with the best element of citizenship, and his relationship to that noble band of pioneers who blazed out the path of civilization in this country during the latter half of the last century, causes him to describe more than a passing notice. "He was a marked type of old southern citizenship, a plain unpretentious man without ambition or taste for the superficial in life, a despiser of shams, and with no disposition to accommodate his conduct to the conventionalities which go to make up the life of this age. And for a number of years, on this account, his life was in the past, events and customs of fifty or sixty years previous being always uppermost in his mind. His good deeds will never adorn the pages of history, but their silent influence will not cease to be felt by the generations who are and are to be the beneficiaries. "He was a worthy citizen of both Tennessee and Mississippi, a pioneer, patriot and patriarch, diplomat and soldier, maker of memorable history, and founder of a remarkable family. He was earnest, taciturn, self-contained and had that quaint consciousness of power usually seen in born leaders of men. He had winning ways and made no fuss, he had what was of value beyond price - a love of virtue, an Intrepid soul, an emulous desire for honest fame. "He possessed to an eminent degree the confidences, esteem and Veneration of all his contemporaries. His worth in service in peace and in war are gratefully remembered. Amiable in private life, wise in council, vigilant in camp, courageous in battle, strong in adversity, generous in defeat, and revered in death. May he be numbered among the blessed."

Source 7 gives the marriage place as Hardin Co, TN.

From the New Hope Association of Primitive Baptists -- 58th Annual Session that was held at mackey's Creek Church, Prentiss County, Miss. Sept. 10, 11, 1904: "Capt. W.A.H. Shackelford "In memory of our dearly beloved brother, W.A.H. Shackelford, who was born in Madison County, Alabama, Oct. 10, 1819, and was married to Francis Riddle, Aug. 7, 1839. He moved to Mississippi on March 10, 1842, where he lived a quiet and peaceful life until May 10, 1890, when the death angel visited his home, calling her hence, leaving him alone. In November 1890 he was married to Miss Lou Moore, with whom he enjoyed life until September 12, 1903, at which time he quietly passed away, leaving a worthy companion and eleven children, and a host of friends to mourn his departure. Brother Shackelford joined Mackey's Creek Church in July 1866. In 1867 he was chosen deacon of said church, and ordained to the duties of that office by Elders J. B. Huddleston and W. H. Riddle in May 1867, which position he held in Mackey's Creek Church until his death. Brother Shackelford was a faithful member and officer, was ready on all occasions to serve where duty demanded, so long as he was physically able.

That as a brotherhood we deeply symphatize with his companion and children, and friends in this sad bereavement. We deeply feel our loss as a brotherhood, but we realize that our loss is his eternal gain. "W.A.H. Shackelford enlisted in the CSA when he was 41 years old. He joined the 26th Miss. Infantry, Co. H. in 1861 in Iuka Miss., along with several of his Riddle and Shackelford kin and was commissioned Captain. When the Regiment surrendered at Fort Donelson, Tenn on February 16, 1962 to the Union Army he was confined in prison on Johnson's Island (near Sandusky, Ohio) and later paroled and sent to Vicksburg in Sept. 1, 1862. In July of 1863 he resigned his commission as Captain because of bad health. His record states that he had chronic hepatitis and chronic rheumatism, which prevented him from marching with his men. Later he returned to duty and probably was used in Mississippi. In September of 1863 he was captured again by Union Soldiers at his home and kept in Memphis for a while before being sent to Alton Prison in Illinois. He son said that at the time of his capture he was unable to get on his horse he kept tied in a thicket in back of his home. When he got ready to leave home the Yankees were there waiting for him! "In January (1864) he was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio, and finally moved to Point Lookout Prison, Maryland, where he was until the war ended. His son stated that he returned home and was blind during the last eight years of his life."

James Shackelford, son of Roger, the immigrant, married Elizabeth Robbins, daughter of Christopher Robbins, in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Va, July 14, 1687. James and Elizabeth had the following children: James, James, Mary, Roger, Charles, Robert, John, Jane, Diana and Richard.

----------

Probably others. (It will be noted here that the first two were named James, so probably the first one died before the birth of the second.)

This John, son of James and Elizabeth, was born about 1700. And the John who married Anne Lyne was born about 1700. And John and Anne lived in King and Queen Co, which adjoins Gloucester, where Roger the immigrant, lived, and where James and Elizabeth lived also.

James Shackelford, son of the immigrant, died before 1734, and his widow Elizabeth, with her elder son James and other children moved to Spottsylvania Co., but it is not known if the son John went with them. John would have then been about 34 years of age, and most likely was already married and living in Gloucester County, or had moved over into King and Queen.

Now this John, according to the Hord genealogy, by Rev Arnold Harris Hord, is the same John who married Anne. They had the following children: James B., Lyne, Benjamin, Samuel, John, Richard, Zachariah, and William; and perhaps a George.
