THE LAURENS COUNTY, SC ARNOLDS

John, William, Reuben,  Samuel Arnold, and Rev. Zachariah

The Arnold family of Laurens Co., South Carolina has been proven through DNA to be related to my own Zachariah W. Arnold family of Greenwood Co., South Carolina. And both of these Arnold groups have been proven through the same DNA study, to be directly related to the Arnolds of Mecklenburg/Lunenburg Counties, Virginia. Participants in both families submitted samples of their DNA and the results came back with a 24/25 marker match between the Laurens Co., SC Arnolds and the Abbeville Co., SC Arnolds. The Mecklenburg/Lunenburg Co., VA Arnolds had a 23/25 match between them and the South Carolina Arnolds.

What this mean is that the South Carolina Arnolds are related to the Mecklenburg/Lunenburg Co., VA Arnolds within four to seven generations.

This is a new development in my Arnold research and at the present I am unsure as to where the South Carolina Arnolds tie into the Mecklenburg/Lunenburg Co., VA Arnolds. I was not expecting to find these results when we consented to the DNA study. But DNA does not lie so I am presently trying to find descendants of James and Martha Atkinson Arnold who moved south into South Carolina.

From historical documents, I know that the Rev. Zachariah Arnolds parents were named "William and Mary Arnold". Both parents were born in Virginia and migrated into Laurens County, South Carolina around 1789, settling on Raeburns Creek. William and Mary Arnold had children: John, William Jr., Samuel, Reuben, and Zachariah Arnold. All lived near what is now known as the Waterloo area of Laurens County.

William ARNOLD b. abt. 1745 VA; d. 1815 Laurens Co., SC. Married Mary Unknown, (possibly Mary DAVENPORT, daughter of Ann Arnold and William Davenport). If this is the same Wm. Arnold who married Mary Davenport, they married between 1743-1755 in Spotsylvania Co., VA (Little Rocky Creek). Family moved to Randolph Co., North Carolina about 1779, then to Laurens District, South Carolina by 1787 and finally settling into Greenville District by 1800. Is found in Laurens Co. as early as 1790 (src. LAURENS COUNTY DEEDS, BOOK D, pg. 289)

MY NOTE: Mountain Creek is the middle fork of Raeborn Creek in Laurens County and Raeborn Creek feeds into the Reedy River, west of the town of Laurens. According to the JURY LIST OF SOUTH CAROLINA 177801779, this is considered the "Upper Part of the Middle Division Between Broad and Saluda Rivers". Also living in this area was WILLIAM BARKSDALE, NATHAN BARKSDALE and WILLIAM VAUGHN, all of Mecklenburg / Lunenburg Co., Virginia. The Arnolds of Mecklenburg / Lunenburg Co. Virginia are proven to be related to the Laurens Co. Arnolds through DNA testing.
