THOMAS ARNOLD and ABIGAIL WYCHE

This Arnold family has always intrigued me due to the fact that they had a similiar migration as the other Arnolds who left Virginia, migrated into North Carolina then ended up in Laurens County, South Carolina near the Rev. Zachariah Arnold lived or in Bedford County, Tennessee where descendants of James and Martha Atkinson Arnold lived and where the sons of Francis and Candace Kent Arnold moved to. Is there a connection? Possibly but more evidence needs to surface before that conclusion can be made.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Elijah Arnold b. 1685 Virginia; d. 1759 Virginia.

1. Nicholas ARNOLD b. Abt. 1730/1734 Culpeper Co., VA; d. 1808 Bourbon Co., KY

2. Thomas ARNOLD b. Abt. 1727 Virginia; d. February 8, 1785 Surry Co., NC. Married Abigail WYCHE (BREWER). Thomas Arnold served as Captain in the Revolutionary War, and was retired and assigned to the "Regiment of Invalids" composed entirely of officers under the command of Colonel Lewis Nicolas until 1783. He was given half pay, commissioned and bounty lands, by Act of Congress Aug. 14, 1776. Abigail Wyche may have been the daughter of Henry Wyche of Brunswick Co., VA (eary 1700s) and her marriage to Thomas Arnold may have been her second marriage. I find a Henry Wyche who left his will in Brunswick Co., VA naming his daugher "Abigail Brewer", wife of George Brewer, in 1740 very near where the Lunenburg Arnolds lived. Henry Wyche names his sons Henry, William, daughters Abigail Brewer, Rebecca and Elizabeth Wyche, and wife Frances. The Wyche family and Brewer familiy lived on the Beaverpond Creek in Brunswick Co., VA in 1741.

Thomas Arnold and his son Samuel are mentioned prominently in the Family Bible of James and Nannie Francis Arnold. Their fundamental information is corroborated by an LDS file for William "Wid" Arnold. The Family Bible information included anecdotal stories and few dates except for James Arnold's immediate family and was not connected with William "Wid" Arnold until the LDS file was found. The bible states that Captain Thomas Arnold served in the "Regiment of Invalids" under the command of Colonel Lewis Nicolas until 1783. This assertion has not yet been independently confirmed. Although the bible is not exactly clear, it appears that neither source mentions any children other than Samuel. The bible seems to mention that Elizabeth Wyche came from a family of eighteen children.

ALFRED ARNOLD

Alfred Arnold was born in South Carolina around 1800. By at 23, when his son Pascall was born, he had married and settled in Tennessee. He was in Arkansas by 1829, when Sherrod was born. By 1836, he was in White County, where he married Lucretia Magness on August 28. Although the 1840 census still lists him in White County, he received land patents in Independence County in 1835 and 1839. By 1850 he was living in Independence County with Lucretia and children Pascall (1823 TN), William R. (1825 TN), Sherrod (1829 AR), Nancy (1838 AR), Louisa (1840 AR), John (1842 AR), Helen (1845 AR) and Alfred (1848 AR). He owned five slaves at the time. By 1860 he had additional children Albert (1851) and Celey (1854). According to Independence County marriage records, Pascall married Susan Magness on Jan. 12, 1851. William married Catherine Magness on May 14, 1862. He died on November 10, 1880, and is buried in Akron Cemetery. Sherrods marriage is not recorded in Independence County, but he died in 1862 leaving three minor children, Oma, William and Sherrod. Nancy Arnold married H.C. (Clay) Tunstall on October 27, 1852; her second marriage was to Charles Johnson of Pesea County, Texas, on Sept. 24, 1865. (Clay Tunstall may have earlier married another Arnold daughter; marriage records list a marriage to Mary Jane Arnold, 15, on Feb. 28, 1849). Louisa Arnold married David Holderby on July 15, 1857; she later married Legrand Fort on July 21, 1869. John married Catherine Eaves (daughter of Thomas Eaves, another South Carolinian) on March 15, 1866. She must have died soon after, as he married Catherine Reeves on February 7, 1867. Helen married R.P.H. Magness on November 10, 1861. Albert Arnold died on August 7, 1899 and is buried in Blue Springs Cemetery. Alfred Arnold Sr. was dead by 1861, when his will was filed for probate. His female heirs were listed as Nancy (Mrs. Clay) Tunstall, Helen Arnold, Jane (Mrs. James) Johnson and Almira (Mrs. Henry) Divers. This was probably an older daughter; an Elmira Arnold married Henry Divers on July 4, 1848. Male heirs were Paschal, Sherrod, William R., John, Albert, and Alfred Arnold.
