Mr. Henry J. Aten         Hiawatha Kansas

Dear Cousin:  I send to you herewith a letter received by me a few days ago from Miss Mary McMurtrie, and as you will see she wishes some historical facts about the early ancestors.  I send this to you to read that you may see, she claims that by her researches she finds there is some erroneous ideas as to which of the family married certain persons—for instance you have it “Mary married Jesse Bowman & Sarah—a McMurtrie etc etc.

This young lady is as you will see a descendant of Mary (Aten) McMurtrie and she also bears the name Mary Aten McMurtrie—I know the young lady very well…she has been to my house several times—I wrote to her and said I would write to you for you, if you desired to, to write to her and give her what

information you can about your branch of the family.  The one thing I thought you might possibly be pleased to hear about—is you see she has the history of “Mary”—“Sarah” & :”Thomas”, and can give that history to you if you wish it.  Miss McMurtrie is descended from the “Aten” family on both sides from her father as stated in her letter, and then her mother’s maiden name was Sarah Aten and who is the daughter of Simon Aten and Lavina his wife—Simon lived just across from Belvidere and died in April 1895 aged nearly 88 years and he was a grandson of Hendrick or Henry who was a brother of your ancestor “Derick.”  Miss Mary A. McMurtrie is a young spinster and a bright woman.  I wrote (as above stated) to her that I would write to you and kindly ask you, or rather suggest to you to write to her, so if you desire to do so she will no doubt be pleased to hear from you.  If we out here keep on you will soon be able to hear something from nearly each one of the old branches of the family.—We are all well at present at my home.  Mrs. Hay is quite well.  I send kind regards to you all.  I write this very hurriedly—Yours very sincerely         Nicholas Harris

Along margin of first page:  “You will no doubt wonder why I send the letter to you, but I have all the time understood that you wish history of the old family of  Aten.”
