Town
of Belvidere, Nicholas Harris, Mayor Jan
2nd 1907
Dear
Cousin Henry J.:
Another
year has gone and 1907 has been ushered into existance. How swiftly time does
pass along. I well remember that long
years ago, I learned the words, “tempus fuget.”
Stella
can tell you the meaning of the two words quoted. I am 53 years of age, and as I look back I begin to feel that I
am growing old.
On
New Year’s day, Jan., 1st
1907 at twelve o’clock noon I retired from the office of Mayor of
Belvidere.
I am glad to be rid of the duties of the office. I send to you herewith a slip cut from
one
of our town papers. Read it. I also
send to you a slip containing the notice of the death of Ellen’s only sister
who was buried on Christmas day. We
were at the funeral. She was buried in
the old graveyard along the Delaware that you visited, wherein (was) buried Dirck
and Hendrick Aten. The old stone
at the head of the grave of Dirck (Derrick or Richard) your ancestor is still
standing. I stood by its side on
Christmas day. Of course you can never
forget your visit to that place in 1898. We are all well at my home at this
time and I hope that you are all usually well at your home. We are having an
open winter, no snow yet, and no very cold weather. I hope you all have a merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year day. We all send love and kind regards to you
all.
