LISTS OF CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS
The National Park Service has published names of soldiers of
the Civil War, both Union and Confederate, at http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/.
This web site is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in researching
ancestors involved in the Civil War.
Joseph Lee Auten (see DNA Project, Pedigree-John-1675), a
descendant of Folkert Auten-1760 who moved from New Jersey to North Carolina,
became interested in researching families who split over the Civil War with
some becoming soldiers in the Union forces and some with the Confederacy. His
goal is to write their story. We are working with him to compile and identify
as comprehensive lists as possible of ATEN, AUTEN, ATON and AUTON men who
served in the Civil War and place them here.
Joe compiled the names from The National Park Service site
shown above. Files of Mamie McKinney, Karen Hillman and Dorothy Armitage
contained a few more. The lists are still probably not absolutely complete, and
although identification of their families has been done carefully using Mamie’s
FTM files, censuses and information provided by descendants, it is probably not
perfect. There appear to be some duplications in the NPS lists, too. If anyone
who sees this has knowledge of another soldier or believes an ID is incorrect,
will you please write and tell us?
Known family veterans that were not found in the NPS lists but who served
in the Civil War have been inserted in these files using ** to indicate their
names and data in place of the usual Number at the beginning of the line.
Periodically these files will be revised and noted in NEW
ADDITIONS.
