[Close Window]
At the end of World War I, Poland was given a portion of German providing access to the Baltic Sea. This was known as the Polish Corridor and was granted by the Treaty of Versailles. This area was once a part of a Polish region known as Pomerelia. Prussia took control of this territory in 1772. In 1871, Germany gained control of it when Prussia became a German state. This area includes the sea port of Gdynia and the towns of Bydgoszcz, Grudziadz and Toran. The area is largely agriculture.

As a consequence, East Prussia was separated geographically from Germany. This lead to the area having a mix of German and Polish speaking people. The area was later to come under Germany's control in 1939 at the out break of World War II. Poland would regain control at the end of the war in 1945.
