FORMED IN COCKE CO. TENNESSEE BY WILLIAM ROADMAN SMITH AND UNDER THE COMMAND OF LT. GEN. JOHN C. PEMBERTON
Confederate Soldiers Captured AT THE FALL OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI
4 JULY 1863
According to the Confederate records I have obtained on my gg grandfather, Henry Girdine Bolch, the 62nd Regiment Tennessee Infantry was also known as the 80th Rowan's Regiment, organized 8 Oct 1862 and was mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America 11 Nov 1862 with JOHN ROWAN, Colonel; WILLIAM PARKER, Lieutenant Colonel; S. D. REYNOLDS, Major, and P. B. MAYFIELD, Adjutant.
Each company was recruited & commanded by:
COMPANY A Bradley County, NATHANIEL ATKINSON
COMPANY B Polk County, P. L. BIBLE
COMPANY C McMinn County, W. A. MAYO
COMPANY D Monroe County, R. C. ROWAN
COMPANY E Bradley County, F. M. LOWERY
COMPANY F Loudon County, J. G. BLAIR
COMPANY G McMinn County, W. W. GRUBB
COMPANY H Monroe County, SAMUEL HENLEY
COMPANY I Cocke County, WILLIAM SMITH
COMPANY K Monroe County, JOSHUA HOLCOMB
While this regiment was on their way to Vicksburg, at the Big Black River Bridge in Mississippi on May 16 & 17th 1863, 1800 Confederate troops were captured by the Union Army. My grandfather Bolch was one of the men captured. Those men who were not captured at that battle went to Vicksburg and were captured there. He was sent to Camp Morton, Indiana as a prisoner of war until Feb 17, 1865. He was required to take the "oath of allegiance" in order to obtain his release.
Company I was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4th July 1863, and after being exchanged was assigned to Brig. Gen. Vaughn's Brigade. The men were forced to take the "oath of allegiance", but many went back to their units and continued to fight. Some changed sides and signed up with the Federal Army and fought against their brothers and fathers. The officers weren't exchanged and sent to various Federal prisons.
