Last fall in October, 2006 a group of Bolch/Bolick descendants of Johann Adam Bolch/Bolick SR and Anna Christina gathered to clean the old BOLCH family cemetery located near Lyle's Creek. The cemetery is on land owned by the Superior Elastic Co and is located on Spencer Road between Springs Road and Hwy 70A, Hickory, NC.

Directions to cemetery: On Interstate 40 from Asheville, get off at the Fairgrove Church Road exit, turn left on Fairgrove Church Road, go as far as you can go to a "T" intersection and turn left, turn right on Spencer Road. Go to the Superior Elastic Co on the left (abt 1/2 mile) and park in the parking lot. You will have to walk down the hill on the left. There will be an orange gate, climb over the gate and head towards the right, you will find the cemetery in the trees. You can't see the cemetery from the road.

The group was organized by wife of my 4th cousin, Bruce Bolick, Mrs. Nancy Stedman Bolick. I had the pleasure of being their guest in their home for our mission to clean the cemetery. Left to right Nancy Stedman Bolick, Carolyn Whitaker, and Bruce Wayne Bolick.

This cemetery sits on land that Adam purchased from Henry Schmitt Lincoln Co NC deed book 17 pg 176, 22 Aug 1788 Henry Smith & wife Christina (Mecklenburg Co) to Adam Bolek Sr (Lincoln Co); for 27 pds NC money sold 400 acres on SOUTH BRANCH OF LYLES CREE; border: PHILP ADAMS and "THE" WAGON ROAD, INCLUDES A SHOAL AND HIS OWN IMPROVEMENT, granted 21 July 1774 to HENRY SMITH signed HENRY SMIT & CHRISTINA SMIDIN'S (SIC) marks Witness Nelilhalin ? Diehl (german) & Jacob Diehl (german) recorded Jan 1795 Book 17 pg 167 and adjoins the land grant he received Sept 20 1779.

Two of Adam's sons Sebastian and Casper inherited the land when Adam died. Sebastian inherited the Western or Northern side of Lyle's Creek, adjoin the land of George Adam Schmitt

Casper SR inherited in the Eastern or South side of LYLE'S CREEK where the cemetery is located. We know for certain that his son Solomon Bolch Be sure to click on Solomon's name for the link to the database at rootsweb for his updated family members.

is buried in this cemetery along with his wife Elizabeth Bolch,

dtr of John Bolch (son of Sebastian) and Christina Bolch (daughter of Adam JR). Solomon's son Wallis Alexander Bolch b 6 Sept 1825 died 19 Feb 1857

married his cousin Ellenora Bolch, dtr of my 3rd great grandfather Henry Bolch who married Sally Hunsucker.Henry is the grandson of Jacob Bolch and Maria Salome Grimes. Solomon's son Absalom Ephraim Lawrence Bolch's

1st wife Sally Emaline Propst (descendant of Sebastian Bolch) b 29 July 1840 died 22 Dec 1874 (dtr of Henry Propst and Mary Magdalene Bowman)

and their son William Pinkney Bolch born 19 July 1862 died 27 Feb 1864

are also buried here.

Sarah Saloma Bolick born 21 Aug 1817 died 26 Jan 1894

is also buried here, dtr of John Bolch (son of Casper) and Sarah/Sally Bolch (dtr of Jacob Bolch and Maria Salome Grimes) married Jonas Bolick whom we believe to be the son of Daniel Bolch and Susannah K Simmons. Jonas may also be buried here.

Also, many unreadable sand tombstones.

So we have at least 4 of the sons of Adam SR that we know of represented in this cemetery. Adam Sr and Anna Christina may very well be buried here we just don't know for sure. Since Casper inherited the land he and his wife Maria Magdalena Deal may also be buried here.

Three of Solomon's sons were killed during the civil war and we have received tombstones from Veterans Administration and placed them in the cemetery. Thanks to Nancy Stedman Bolick, wife of Bruce Bolick and Bruce's cousin, Danny Bolick for placing the headstones in the cemetery, (both descendants of Jacob Bolch and Maria Salome Grimes). Danny

is also a descendant of Godfrey Bolch SR.

On Saturday, October 20th, 2007 we will be dedicating this cemetery and the three sons of Solomon for their civil war service. We plan to have a civil war re-enactment ceremony. We plan to do some further cleaning sometime in the fall, but we haven't set a date just yet. We also will be putting on final touches on the cemetery on Friday Oct 19th.

We would like to fence the cemetery and are asking for donations to accomplish this. You may contact me to tell you where to send any donations. It would be nice as well if we could raise enough money to put a family memorial in there as well with Johann Adam SR and Anna Christina's children, since this was a part of his original property.

All Bolch/Bolick descendants are invited to help us clean and preserve the cemetery, as well as attend the ceremony. I will provide the time once we have set it.
