MY GARDNER, MOORE, FRANKS, & POWELL FAMILIES

I now have been able to identify my 2nd great grandmother, Mary Ellen Franks Gardner, whom is the daughter of Isaac Franks and Hannah Elizabeth Wade. I have had this photo for some years and finally have now found my Gardner family. I had only known that she was "Grandma Gardner" written on this photograph. Finding my Gardner family has been a real chore in the fact that my great grandfather didn't leave much of a trail and no one left alive in the family was any more wiser about them either. Part of the reason too is due to my great grandparents divorcing in 1916 and grandpa left Kansas for parts unknown. There weren't any aunts or uncles around that we are aware of that visited with the children or grandchildren living in the Iola, Kansas vicinity. It is not known how much contact he had with his siblings, as he was quite a rough and rowdy character. It is my opinion that if he was around them they probably weren't so keen on his visits due to his drinking problem and onaryness. My cousin told me she didn't even know she had a grandpa Gardner until she was probably around 10 or 11. Out of the blue he reappeared. He had spent some years out in California where I find him living in 1920. So he wouldn't have been around when a few of the later grandchildren were born, including my father.

I finally was able to find him on the 1870 census with his family living in Emporia, Lyon Co. Kansas. From there the families moved over to Kansas City, Missouri, Meade Co. South Dakota, Minnesota, and Los Angeles, California. I am hoping to eventually make contact with other Gardner relatives and put our family back together.

My Gardner family goes back to early settlement of Belmont Co. Ohio. Although at this time I have no proof, I believe that my 4th great grandparents may have been Jeremiah Gardner/Garner who was born abt 1772 in Westmoreland, Virginia. Jeremiah married Deborah Mors (or is this Moore?) 5 Nov 1793 in Westmoreland Co. Virginia. No one seems to have the children of Jeremiah and Deborah and I think the reason may be because they moved to Belmont Co. Ohio by at least 1820. I believe that they were in Loudoun Co. Virginia in 1810 before they made the move to Belmont Co. Ohio.

Jeremiah may have been this same one that served in the War of 1812

On the 1810 Loudoun Co. Virginia census was a Jeremiah and Andrew GARNER. These two men then seem to appear in Belmont Co. Ohio by 1820. Andrew Garner had married Hannah Milner in Loudoun Co. Virginia 5 Jan 1799. On the 1820 Belmont Co. Ohio census we find:

I want to make note that one of the reasons I think this is because my 3rd great grandfather Washington named one of his son's Jeremiah, mostly likely in honor of his father.

I think that Jeremiah and Deborah had at least three children:

1) Washington Gardner b abt 1803 Virginia married Mary Moore 8 March 1827 Belmont Co. Ohio (MY DIRECT LINE)

2) Nancy Gardner b 4 Dec 1807 married William George Moore 30 Jan 1834 Belmont Co Ohio

3) Margaret Gardner b 1810 Virginia married Wesley Moore 29 Jan 1824 Belmont Co Ohio

All of these Moore's are siblings and children of Isaac Moore b abt 1776 died 1835 Belmont Co. Ohio, married 26 Jul 1801 Loudoun Co. Virginia to 1st wife, Sarah Campbell, who are the mother of these children. He married 8 Feb 1811 Loudoun Co. Virginia to 2nd wife, Francis Morris. Isaac left the following will in Belmont Co Ohio making provision for his children and his 2nd wife:

Whereas I Isaac Moore, of the County of Belmont and State of Ohio, being Weak in Body, but of Sound and disposing mind and memory, and Calling to attend the Certainty of death, and the uncertainty of of the time thereof do make Constitute and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following.

First and foremost after my decease my will is that my body be Committed to the earth and be decently buried, and my Soul into the the hands of him that gave it.

Secondly, as Soon as convenient after my decease I wish all my just debts and my funeral Expenses to be paid by my Executor hence after named.

Thirdly, I wish all my personal property sold at public sale by my Executor and my wife to have the third of the value thereof and my son William the other two thirds.

Fourthly my will is that my wife Fanny Moore have the dwelling house where we now live for one year after my decease and one years provision and after that time I will and bequeath the whole of said farm whereon I now live containing one hundred acres to my son William and his Heirs forever, with the following provisos;

first that he pay his stepmother Fanny Moore the sum of twenty-five Dollars/year During Her widowhood.

Secondly my will is that my son William shall pay his brother Westley two Hundred Dollars, and his sister MARY GARNER the summ of one Hundred and fifty Dollars, his sister JANE MARTIN one hundred and fifty Dollars in money or land as they shall Direct, and his sister ELIZA one hundred and fifty dollars within two years of my decease if Demanded and my three grand children MARY JANE, SARAH ANN & ISAAC AMBER MARSHAL the sum of fifty Dollars Each the same to be paid them by my Executors when they become of Age and to be put out at Interest after each one of them arrive at twelve years of Age and to my grand Daughter West the Mountain and daughter of my son ABNER MOORE, DEC the sum of fifty Dollars to be paid at the time of her Marriage or at the Age of Eighteen years, and

lastly I nominate Constituteand appoint my sons William and Westly Moore my lawful Executors to this my last Will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this 29th November in the Year of Our Lord one Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty four 1834

Daughter Jane Moore married 4 Sept 1832 William Carl Martin in Belmont Co. Ohio. By 1839 Jane and her family were in Bureau Co. Illinois where she died 18 Sept 1875. Other of the Moore families went to Jefferson Co. Iowa and Macomb, McDonough Co. Illinois. Daughter Sarah Ann Moore, who was dead when Isaac wrote his will, was married to Isaac Moore and had the three grandchildren mentioned in Isaac's will, Sarah Ann Marshall b 13 Jul 1829 married George Washington Kiser 21 Jun 1851 Bureau Co Ill; Mary Jane Marshall married Nehemiah Montgomery and Isaac Amber Marshall b abt 1832 married Amanda Phillips 3 Oct 1861 Belmont Co Ohio. Isaac Marshall then took his family to Cedar Co. Iowa by 1880.

My 3rd great grandparents Washington Gardner born abt 1804 Virginia and Mary Moore, married 8 Mar 1827 Belmont Co. Ohio. Apparently Mary has died abt 1835 and Washington married a 2nd time to Nancy M. McFrederick 8 Dec 1836. I think he has probably married a 3rd time to a Rebecca born abt 1819. I don't know if he had any children with her. I have not been able to locate him after 1850. Washington is in the 1830 & 1840 census of Belmont Co as well.

I believe that Deborah Moore Gardner was still alive in 1830 and living with her son Washington Gardner in Belmont Co Ohio.

I believe Washington married a Rebecca Harris prior to 1850 census, but have not found a marriage record for his 3rd marriage. On the Gardner mail list at rootsweb, I found this query. It may be that Washington and Rebecca had two sons together, Cleophas (male) Gardner b abt 1853 and Benjamin Franklin Gardner b 11 Oct 1854.

Hi- Thought I'd say that I am still looking for information that would connect Washington Gardner, age 48 in 1850, of Belmont County, Ohio with Cleophas Gardner, age 7 and Franklin Benjamin Gardner, age 5, in 1860 living with Benjamin and Rebecca Harris, ages 70 and 72, in Guernsey Co Ohio. I think Mary Gardner born 1840 is the daughter of Nancy M. McFrederick. I haven't found marriage records for the girls yet.

William (my direct line) b 16 March 1827 married Mary Ellen Franks 9 Jan 1850 in Muskingum Co. Ohio and were living as newlyweds in Belmont Co Ohio in 1850 a short distance from his father.

Mary Ellen Franks parents were Isaac Franks b 15 Mar 1811 West Virginia died 7 May 1893 Muscatine Co Iowa and Hannah Elizabeth Wade b 11 Dec 1813 Virginia died 26 Feb 1889 Muscatine Co Iowa. Both are buried in Harker Cemetery, Muscatine Co. Iowa, Flat Iron Point (city), Sweetland Twp.

It appears that Washington and Rebecca are both apparently dead by abt 1855. Then three of the boys, William, Andrew, and Jarrett pack up about this same time and leave Belmont Co. Ohio and head for Illinois, leaving brother Jeremiah Gardner behind. By 1860 all three boys are living in Bureau Co. Illinois near their Moore aunt's and uncles.

Andrew may have served in the Civil War in Bureau Co Illinois and later married Ruth Ann Moon in Macon Co. Illinois 4 Feb 1868. He then by 1880 was living in Piatt Co Illinois. My 2nd great grandparents are William Gardner born 16 Mar 1828 in Belmont Co. Ohio. He married Mary Ellen Franks 9 Jan 1850 Muskingum Co. Ohio. Mary was born 9 Sept 1830 Ohio.

By 1870 William and Mary (Franks) Gardner had moved to Emporia, Lyon Co. Kansas. I can't find William and Mary at all in 1880, but I know that Mary and the children are still alive in 1889 living in Kansas City, Missouri.
