ETIQUETTE Most of you know how to behave at the meal table and at a meeting. There is also the correct way to behave on a Newsgroup. SUBJECT LINES Make sure you include a name, date, and place in the subject line of your messages. Since you have joined a Genealogy Newsgroup you want to grab people's attention so that they will not miss that all important email which is YOURS. People who are in your Newsgroup are busy people. They haven't got the time to read every message that comes through. They look at the subject line and very quickly decide if they are going to be bothered opening the email. So if the subject heading is "Help re family", "Help please with birth" they will be passed and deleted. Unbeknown to the people skipping passed it, is that you are looking for the same family and need the name of their father to complete the jigsaw. Opportunity lost!!!! You need to sell your family history and you need to sell you emails to the group. So start with the Subject line and have something like this "ATTWOOD-Frome-SOM 1860+" "Looking for James HURLSTONE-Tylden VIC" If you are getting the Newsgroup in Digest version, special attention needs to be kept when sending replies to emails. Check that the Subject Heading has changed from "Digest Version #546" EXCESSIVE QUOTING Quote only the pertinent portion of someone else's message Cut down the size of your email by deleting everything that isn't relevant from the previous email. Quite a few people keep the previous email message in the reply email. This adds to the size of the email. Remember quite a few people pay for the time they are on line and downloading their email. Either untick the box on your email program that automatically quotes the message of the sender or chop off what is not needed yourself. PLEASE DON'T SHOUT Make sure you use both upper and lowercase letters in you messages. Using all upper-case letters is considered SHOUTING Shouting is probably the first mistake you will make when you first start emailing people. To shout you type the message in capitals. Messages typed in caps is construed as shouting. It is a major faux pas on the Internet. There is one exception. When you are sending messages to people about your genealogy, it is acceptable to type the surname all in capitals. |
