SMILEY FACES & OTHER EXPRESSIONS

Remember how difficult it is to convey emotions through email. Using emoticons can help.

Sometimes to let a person you are emailing you can let them know what sort of mood you are in. You can let them know that what you just said was said as a joke :-). Here are some basic Smileys.

:-) Basic smiley
:-( Frowning smiley
:-X Lips are sealed
:-/ User is sceptical
;-) Winky smile
:-> Sarcastic smile
:-C User is really annoyed
:-O Uh-Oh

ACRONYMS

To cut down on the size of emails you can use an acronym. Here are some basic ones.

AFK Away from keyboard
BRB Be right back
BTW By the way
FHC Family History Centre
FHL Family History Library
FWIW For what its worth
FYI For your information
GMTA Great minds think alike
IGI International Genealogical Index
IMHO In my humble opinion
LOL Laughing out loud
NGS National Genealogy Society
OTOH On the other hand
ROTF Rolling on the floor (with laughter)
TTYL Talk to you later
TTFN Ta Ta for now

Sometimes we get into the habit of using acronyms so frequently that we forget what the letters really mean. Depending on what words the letters represent, you might possibly offend someone. So be sure you know what the letters stand for before you use an acronym.

Because the Internet is a public forum, please show manners while online.
