Getting Started

One way of getting to meet people who are researching the same interests or can help you with your genealogy, it by joining a Newsgroup. There are about 30,000 newsgroups currently available. But only a small portion of these are devoted to genealogy.

You can subscribe to a Newsgroup and receive emails in either List or Digest version. The List version is where you receive each email from the Newsgroup and the Digest version is where a proportion of the emails are put onto one email and sent out to you maybe twice a day. You can also just visit the Newsgroup's archives and read the messages. Then if you find one to answer, you email the person who sent the email. You can also view the Newsgroup through your Internet service provider. You ISP needs to receive those newsgroups for you to read those messages. Most ISPs do carry them; however, which newsgroups your ISP carries is something to keep in mind when you compare ISPs.

After selecting the Newsgroup that suits your needs, there are some netiquette that you need to remember. Make your first requests simple. Don't ask for the moon - only a ride to it at first.
Don't get embroiled in other people's arguments. Disputes get settled faster without everyone joining in. If a message angers you, don't shoot off a response. Take the time to calm down
Remember the slang term that you use may of offensive to others - especially to those from other countries. Stick with your best English, and avoid using slang terms.
If you do have a disagreement with someone else online, don't make the disagreement public. Contact the person with whom you have the disagreement via private email and resolve your dispute offline.
If someone "flames" you in public, just shrug it off. Chalk it up to a bad day.
