KEEPING ON TOPIC Try to keep your message on topic when you are replying on a Newsgroup, bulletin board or mailing list. Most Newsgroups like you to stay on topic. If someone announces that they have finally found their great grandfather, email them your congratulations privately. It is most infuriating to have 10 emails downloaded that just say "congratulations or well done". This can be done off line in private. Also if someone asks for a look up for a birth, look it up and then email the result privately. If someone asks for information on where to go to find something and you think that others on the Newsgroup will benefit, then send the answer to the Newsgroup. KEEPING THE FLAMES COMING Online arguments take on lives of their own. They erupt with such speed and magnitude they can easily overwhelm an online discussion area. Because of the speed with which these arguments can burst forth, they have been aptly labelled flame wars. Flame Wars start when someone reads something and takes offence. Instead of taking a breath and counting to 10, he.she immediately dashes off a hotheaded response. Soon others are jumping on the bandwagon to agree with the hothead or defend the original poster. Genealogists seem to be impatient types. Usually by the time the flames have cooled, the conflict has caused major damage. |
